Really interesting video.reminds me of all the pubs in the lakenham area of norwich that have now gone.Anyone remember the Tuckswood, which is now a petrol station and McDonald's
Remember the Jolly butchers and Black Anner well, my brother in law used to sing there regularly, was in the pub for Anner;s last new years Eve, she fell early in the new year and never came out of Hospital, often think of those years whenever we walk along Ber street
People say "Oh it's such a shame we have lost so many pubs in Norwich!" Well the reality is...time sand attitudes change. Go back 30+ years, pubs were a major place for entertainment. However that has changed massively. There are now far more rivals for people's entertainment budget and it's not seen as socially acceptable to spend every night in the pub. Not to mention beer is no longer 3d a pint! It would just be impossible to support the number of pubs Norwich had in the early 90's let alone the 60s/70s. I reckon pubs in Norwich will halve again in the next 10 years. Sad but there you go. The saving grace is that we had so many to start with.
A lot of pubs were close to factories and could rely on the factory workers for regular trade. Like many towns and cities most of these factories are now closed and converted to other uses. People are more likely to stay at home for entertainment due to satellite tv etc.
Thank you, John for this insightful video. I am researching some family history and looking for the location for the Jolly Drovers public house on Ber Street. It seems to overlap the address of the Bulls Head public house. Do you know where it was located before it was closed about 1937?
Thank you Becky. That's quite peculiar isn't it - you've probably used the same websites as me norfolkpubs.co.uk and norwich-heritage.co.uk/pubs which usually resolve all my queries. This video has some further info about the Bulls Head, but sadly not the Jolly Drovers. There are some "Norwich pub groups" on Facebook, like Norwich Pubs and their History or Norwich Pubs That are Gone. I've had a quick look on both, but can find nothing with a search. You could try asking your question there. If you get an answer, perhaps you could post it here! Good luck!
Has anybody got pictures of Derby Street Norwich. I used to live at No 38 adjacent to St Bananas Church. Our house used to be a pub, with a Skittle alley and large function room in our back garden?
I remember walking past the George & Dragon when it was being demolished (only the original front remains - the rest was rebuilt from scratch) and seeing the remains of a mummified cat that had tumbled out from a wall cavity. Apparently, they were put there to ward off evil spirits!
Oh gruesome! BTW, I couldn't reply to your comment yesterday, and I think that was because you included a link. i could read it in an email notification but couldn't comment on this youtube site. So I'll just say here, thanks for sending me the link, much appreciated!
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich You're welcome - glad it was of use! I hadn't realised that adding links to a comment messed up the ability to reply. In that case I'd better not link to my novel, Time Portals of Norwich, and deals with the adventures of a girl who time travels to some interesting events of Norwich's past! :D
Such a shame to see pubs shutting and left to ruin or demolished for housing. Even repurposing as housing is a better alternative keeping the buildings alive.
Thank you. I'm glad you found them interesting, and I can't disagree with the rest of your comment! I intend to put that right soon. I hope you'll enjoy future videos, and thanks for watching.
I'm impressed how you talk and play the piano at the same time.
I play all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order 🤣
Fantastic memories, in the 60's / 70's playing in the bands in Norwich so played in most of the pups mentioned
I'm glad it brought back memories

I think you're right, but it's a loss of tradition. Nothing stays the same!

Church for every week of the year and a pub for every day.
Indeed! Not quite the case now.

Always good.
The watercolour at 2:58 might be by John Sell Cotman but he’d have found it somewhat difficult to have painted it in 1870 as he died in 1842!
That might have been a bit of a challenge! However it was by John Joseph Cotman, and it was 1870.
Very nice.
Thank you. The pubs subject seems popular, so I'll look at some more pubs soon.
The Plasterers Arms in Cowgate and the Murderers up on Timberhill were my locals in the 80’s and sometimes the Lamb Inn
I think I'm going to have to make another Pubs video.
Jimi Hendrix was in Norwich?! Wow. good material!
Thank you - you might also like to see Lost Norwich - Music Venues....
The Clarence Harbour used to be the away supporters’ pub for Norwich City games.
Yes I think away supporters are now at the waterfront. Or they will be after the pandemic....
And the Kingsway? But the Clarence became more of a home pub in the 90s when the Compleat Angler took over as the away pub.
Wasnt the previous owner of the ferry boat convicted of murdering a prostitute in suffolk? i used to see a lot of good bands there :)
Yes you're right. 5 prostitues actually, around Ipswich.
Bald Head Pub ... or Boar's Head Pub ... ?
BTW - many times I was in the Jolly Butchers singing along with Black Anna. We would all raise the roof ...
I bet New Years Eve would have been interesting in there!

There are a couple of pictures here which may be of interest. What was the name of the pub?

It was once said that "Norwich has a pub for every day of the year & a church for every Sunday." Times have changed.
They certainly have - there were so many!
Remember the stuffed cat at the foot of the stairs in the Ferry Boat?
No I don't! 😊
Such a shame to see pubs shutting and left to ruin or demolished for housing. Even repurposing as housing is a better alternative keeping the buildings alive.
I agree, it retains the sense of history.
I learned a lot I didn't know! Nice video 🙂
Thank you Brit Girls, I think I did too!
When I lived in Norwich I was told it had more pubs than churches. I don't know if it was true ?
There is a saying that Norwich has a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day of the year. That's probably a bit out of date now.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich That was it. More pubs than churches. I remember it now..
The Landlord of the Ferryboat in the 1990's was Ipswich Serial Killer Stephen Wright.
Thank you, I wasn't aware of that.
I went to that dentist until I realised how bad they were!
I've just got my first appointment since the pandemic.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich How was it? I haven't been back there yet...
@@ManWalksDogs it was ok. But I've now lost a filling and will need to go again.

How's the leg?
"This is mydentist, quite literally.......it is my dentist" 😂
