- Traeger Griddle Unboxing & Review -
I've cooked on griddles for years. I think everyone who loves to cook outside should add one to their cooking arsenal. In this video we unbox, build, season and test cook on the Traeger Flatrock Flat Top Grill.
Full disclosure: Meat Church has been partnered with Traeger for 5 years. With that said they did not ask me to make this video. This is honest feedback. If you know me, I always say that what you cook on is our your choice. No judgement here. Just get outside and cook with Meat Church!

That cover and grease trap are the two key features I like about it.
Same. That grease clean out has been great.
Same here; waiting for the zgrill version though lol
the fact that IT DOESN"T WORK WITHOUT WARPING EVERY USE is something i don't like about mine. it's my traeger WARP ROCK
I like the removable griddle on the Traeger, how it's recessed (to make it more impervious to windy conditions) and the hinge on the lid. What I didn't like especially was the price. So, I went with the Blackstone at Costco, about 760 sq inches for $350. No matter what rolled-cast iron griddle you get, if you season it right, you'll be blown away at how non-stick it is and safe to use with metal tools. Just know there is some care involved in cleaning up after that you don't have to deal with on a grill or smoker. After every cook, I scrape the surface, run a paper towel to get the loose bits, thin coat of oil that wipe excess of with another paper towel, and then cook it on there to add to the seasoning. Griddles are great. Game changers.
If you ever take the buns off with a spatula again.... I'm unsubbing bro! ;)
Not your channel…”bro” He can do his own thing, without being told what not to do by some troll.
@@johnlebzelter4208 Thanks boner.
@@johnlebzelter4208 he’s clearly making a joke. Dude what is your obsession with policing comments that have nothing to do with you?
For those who don't have a griddle, I don't either but I have a bottle of Holy Cow seasoning from Meat Church - which he used on these burgers. If you make Smash Burgers using that, griddle or not, people will fall in love with you. Hell, I'm pretty sure you could cook burgers in an Easy Bake Oven and people would rave over them if as long as you seasoned them with Holy Cow.
Looks like I need to save up and get this griddle, making Smash Burgers inside on a stove is a disaster to clean up lol.
Really love that Traeger got into the griddle game, however I think the price point is off. Even the best 3 burner Blackstone comes in at 60% cheaper than this $900 price tag. I believe they overpriced for this build. I’m a buyer in the mid to high $500 range.
Totally agree. I`m not paying for something TWICE over priced like this griddle is.
Agreed, but so many people are willing to pay a premium for the Traeger brand name these days that I’m sure they priced that in.
@@barnee27 oh 100% agree. No doubt they’ll sell, my argument was more about them missing a huge takeover opportunity from Blackstone.
I would absolutely pay 900.00 Traeger makes the best products!!! And this flatrock griddle will be the perfect side kick and finishing touch to my outdoor kitchen!! It's a must have for me!! I am hoping to have one soon!!! 8 own the big Traeger smoker already and enjoy it almost daily!! I cant wait to have this flatrock!!!
I'm going on year two for my Flatrock and this thing has been a game changer for cooking. People balk at the cost but guess what, it only cost 100% more to go first class and this is a first class griddle that is built like a tank. Only issue I have had is the flame sensor LED on the far RH knob goes out after 5 seconds of being on (flame is present). I will contact Traeger today about that and use my 5 year warranty. If you are on the fence about this griddle don't be, it's really a quality product.
mine's warped 3 out of 5 cooks. wastes food and my time.
I've been looking at other brands but I like the features of the traeger I'm glad they decided to jump into this space
It's really well built.
Love the lid. Not so sure about the grease trap. It takes up some prime real estate. I like the way Blackstone does it in the back.
Little tip for the smash burgers, smash the onions into the pattie when you smash the pattie, that way your not sacrificing the crust on one side and impeding the malliard reaction when you flip it
I talk about that in my full how to video. I was taught this way by a famous chef and it has so much crust it’s fine. Just a presence thing. Wither way works.
its actually called the TRAEGER WARP ROCK because it warps every cook due to design flaw.
