    motif :
"A dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful” is a quote by Martha Graham, a legendary choreographer.

BTS tends to portray ideas and thoughts very well in their songs or videos. The complexity of most of his compositions beautifully expresses his creative and artistic choices. To do this, they use various devices and symbols, linking literary, psychological and social references. Repeating words is a deliberate literary device that puts emphasis on something and is called Epizeuxis. In this case, "bump, bump, bump" is the sound of the heartbeat and conveys the heightened sensation of anxiety; and, "jump, jump, jump" deepens the feeling of depression and dark thoughts, adding layers of complexity to the lyrics. In the case of "nah, nah, nah" and "yeah, yeah, yeah" the repetition makes the song accessible to BTS's multinational and multilingual audience where fans from diverse backgrounds can easily sing along, creating a sense of unity and connection. . This MV was filmed at the Los Angeles Theater.
“Black Swan” is inspired by the psychological theories of Carl Jung and explores the concept of “Shadow” which addresses the darkest things that exist in all of us and that we hide or repress, for example, our fears and doubts or our prejudices. It is based on the following quote from dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, “a dancer dies twice - once when she stops dancing, and this first death is the most painful”. That's why it's relatable to Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, "Swan Lake", where there is a White Swan (good) and a Black Swan (evil). It is demonstrated throughout the video by the choreography and the colors of her black, white and gray clothes.
This song has an essentially deep and personal meaning for BTS, as it refers to the fear of losing their passion for music. The video portrays the struggle within oneself between light and darkness, with beautiful visuals, powerful choreography and emotional vocals, adding depth to the narrative and representing the artists' internal conflicts and emotions. But the lyrics end with the hope that they will fight this feeling by looking deeper into themselves, understanding their feelings, knowing themselves better, and using those feelings as inspiration to make more music.
    💜🇧🇷💜🇧🇷💜🇧🇷💜🇧🇷💜🇧🇷💜🇧🇷💜

black swan is about their fears about losing their passion as years go by...like in the lyrics it says "Oh that would be my first death, I've been always afraid of"; it delves into the time where they're starting to feel dead inside because after going through so many things they're not sure where to continue anymore. They fear whether they'd be able to keep resonating with music 😭what makes this even sad to me is that they released this when pandemic started, where they had to cancel their World Tour and stuff. Thus, it hit even harder watching them perform it back then

“The first death” they are afraid of is loosing their craft enjoyment… in the movie, The Black Swan dies twice: once when she stops dancing, and the second time when she actually dies.

BTS are 7 individual, talent, different type of artists (if you someday watch out their solos?), over 10yrs active (2 of them even made music before BTS). They have 400+ (500?) songs includes solos, different units, mixtapes, singles, soloalbums, collabs, japanese/english songs... they have lots of behind stories by themself telling their "artsy stuff"😅 and docus in Disney+, Prime video... BTS has allways hevily involved their music and careers (that was/still is quite rare in kpop industry) 💜. Sorry my english and greetings from the edge of Europe

You were definitely on the right track. The Map of the Soul series was them taking an introspective look at themselves and exploring Jungian concepts of their persona, shadow, and ego to achieve self actualisation. In this song they are exploring their fear of losing their love and passion for making music. Their fears are from their shadow selves and they are facing them so they can accept them as part of themselves. In the video you noticed they wear white when they are on stage and seen from the audience's point of view to represent their Persona, the version of themselves a person shows the public, and in black when it is behind the scenes or viewed from the back of the stage to represent their shadow selves. You stopped the video just before the end scene where Jungkook watches his shadow and it shrinks and disappears. Now he has acknowledged his fear and embraced it as part of him it is gone.

Rap leaning songs (or solely rap) to try are: Cypher series 1-4, particularly Tear live at Wembley, Outro series, Ugh live, Baepsae (Silver Spoon) dance practice is good, Born Singer live stage mix from 2 different years. These are just the tip of the iceberg, but I think are good places to start.
To get some idea also of more variety (they have a back catalogue of about 500 songs), try Festa 2021, which has a part of 5 different songs, also Proof Live 2022.
The 3 rappers all have solo projects, but it is maybe worth you seeing them as part of the BTS group first and then getting to some solo work, so you can see how different they are to each other.

