    Oh, my. Was Kistler really that bad towards the end? What a shame, because I loved watching her. I had heard all about her foot injuries and her problems with her back and ankles and how after a two-year hiatus, she never returned to full form, she was always dancing at half-strength. I last saw her in 1994, in Sleeping Beauty. Apart from some wobbly balances in the Rose Adagio, (no hyperkinetic, preternaturally hyperactive NYCB ballerina can ever do them), she was marvellous.

      I completely disagree. I think she is the ONLY one I have seen so far that can come close to Gelsey. I LOVE Gelsey and am obsessed with that film footage of her and Misha, but this is also wonderful. She dances it with the exact Balanchine style, and most importantly moves in such a light way, even without the partner lifting her, a mark of a true ballerina.

  • @erpollock
    @erpollock Год назад

    This is why I say Balanchine defined dance in the 20th century. As Petipa did in the 19th. A documentary on Balanchine shows that Petipa died very soon after Balanchine was born. It was a dramatic juxtaposition. Balanchine did away with the rows of immobile dancers with arms crossed, standing in position for ages. In a Balanchine traditional ballet like this, every corps member dances.

    Thanks for posting the ballet video. Suite #3 has been one of my favorites along with the other 78 works of Tchaikovsky. I fast forwarded to the Polonaise at 6:20 to see dancers' progress toward the climax at 7:06. The dancers were great but I expected a more powerful choreography like group high jumps rather than just the timid dancing performed here. Barishnikov's version has the same issue at this particular spot IMHO.

    I find it ridiculous that anyone thinks Kistler is better than Kirkland based on this performance. She makes this sublime pas de deux just look exceedingly stodgy and dull. This was unfortunately just part of the 2 decade long absurd and unrelenting effort of Peter Martins to make his wife the prima of the company. She never was anything close to it, especially after her injuries. This was part of the Balanchine Celebration, and any director in their right mind in 1993 would have had Nichols (who had kept the flame of greatness alive for Balanchine and NYCB for 2 solid decades (!) and was still in her prime in 1993) dance this pas, rather than that minor Walpurgisnacht ballet. Nepotism was certainly alive and well (see also Nilas Martins dancing Apollo, eyeroll!) at NYCB at that time.

    Darci Kistler is superior in this role in comparison to the Kirkland version. This tempi is actually faster than the Baryshnikov/Kirkland version but you don't notice that is is fast because Kistler and the NYCB core make it look effortless so that one does not feel the technique or the speed, the dancers simply make you see the movement in the music. Absolutely, balletjones. The tempi are all *slower* here, not faster--I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly be blind enough to think Kistler, who is already a shadow of her former self here and her former self was NEVER anything approaching Kirkland, is better than Kirkland (OR Gregory, OR van Hamel, OR Serrano, OR almost any other Seventies prima) in this role. Kistler's feet are sloppy compared to Kirkland's and she simply does not have the goods any more for the part.

    Yes. I liked Kistler when she was very young, Neryssa--before the serious injury which , I think, altered her entire subsequent career. She was never again as brilliant, daring, technically audacious after the mid-Eighties--and she committed the awful sin of dancing ten years longer than she should ever have remained on stage. I am sorry to say I saw her far too often in those years, and it was mortifying.
