I figured he had arthritis because you were having to take breaks on the first video. There’s always a reason why a fierier is not using a hoof stand. Because why make it harder on yourself if it’s not necessary? I’m so impressed with your work, Caleb! Thanks for sharing!❤
So here's the thing... I don't own a horse. I've never been horseback riding. I err on the side of caution whenever I see a horse.... But mannn I love watching your videos. 😅
Unbelievable skill horses have been shod with metal shoes for the past 1300 years so your art or skill dates back that far I hope Tank recovers well and il b looking out for part 3
My younger brother Greg was a Ferrier working mostly with Standard Bred Race Horses in the Toronto race circuit. He would certainly have a great appreciation for your excellent skills.
It's amazing the tips you can learn at a convention...all the latest and greatest things to try....that hammer is truly a "Thor" hammer (maybe you should name it 😂). I know the abcess is actually better than it was...but, it still looks nasty. 😳 Since he wasn't acting "ouchy" when you were packing it, I guess it must be healing up. Can't wait for part 3. Thanks for a great commentary 🙂
It looked a beautiful job. I do hope the horse can feel the difference. He will be happy to have you again. Long memories draft horses. Can be fractious and long memories. Speak from old memories. But you do a beautiful job and he will remember. Its easy to be kind, but more trouble if you tempt fate. Thanks for being thoughful.
You may want to look at the feed. Is it glyphosate? Is it high in omega six? How many chemicals are added ? all those things can contribute to arthritis
I wish my farrier was so considsrate of arthritic senior horses. Would using a mini hoof stand be low enough to get the job done without straining your back?
It’s was great to see you pop up on my home page…love to see a farm vet to wonderful things! Question, would we be surprised at how many farmers have large breed farm animals that need hooves cared for due to, well for financial reasons, maybe people don’t care about the maintenance of their farm animals or maybe they just don’t know this needs done? I’m curious, Thank you 😊 Oh, new subscriber here ✌️
I always wondered if eventually horses feet would slowly evolve into NEEDING the shoes to keep their feet healthy. I know from watching your videos that Tank’s feet don’t fair as well without shoes… I wonder if someday that might be the case for all domestic horses🤔
Yes almost all of the best Farriers measure if you go to the American Farriers Association Convention all of the Farriers are walking around with brass rulers in their back pocket. We use them constantly
11:07 I used to think that the tape that you are using was ''the best''. Try to get a hold of tape that the Gaffers, (GAFFER'S TAPE), in the entertainment industry use, you will be amazed.
We had rolls of that stuff EVERYWHERE during my theatre days. We used it for everything from fixing the lighting to holding our costumes in place 😂 the way it sticks to almost anything is amazingly helpful, and you don’t realize how few things tape will actually stick to until you’ve tried them all and failed 😂😅😅😭🙏🏼
Nice video. Many people assume that it hurts the horse. When working with a hoof knife and/or walking on the hoof with a hot horseshoe. The adhesive tape might also be cheaper? 🤔
I just don’t get it. If a horse is clearly sensitive to tapping in nails because of arthritis in his hocks, why in the hell is this horse still being shod so he can be ridden??? What about the concussion of being ridden on hard ground (or even soft ground) when considering the weight of the horse, the rider and the saddle, equipment, etc??? It doesn’t matter how careful you are when putting shoes on, the fact of the matter is the horse has to continue to endure pain at the hands of humans.
I didn’t hear mention that this horse was still being ridden. If he is, keep in mind the more a horse moves the better for joints, especially arthritic joints. I doubt seriously anyone is riding that horse hard enough to cause more concussion than letting him loose in a pen or pasture.
in the previous video on this horse when the abscess is found, it is explained why the horse needs to have a shoe on. The horse has brittle hooves and requires the protection to stop the hoofs being cut up through natural use. No where is it mentioned that this horse with its joint conditions is being ridden. The owner even wanted to bring the horse into their house to care for it during the healing time of the abscess, that doesn't sound like the kind of human that would be causing this horse unnecessary pain for the enjoyment of riding it.
As the person who belongs to an elderly mare, we all thank you so much for accommodating our horses that have flexibility issues...😊

Thank you for explaining what you do & why you do it as you go.😊😊😊
You took care of this with kid gloves. This horses arthritis you know hurts his hoof. You care a lot about this one. You always do great wor. Aloha!!!
I appreciate how you are a lifelong learner. Outstanding work.
So here's the thing...

I’m happy to see that Tank’s abcessed hoof is really improving. He’ll be good to go in no time!! ❤❤

It's great to see Tanks update and that its looking better cant wait for part 3 great job Caleb.
Glad you brought a good friend with you. Great instructive video. Thanks for sharing...
I’m sure the owner and horse appreciate your tender care
Love seeing the updates, glad Tank is on the mend, love your pup too, great job Caleb, thank you and take care.👍💙🐎
Thank you too!
You are a kind and compassionate man in how you cater to the needs of the animal. ❤❤
My biggest question for all farriers, is why do you not wear protective eyewear when banging on hot steel?
Appreciate you doing an follow up video and explaining about the shoe and tools you are using and what you will do next for this horse. Thank you
Caleb, you are a blessing to your charges, my friend. 🍻
Such a back breaking job!
Thank you for making these babies feel better!

LOL!!
You read my mind…."Doesn’t that hurt??????"
Good to know it doesn’t!!!
I liked the video Caleb. Great video and commentary as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looking forward to part 3!
Duct tape makes the world go round!😎

so you DO measure it. i always thought other farriers just guessed what the hoof was shaped like while shaping shoes. it never made sense to me lol.

That must be hard in your back huh?
Nice video.
Many people assume that it hurts the horse. When working with a hoof knife and/or walking on the hoof with a hot horseshoe.
The adhesive tape might also be cheaper? 🤔
But not as effective as gorilla tape.
We never see your face !