BTS have complete freedom when it come's to their music they are group of 7, that's 7 song writers, 7 composer 7 producers, musicians,2 of the Rappers also write for other artists and one of those 2 Rappers even produces for other artist and has won awards as an Producer for other artists. They got told by their boss Mr Bang to continue developing their skills and tell their own stories, in their music. They are not the norm within the Kpop Industry but now their company is the biggest but was tiny and going bankrupt when they joined the company. Their newer artists are expected to learn new skills and start to take part in making decisions writing lyric etc etc.
As for the songs you mentioned 2 were just than fun songs to lift people spirits in covid a dreadful time for them. btw and Boy with Love is part of a story line and an answer to their older track Boy In Love, were being younger they explored love within a school setting, trying to understand girls and their own emotions.

The song is basically about them having been in the business for ten years and just not feelin' it anymore. They've lost the fire in the belly. The song ends with them looking within themselves and rekindling the spark again. Something like that

Jimin was a contemporary dancer before he joined BTS, so they incorporated it here.

This song IS PURE ART, and the meaning of it is the fear of losing your passion for your art. It was inspired by the movie Black Swan, The Map of the Soul by Carl Jung, and the quote by Martha Graham "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful". Also, there are some themes from Demian by Herman Hesse. The Topic of shadows is covered in this song as well. If you notice, SUGA in the beginning has a shadow that is moving independently of him, as does RM. The Shadow, as described by Carl Jung, is the undesirable parts of our psyche, that we suppress. And it's important to acknowledge and accept those parts of ourself if we want to truly become complete. His theory of individuation is what is explored here.
Also, Friederich Nietzsche's quote about a dancing star is: "You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star." This quote essentially means that to create something beautiful or extraordinary, one needs to embrace the internal turmoil and uncertainty, allowing it to fuel creativity and produce something brilliant, like a dancing star. BTS in this song are taking a journey to embrace their inner shadows, so they don't lose their passion for their art. That is the message. BTS did talk about how they were losing their passion, and they were experiencing extreme burnout. RM also talked about it, and how they needed to take a break and explore their own selves in order to have longevity as a group. They ended up taking their break in 2022, after the pandemic and the release of their Anthology album, to do solo projects, and complete their mandatory military service.
All seven have released their solo projects, and they have grown as artists over the last 2 and half years. They will be coming back together in June 2025, and they have an album and a world tour planned, but confirmation of when that will be, will not be until they are back and we get word specifically from them. They do want to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of "The Most Beautiful Moment In Life" album series/ERA, in 2025. We should see an album before the end of this year, and they should embark on a World tour in the first half of 2026. Their last performance as a group was October 15, 2022, and they have all said they can't wait to come back together on stage as BTS. In the meantime, we ARMY have been enjoying all the solo content they have released, and continue to release. Even while they were enlisted in the military. They really spoil us 💜

They are rapping and singing about their real fear of losing their passion for their art eg Song writing, Composing, Producing, Rapping Singing. It's also connected to the a famous quote be the famous Dancer Martha Graham "A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing and this is the most painful death'. Also they you'll notice they play each other's Shadow and the album this song is from they are exploring Jungian Psychology with the concept of Ego, Persona and Shadow. They are fighting with their 'Shadow' in this case Fear of losing their passion for their art. They learn to accept that Shadow part of themselves and over come it to continue enjoying their art.

The bright poppy sound are just what the mainstream western media hypes up the most because that goes with their stereotypical expectation from boyband and kpop, but for the most part their discography is deep. In fact all their albums has some central message/theme. Believe it or not they have even explored carl jung's psychological concepts in their discography. The members, specially RM is a nerd and often shares research papers/books that resonate with him and ultimately inspires their music. If you are interested, you can watch "a guide to bts (for haters, skeptics and non-pop fans)" by boracity magazine. Even though it says haters, skeptics, etc. in its title, it is actually a good short video that gives an overview of the musical identities of the members in general.

I am Army since Dynamite era. The more serious songs was the reason I became Army and delve into Kpop. Thank you for reacting to BTS. RM explained in interviews that This song is written based on the movie (with Natalie Portman). The lyrics are inspired by the protagonist’s desperation to transform into what the world wanted from her. He thought about what if she ultimately transform into what the world wants? Does she lose herself to the expectations and the pressure? Does she remember why she was passionate about her craft at all? BTS themselves are under constant pressure to stay successful and relevant on the global stage and the lyrics reflect their thoughts.

To me, this song is about their fear about losing the passion for what they love aka music. Because if they lost their passion that would be like dying. That's where the quote by Martha Graham comes in "A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful". At this time the group was going through a lot they were becoming huge. They were probably afraid that they could lose that which made them start on their journey to begin with which was their love for music. The industry is a tough place, and it has always been important for them to remain themselves. I enjoyed your reaction, enjoy the journey.