This looks great, but I just can’t justify spending $600 more on this than a Blackstone that hasn’t failed me yet. Awesome video as always.
My thoughts exactly. A grand for a griddle? As if!
I've got a Blue rhino, my brother has a Blackstone and we have a Chargriller 3 burner at our fishing shed. Honestly I like the chargriller 3 burner the best. Its no none sense, setup smartly, not too big not too small(we eat alot), and was less then half the cost of the blackstone. Only had it 6 months though. Hopefully it holds up.
I was planning on purchasing a Loco Griddle this year. I've seen Matt use one in his videos and they look great. Will definitely do some more research on this Traeger griddle. Matt, I love your videos, very informative and entertaining. You are the BBQ GOD!!
yeh the Loco requires a 110 plug in to operate.
Get the Loco.
@@gosman949 so does the traeger to have all the functions. It does have a 9v backup but you get no use of all the “functions”
@@bigscreenbird8198 I want no part of a griddle that requires being plugged in. Fire is fire and we don't need no electricity. Pellet smoker OK, griddle not OK!
@@gosman949I agree. I’m happy with my 32” Blackstone which I got for $279. Plus it has a 4th burner.
I feel like everyone gets everything ready to make food and trys to turn there griddle on and are empty on propain so that propain level is awesome to see
Traeger makes nice stuff, love my ironwood, but the real question is how does this compare/do you prefer the Traeger to the Loco griddle in previous videos.
So glad you’re reviewing this!! I want this so badly!! 😀
It`s $899 dollars, thats NUTS! You can buy a Blackstone 36" for a 1/3rd of the money.
Amazing as always! Would love to see more videos of you using other elements in your outdoor kitchen, vs just a cooker in the area but I love it all!
Tough camera setup.
@@MeatChurchBBQ how does this compare to the Loco? Do you still use both?
Loved the video. Thank you
8 have never understood the lure of smash burgers. I just form them in my hand and cook. I'm not knocking anyone who cooks that way. It is the same taste either way.
I heard that crunch
It’s not a true 5 year warranty. The only thing covered under the limited 5 year warranty is the base and legs. Everything else is 1 year. You really need to specify that. The $900 price is bonkers and you never said if you would actually pay that much out of your own pocket. So would you pay $900 for one?
Left that $900 part out, huh.
@@jasonburns6411 every “review” video I’ve seen it’s left out.
And every review I’ve seen is sponsored by Traeger
@@offrodnolefmr7445 marketing!!
It’s more expensive than the less expensive blackstones but those are plagued with rust issues, burner blowout. There are things that are much more efficient here and I trust traders build quality and customer support, though I don’t have much experience in those areas with other brands. The price will make me think twice… but I’d probably put this higher up on the list than other brands, for now. We’ll see in coming months how these things hold up.
i'm litterally in the market for a replacement griddle for the outdoor kitchen. This looks really cool ! thanks for the unboxing and video !
And how does it compare, overall, to the Loco Griddle?
I would love to see more of your out door kitchen.
To be honest, I've been looking to get one of these, but I haven't found one that I like. I'm impressed with Traegers and sort of glad they came out with one.I'm honestly considering this one. I've got a smoker from them, so I guess this would keep things consistent, lol.
Dude, I love my flatrock. Pull the trigger and get one. The lid is solid and the cooking area being recessed a bit let's me use mine even on super windy days. The keg grease bin is brilliant too.
Check out the Primate.
Meh, I'm loving my Blackstone griddle I've had it for 6yrs and cook on it damn near every weekend, it's way cheaper then this traeger and well built 🤷♂️
@@jdubb0113 I also have a Blackstone and it’s been perfectly fine for what I need as far as a griddle. But if I was going to spend as much as this Traeger is, I’d get something that seems better built. I think you pay a tax for their name to be on it at this point. Not that they’re bad, just think they’re out of line on value for the money these days.
@@barnee27 Agreed...
Very Nice. I think at that price point, I'd still go with the Loco Cookers.
Hash Browns FTW!
But where do you stand on your loco now? 😂
I don’t think Loco design them to be stood upon.
