    Very nice sword, it is so wide at the hilt. Really cool.

      It is incredibly wide in the hilt area! For a sword so wide it handles amazing well!! I believe the width at the base really assists in creating a nice point of balance. Thanks for watching

    That sword is unreal. It's incredible. It makes people look small, like it was made for a giant.

      Lol. It is quite an awesome sword! The real joy comes from handling it. It is quite nimble and quick. I wouldn’t say it’s light, it just is very well balanced and handles like a charm. Deceivingly quick for its size and profile!

    "Blue sky. Large caliber weapons. I love getting out of the office!" -- Sicario: Day of the Soldado
    This sword is quite a fantastic sword, with that imposing and intimating blade, it's like a medieval flamethrower--total overkill.
    The DSA model has gone through quite an overhaul. Initially the batch they sent to Matthew Jensen is light weight at 3.5lbs with a strong distal taper and a linear profile taper--extremely nimble and light for the type XVIIIc. Not sure why they revamped the design. Maybe some don't like the overly linear profile taper. Now it's closer to the original's profile, but featuring less distal taper, and heavier. They seem to have updated the web page to reflect the new weight, but yours at 3lbs 13oz is almost identical to the original, though the original has a shorter grip thus a shorter tang.
    Seems to be still a good design, with the slight hollow ground and prominent central ridge. That cross guard fit isn't bad at all--clearly custom fit to the blade, though still left a bit of a gap.
    Great sword, excellent review!

      Wouldn't all these modifications and changes in this design seem to indicate that DSA is in fact listening to the community and are trying to improve on, regardless of past shortfalls, what seems to be popular model?

    I have been wanting one of those for like 3 years just haven't been able to justify the money I've got a lot of cheaper swords $300 and down but boy I really like that 🗡️

      It really is a nice sword!! But I do understand that $700 USD is quite a bit of cash. I'm not wealthy, so 700 is a lot to spend for me also. I think its worth the money if you want a type XVIIIc sword. I usually sell off swords after I review them, however, this is a keeper! thanks for watching!!

    Although they are so different , from your videos for my first sword I'm torn between this and the RK euro 10. Totally different, but I can tell you had a lot if fun with both.

      Well my friend…they are both very nice. If I had to choose it would be the Alexandria. My example handled incredibly well, which is something I didn’t really expect from this type of blade. However I think that is how a type XVIIIc is supposed to feel! It cuts effortlessly also! The ronin is a great unique budget sword that I also really enjoyed. I guess it depends what your budget is 750$ vs 275$. The Darksword Alexandria is higher quality, comes with a great scabbard as well. It’s a hell of a lot of sword lol! But both are great!

    Nice review. I am considering buying one, but still kind of on the fence about it.
    I had commissioned a similar sword based on the Alexandria about 2 years ago, but unfortunately the smith apparently died around April 2020.

      That’s quite unfortunate. I don’t think you can go wrong with this for the money, all though it is not necessarily cheap

      There are of course high end type xviiic options like the two versions from Albion and some others from blade smiths doing custom work, however I think Darksword really did a great job on this design. Highly recommend it!

      @@mattamathics1108 I am in Europe and unfortunately it costs around 839 Euro here with just a scabbard (no belt), which is around 955 US dollars.
      For that price I might go with a more expensive one.
      Though I only found a single seller(swords-and-more) and there might be different ones for DSA. I need to look that up.
      Anyway, thanks for the reply.

    I can’t decide between the DSA medieval knight bastard sword or this DSA Alexandria. I like what everyone says about the handling of the medieval knight bastard sword, but is the Alexandria nimble enough that you would prefer it for the cutting power? Between these two swords which one do you prefer for general backyard shenanigans like cutting pool noodles, water bottles, and tatami? Thank you for the reviews they have been entertaining and informative keep up the good work.

  • @Ranstone

    With he new Albion price hikes, the Alexandria is now nearly exactly 1,000$ more than this.

