And therein lies the problem. You will find a lot of these people, Trump, DeSantis, and Ramaswamy, just to name a few, have no roots that go beyond the early 1900s. They're either first- or second-generation Americans. They have no ancestors who shed blood for this country so they don't have a firm grasp on its history or why the Revolutionary War (or any of the other wars after) was fought. They want to change America into a country that they think it should be, not what the founding fathers intended. For them, the Constitution has no meaning.
Every military Veteran, living and dead, who fought for our freedom and Democracy, their service and sacrifices they made for all of us will all have been in vain! They didn't fight, bleed and die just so that a grifting draft dodger, wanna-be dictator could turn this country into an indefinite lifetime autocratic dictatorship. This should *scare* all of us! While certainly not deeming to find disagreement with David Frum, I would like to inject that the mistake of his premise is that they purport that this is a function of conservatism. Conservatism, in & of itself, isn't necessarily a racist concept; however, even though you're only concentrating on the political aspect of it, it's impossible to deny the STRONG overtones of white supremacy present in today's maga movement.
What I believe we're witnessing is that the Old South abandoned democracy after they lost the Civil War, and then, LBJ's signing of the Civil Rights Act, against STRONG, vehement objections from the same contingency of white folks whose moral heirs now make up the trump party, and, only now have they been allowed enough access to power that they can make a vigorous attempt at implementing their traitorous, racist agenda...take us backwards in time...make America "great" again...for white folks.

You may want to change that, even if you don't agree with most liberal policies. The majority of Republican lawmakers seem (to me, at least) to either tacitly support this, or seem to be too afraid of Trump's ability to end their political career, by not supporting their campaign, to speak against him. Trump was definitely, at one point, able to make someone's campaign sink if he didn't back them, or even get the RNC to ignore them, but I don't know how true that is now.
Something like 25% of Republican voters say they support Trump MORE after the indictments, and I'm happy that a larger portion do not support him. The trouble is, I think a much, much larger percentage will still vote for Republican Congresspeople who stand behind Trump and his actions. I get "I don't like liberal policies," but liberal lawmakers-- some of them, at least-- are the ones who're really pushing back on Trump's desires to become a dictator-- and, as noted here, he absolutely is headed that direction and openly so. Republicans in Congress, for the most part and for various reasons, aren't.
Ok then will you be part of the solution? Will you vote Blue up and down the ticket until Republicans return to "normalcy"?

Over ten years ago I never would have thought I might live to see the end of American Democracy, but it seems to be a frighteningly realistic concept recently. Before Trump, I never wanted to register or identify with a single political party - but now I don't think I can ever consider voting GOP, which leaves Dems as my only real option unless the voting system changes to allow more than 2 parties without splitting the vote.
Sorry you have been disillusioned. The USA has not now, nor ever been a Democracy.
We have always been a Constitutional REPUBLIC.

While the most simple form of voting, it creates the issues of two-party rule and split votes. There are alternative voting systems that could alleviate this (& introduce more competition into politics), but it doesn't seem likely that they'll be adopted on a federal level anytime soon (& certainly never if we devolve into a autocracy.)

He noted that this is “the most massive attack against free speech in United States’ history,” that the Biden administration has “blatantly ignored the First Amendment’s right to free speech,” and that the Biden administration “almost exclusively targeted conservative speech.”

I can see some States telling Dictator Trump to bugger off, and then seceding from the US. Just because Trump gets control of D.C. doesn't automatically grant him kingship over all the States. What's he going to do? Send in the Army to convert those States to Trumpism? It wouldn't be long before patriots with long guns started to converge on D.C. They'd only have to get lucky once, Trump would have to be lucky every time.

His successor is likely to be younger, fitter and more mentally capable.