Doesn’t really have any bearing on this. I have 3 houses so that helps with my 30 plus cookers. 😂
Still have all my Loco cookers and still use them. I’m not the kind of person to suddenly stop using anything I already like.
Hey don’t worry it’s his 3 houses pre covid prices in Texas @davieslocker86, that’s a one bedroom with out a shower and a mother in law co-signing out here in Cali, but I digress, I was thinking the same thing. Got me buying the Loco’s but now I have to think about these Traegers. Must be his meat tallow hair that gets me to buy what he’s sellin❤️
Looks nice but I'm already married - to my Blackstone. 😁
I have a Blackstone which is great but honestly when I throw a cast iron griddle on my good ole' Weber Kettle it gets WAY hotter than the Blackstone. You can really SEAR when the cast iron is over white hot coals.
I've never made a bad smashburger on the griddle. Best burger ever. 🍔
100%
that is bad ass.........I'm getting rid of my gas grill for one of these
First off i’m huge fan…. i love all your recipes…. I apologize if this question has been asked already…. If you could only afford to buy one griddle what’s your 1st choice flat rock, loco, other?
The Weber seems in line quality wise and costs a lot less than this traeger.
Hello Matt. Love your channel. I understand you need to go where the money leads you. However, there are so many great manufacturers of outdoor cooking equipment. Tragger may have started this, but they are no longer king of the mountain. I would love to see you preview other manufacturers.
It's a nice Griddle at a decent price. I know you don't do comparisons usually. It would be nice to see how this Trager compares to your Loco Griddle though.
Love your videos Matt , but I just can’t get past $900.00 for a flat top. I know you have to have a plug nearby for the accessories ( propane levels and igniter indication) to work, even with the battery ignition, maybe if you had enameled covered cast iron it could be worth it. I have one cast iron griddle and spend too much time cleaning while everyone else is enjoying the food I just prepared. I have Traeger pellet smoker and love it. But brother, I can’t see this juice being worth the squeeze.
This was my initial worry as well when I got my Blackstone (which I absolutely love by the way). However, I watched Todd Toven's most recent video about cleaning your griddle and it totally made sense and has enabled me to be able to eat with my family much sooner than previously, when I thought I knew the best way to clean it.
Also, I love Matt, Meat Church and his videos but I can't see spending $1000 on a griddle when there are so many more affordable options out there. Even the Sam's Club Member's Mark griddles are great; our Little League admins use it for our concession stand. In this economy there's just no reason to spend that kind of cash on something like this unless you just have money burning a hole in your pocket.
Looks good but if it’s anything as annoying as owning a traeger grill, I’ll pass.
Only thing you seemed to miss was making them as a double cheese burger! Grill looks great!! Wish i had one
Awesome I didn’t even know they had a griddle, and we are in the market for one………. Boom sold 😂😂😂😂😂
Clarify if I am wrong but I am guessing the Griddle was free from Traeger? I say this because of course you mention nothing negative which leads me to believe its not a thorough review. You have review in the title which means its not just a recipe cooking video.
No mention that it needs to be plugged in for the flame or fuel sensors to work. Luckily you can use a 9 volt battery to power the igniters but you have no clue until it gets hot if it's lit without the flame sensors. Positive thought is with it being inset like this it keeps from blowout in the wind.
Side handles on the griddle top leads me to believe when you try to scoop things you are going to lose them out of the handles. No offense but were the handle holes a necessity even thought it can be a positive for easy removal.
Can only be used with propane and has no natural gas conversion available.
The rail system, grease collection and sturdy oversized side shelves are a nice amenities to have with a flattop. The little extras in my opinion don't warrant the price tag.
I am an owner of an Ironwood 650 generation 1 so I think I can say this that Traeger pricing is getting ridiculous. I had no problem paying for my Ironwood 650 because of its size and features the price was warranted compared to competitors.
This is a 33" by 18" inch griddle with a 594 square inch cook space at $900 without tax. I never feel I have to be "loyal" to a brand when its my hard earned money being spent and I want the best bang for the buck. I can't justify going and buying this flattop when I can go spend half the price and get something better on the features I want. I understand the features everyone wants it a bit different so that is my opinion.