The solo dancer is trained in Jimin a comtemporary dancer as well as a hip hop dancer. Mic Drop is a diss track to the many haters and gloating about how many awards they have. They had a lot then but now they are the most award Artists in modern music with 1,400.
They are group based in Rap and R & B 2 of their 3 Rappers were underground Rappers in the underground Hip Hop Scene so yes they have pure rap songs solo songs and sub unit songs with the 3 Rappers.

  • @mar1eru

3:33 Yeah that's not wrong actually.
    4:34 You got it!
Yep so it revolves around their fear of losing their passion in art and music and being burnt out and uninspired. Some of the lyrics were also inspired by the famous quote from dancer Martha Graham "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful."
5:43 Oh man, they have way more deep & serious songs with actual messages and you barely scratched the surface of their discography. The fun pop-py songs are actually the outliers 😅. I'd recommend checking out Run, Fire, Save Me, Not Today, ON, Film Out, Spring Day, Blood Sweat & Tears and Fake Love.
For rap heavy songs they have a lot but they're not title tracks so they dont have MVs (not sure if you react to songs with no MVs)
But I highly recommend checking out one of the rapline members solo works as Agust D (Suga) which are Daechwita and Haegeum. I'm almost certain you will like them not only sonically but also the visuals and lore in it.

Here is a list of some of the BTS songs with deep meaningful messages and what they are about. This is not even all of it and they're mostly the ones about social commentary. Just in case you're interested in checking them out :)
      1. Silver Spoon/Baepsae - critiques societal inequalities and the challenges faced by younger generations who feel burdened by expectations and limited opportunities created by older generations. It highlights the struggles of "spoon classes" (social class distinctions)
      2. No More Dream - about societal pressures on youth to pursue traditional definitions of success, urging listeners to reflect on their true dreams rather than blindly following societal expectations
      3. N.O. - questions the rigid education system and societal norms that force young people to sacrifice their dreams in pursuit of academic and career success, advocating for personal freedom and individuality
      4. Am I Wrong - calls out societal apathy and ignorance toward injustice, urging to question complacency and take a stand for what's right
      5. Spine Breaker - criticizes materialism among youth and the generational divide it creates, particularly on how children pressure their parents to buy expensive items to keep up with trends despite financial strain
      6. UGH! - addresses the destructive nature of hatred and irrational anger in society, especially online, calling out toxic behavior and the spread of negativity
      7. Dis-ease - reflects on the mental and physical burnout caused by modern life, work pressure, and the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the need for balance and self-care
These are under their solo works
      Agust D/Suga
      1. Strange ft. RM - criticizes the contradictions of capitalism and societal norms, questioning the ethical compromises individuals and systems make to survive in a world driven by money and power
      2. Polar Night - about the dangers of hypocrisy in today's social and political climate, highlighting the polarization and extremism in modern society & lack of middle ground and the negative impact of blind allegiance to ideologies or groups. It's critical without being overly aggressive or accusatory. He recognizes that we are all a part of a flawed system, one where we must participate in order to survive.
      3. Haegeum - about liberation and breaking free from societal constraints, challenging the listener to redefine freedom in a world rife with restrictions and control
      4. HUH?! ft. j-hope - his clear message to industry and media professionals who can't help but obsess over their every move, constantly spreading misinformation and gossip
      5. Snooze - reflects on the pressures of chasing dreams in an unforgiving world. It serves as a comforting message to young idols or anyone struggling with self-doubt and societal expectations, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, self care, and staying true to oneself. He gives encouragement, reminding listeners that it's okay to rest and take time for themselves in the face of overwhelming challenges. It speaks to the universal need for support and reassurance amidst the chaos of modern life
      6. 28 - about the uncertainty and melancholy of growing older, questioning identity, purpose, and the passage of time
      RM
      1. Groin - criticizes societal expectations and the pressure to conform, expressing disdain for those who judge without understanding
      2. Wildflower - about the desire to live a humble and tranquil life like a wildflower, rather than a flame that quickly burns out. The song also explores the in- ternal struggle between fame and success, while staying true to who you are
      3. Yun ft. Erykah Badu - about returning to or finding the human self that might have gotten lost in the focus of being an artist or what being an artist requires, and through that process - making even better art

if you explore bts discography's you will understand the depths of their music the lore of its story and the way they convey their genres explore as their music progress and yes, this song is personal to them as they've been facing dilemmas ever since they rise into fame and doing it for so long they're losing or viewing its purpose of what their passion in music like and when that fire came back they wanted to do better and make music that feels connected and related to their fans.