    This was a really good review. As big of a fan as I am of DSA ... the Alexandria sword has really never held any aesthetic appeal for me ... mainly because of the damn big ol' cutting blades. That being said ... after this review and several others I might just have to give it swing one day.
    There have been a lot done on this model. What is amazing to me is the apparent progress DSA has made with this model and its scabbard. I think this review is a good testament to the fact that DSA does listen to the community ... especially when there are OBJECTIVE reviews like yours here as well as so many others. I think you're demonstrating very accurately what DSA has on display at a price point they are basically alone in.
    To be fair, as you will agree with, there are brands that are making swords less expensive that do show superior details that DSA is lacking in. The one, first and foremost, is the degree with which they sharpen their swords. Ronin Katana's Euro line, of which you have sampled, usually come very nicely sharpened. Now those swords are 1/2 the cost of DSA models ... and a whole lot less expensive then brands like Albion and Arms & Armor ... and yet they are quite a bit better sharpened. Why can't these other brands seems to get that right.
    However ... I was surprised at how well this sword handled ... impressive cutting!! Your enthusiasm is so genuine ... and that really comes through. Good review on what has turned out to be a very good model from DSA. Good job!

      Thank you so much!!!! This is a really nice sword for the money asked. The only two things I could ask for are a smaller gap in the cross guard and a sharper blade. My example is awesome in handling and feel!! Darksword is so close in becoming an amazing sword maker for the money. They have become more expensive, but they have improved in many areas.
      I’m a small guy. This sword felt awesome!!! If you asked me to choose a sword in my collection for actual combat……..I would probably choose this sword…. And. I have a lot of swords lol

      @@mattamathics1108 I hope you will enjoy the 15th Century Hand and a Half ... IMHO ... DSA's best designed sword. Powerful ... nicely built ... quick ... mine was VERY sharp right outa the box. The Squire, Knight, and Gothic ... weren't really my things solely from a looks and style point of view. But ... gotta say ... AGAIN ... makin me change my mind about the Alexandria. Again ... good work. Nice new intro btw!!

      @@mr.excalibur1455 I’m very excited to start using the DSA 15th century Hand and a Half! I haven’t really tested it out yet. It looks as though this sword has gone through quite an improvement over the years. I watched some older reviews and my sword now has a new and improved grip compared to the older model and I believe there has been some modifications in the blade design. It feels like quite a nice piece. Very rigid and long blade, kind of heavy. Feels nicely balanced, but definitely more of a two handed sword.

    Great review. Albions are almost never sharp enough out of the box. I've owned several Albions and had to sharpen all of them to get them to cut well. The only swords I've cut with that perform well when brand new are Angus Trim swords.

    • @mattamathics1108
      @mattamathics1108  3 года назад +1

      Thank you my friend!!! I just wish sword makers would take the time to get the edge real sharp! A lot of swords are great pieces, except for the edge sharpness! And sharpening is difficult and takes practice, no matter what method you use. Thanks for watching!!

    Holy moly , that's huge. I guess "full tang" is out of the question for that one. Nice , but not my style. I love sabers. Plus , medieval swords like that are meant to be used against armor. I doubt i'll ever encounter any armored sword wielding knights. I'm more into stylish fast moving sabers like shashka's. I do like 2 handed asian jian's and dao's though. Cheers.

    I understand that you are not a historical/martial expert. However, just wondering.... At 5'7" and with an inseam of about 33" (so I am somewhat long legged), I am the mean average height of a medieval knight. How did they carry this 45" sword on their belt? Have you drawn this sword from its belted scabbard? I personally believe that a sword like this is not meant to be worn, rather it is meant to be carried on the saddle. Just wondering if my thinking makes sense.

    • @mattamathics1108
      @mattamathics1108  3 года назад

      I have not drawn the sword from scabbard on a belt. This sword very much seems like a battlefield weapon. I can’t imagine it being quickly drawn for attack or defense. I can imagine it being brought to the field of battle, drawn, and held on horseback or on foot until battle commenced.

    • @mattamathics1108
      @mattamathics1108  3 года назад

      I will say though….I’m 5’5 and I have absolutely no trouble wielding this sword! It’s quite nice, even for someone of my smaller height