Don't want to be all negative and end up on one of your troll videos (which BTW are hilarious). I love the videos and watch them the day they come out weekly. Use Meat Church seasonings every day and want to praise you for the work you do. Hopefully one day I will make it down to Texas from South Dakota to check out the store and the BBQ spots you showed on your videos.
Great comments!! This is exactly what I’m screamin
Where all these griddles fail is to keep good warm after the fact.. the taco carts you can find at swamp meets have at least 3 trays on the side with a burner under to keep meat or wags, potatoes ,pancakes whatever warm for a while while everyone gets some..
try the onions down first, then meat on top - when you flip, now they're under the cheese
Would you want a high quality griddle with robust features and wind resistance or would you rather buy a cheap griddle with no wind resistance blackstone doesn’t retain heat that well plus you have to order the wind screen
I was the same way forever. I was so intimidated. You got this!
Well, THAT made me hungry! Thanks god today is a “work from home” day…. 😂❤
That looks like a really nice griddle. The only problem I see is that you only put 1 pattie on each bun!!! lol
I have a Royal Gourmet 36 inch griddle and love it but I like the features of The Traeger griddle
Man you got to use the stronger scraper on the original flip. After plating you scrapped up and tossed over half the crusts on those burgers. I am sure they were great with zero added effort they would have been even better.
I love mine!
AWESOME!
Just FYI the new weber griddles also have 5 year warranties
I have wanted a griddle for a long while now but didn't pull the trigger because i was going back and forth between the pott boss ceramic and the blackstone
Then i recently saw this one and like how it seems to season more uniformly than the blackstone. Meaning less cooler spots that are hard to season properly. I like most things about this flatrock except where the grease hole is. I wish it was more off to the left. Just seems like food is going to get lost in the grease catcher more often where the hole is now.
Cooking on mine for first time. Only thing I don’t like is you can’t close the lid while cooking. I know now that I will keep my normal BBQ grill for cooking “tall” cuts ect
Camp chef. The model 600 griddle is marked down right now to 429 and it comes with grill grates so you can remove the flat top and use it as a gass grill if you want. To many other options out there at a way better price. Traeger is over priced with everything. The only people who buy Traeger grills are people just getting into grilling and don't know there are better products out there. They just see all these you tubers pushing Traeger products cause they get them for free and probably even get paid by traeger to push their products.
Not bad but $899? Hard pass..
Yep hard pass here, Blackstone all day for me. ✌️
@@floridaangler4066 Yeppp! Same here, i love my 36" Blackstone all the way.
Cool, Facebook Marketplace for half the price....People choosing a Blackstone are clueless.
I like the bun butter roller.
My man, gotta have a cold beer whilst cooking, be it smoker, open pit or griddle! I like
You got that right!
Wish we could get one for dallas fire station 2… could help cook up some good breakfast lunch and dinner for 3 shifts….
Have you ever done a outdoor kitchen tour?
Cool. Just like a Blackstone
I like that these sleves are actually useable whereas on a BS they are not. You will melt a bottle of seasoning or oil next to the cook surface on a BS. This also keeps temp way better with the recessed cook surface. Cheers!
Folks, this is just a sponsorship pitch, not a suggestion you buy one. Do your research if you want a griddle or an upgrade. The market is growing. Blackstone, Pit Boss, Loco, Camp Chef, and soon, Weber are just a few of the options. Do not take this video announcement/demonstration/reveal as gospel. Do your research!
Well said.
Nice griddle. My wife only allows me to do smashburgers now for burger night.
Donate it to dallas fire station 2 I’ll come to u and load it up. U already have a built in lol
Great video! Thank you
I love the lid and the look, but I prefer my griddle to not have a 360 lip, I want a flat front so I can use a long spatula from the front. That would probably prevent me from getting one, but that's a personal preference not a condemnation of the Traeger.
Do a 40 inch pancake with 5 pounds of bacon cook
Smash burgers for lunch. Thanks for making me hungry :)
Good review. I'm hungry again though.
Seasoning container should be detachable take the whole thing in the house
So, Loco or Traeger?
I had the same question. Bought the Traeger yesterday and am taking it back today. Already an issue with one of the burner knobs sticking and not turning properly and they want me to work on it and replace parts myself, NOT FOR $1000 AFTER TAX! This should be a $499 price point.
I would of put those scrapings on the burgers!
Awesome video buddy
No comparison to the Loco Griddle which Matt also endorses in his videos.
I just subscribed to your channel today after watrching this video. I hope that you will do more griddle cooks, I have a Blackstone 28" Range Top Combo griddle so I'm always looking for cooking channels that involve griddle cooking. I've had my griddle going on about three years now and I preferr to cook on it more than my electric stove which I hate because it is so difficult to control heat. I had watch a couple of your other videos which I liked alot, so when I saw this one involving the Traeger Flatrock I had to check it out.
Awesome. We have several more griddle recipes that will be added to our RUclips Griddle playlist.
Looks really good. Just wish they had a natural gas version.
My family does a Benihana night on one but we go buy the butter and sauces from the restaurant
Love that!!
I pretty much have one requirement: natural gas conversion. I was disappointed Traeger isn’t offering a conversion kit. I guess Blackstone is my only choice?
CampChef can do it too. It is one of the features I am looking for in the one I eventually purchase.
…right
Pretty sweet you had Kyle Gass from Tenacious D help you put that griddle together!!! 😏😉
Honestly, how does it compare to the Loco?
Propane, Hank Hill approves!
What powers the lights ? Batteries or AC plug in ? Thanks
Another menu item at the " Meatchurch BBQ Bar and Grill " Wax TX ;)
I got a Blackstone that’s loaded and love it. I’m his looks nice but I feel you can get more from other brands for less $
You have to be a millennial. You relaxed “think” with “feel.”
What is the cost of the Traeger Flatrock grill? I'm in Missouri.
How does this stack up against the Loco griddle?
Where is it made?
I've seen a lot of people complaining on the price. I get you can cook just fine on less expensive, but quality might be the differance. I can smoke good BBQ on my $200 coal grill but a $1200 old country is easier.
Matt is on here making bomb a** videos with some bomb a** seasoning. And you guys are? Sit. Here? Trolling about black stone anybody that knows smokers has a trigger and why not have a trigger edithen for some smash burgers or breakfast you guys? Are ridiculous Matt? Keep up the good work and enjoy your videos.
Cheers Daniel!
Is the griddle stainless or just cheap metal?
Outstanding 🎉
Just and FYI if anyone is interested in this griddle...its excellent!! just make a hard pass on the grill cover!! completely useless. The rain comes right in and keeps it in. Really bad move on Traeger's part. They should have known this before charging customers $100 for a grill cover that is 100% defective. BBQ guys refunded today, props to them
What’s that price tag look like though lol good looking product either way
$899
Hell No!
I really like the new Ironwood XL and this would be an awesome friend for it to hang out with!!!!
I work for Costco and we just started selling the Kirkland brand of smoker pellets.......would be cool to see a review on them to find out how they hold up to Traeger, Cow boy, etc etc.
I too have started using the Kirkland pellets on my Ironwood. I’ve only used Traeger pellets before so I’d also love to see how they compare to other brands, especially at half the price.
I need one more meet patty!😁
Looks cool, but overpriced for me.
I was interested until I saw the price. Just knocked me out of buying one. I’ll do without!!
Does the griddle heat evenly ?
You’re legit. Love the video and the fact y’all use ThermoWorks products! That’s how I know y’all are top shelf.
Y’all do phenomenal work! God bless.
do a kitchentour pls
Soon
$899? Hard pass! You can get an actual 3/4" thick stainless plate griddle with double the BTUs for cheaper.
Weber has one out now too. I'd like to have an Evo myself.
That weber griddle is a joke. Over priced piece of garbage,
I was finally able to see a video on it. Does not look promising
