My absolute favorite Cobra figure! I think that removable part of the visor has a handle so that it could be used independently. As a handheld night vision scope.
Phenomenal figure. I love it. I'm collecting ever Viper from '85, the Tele-Viper until '90. I think I'm only missing the Secto-Viper, Frag-Viper and Laser-Viper. I have the 19, I believe. Maybe 20.
One of your coolest vids to date! Great figure! That scope attached to his mask fits in his hand. It is the kind of scope a spotter would use. I am glad it takes advantage of micro-miniature electronic components, otherwise it would be the size of a Delorean's hood. On subs, we live a different life. We can go upwards of 90 days with no sun. There are times when officers and/or enlisted are required to take the periscope, at night. In order to allow their pupils to fully dilate, they wear red tinted lenses in enclosed glasses/googles. The full spectrum of light is blocked, except red, which allows full pupil dilation. The same thing is done when manning the bridge on the surface, at night. There is no reason to live in darkness, when your brain can be tricked into giving you night vision without the psychological side effects. We also work different shifts every day; the cycle repeats every two days: it is as always either six hours on, twelve hours off, or six hours on, 18 hours off. For example, on watch/duty 0000-0600 and from 0600 to 1800 we would eat, sleep, perform maintence, train, socialize, watch movies, read books, etc; then on watch/duty 1800-0000 and from 0000 to 1200 we would eat, sleep, perform maintence, train, socialize, watch movies, read books; finally, we would come back on at 0000. The cycle repeats. There is no circadian rhythm on subs, and we shift to GMT/ZULU time once we get underway. I think Cobra keeps Night Vipers in the dark because they want them a little screwy, lol.
Way to go Susan, thanks for jumping in and finishing the show. You know what they say, behind every great man, there is a great woman. Lookout HCC788 your job might be in jeopardy. ;) I loved the reference to Mortimer Mouse. That is what Walt wanted to call Micky, but his wife told him to change the name.
Most compelling ending bit ever. Save that man! Lol. Having had a Night Viper back in the day I had no idea until today that he could store his weapon on his leg. I always thought it was some weird bit of kit that he had. Thanks HCC!
Great job HCC. I can relate to your wife's veiled threats regarding Joe purchases. I get the 'ol stinkeye after I return from the local toy show every month. Your skits never fail to make me laugh, and your wife does a great job.
All these guys that said " After 85 or 88 GI JOE went downhill" "I don't bother with Joe figures after the early 80s" need to look at Night Viper one of the best IMO Cobras ever 🌙
This one was among the last ever GI Joe/Cobra action figures I owned back in the day; as you well put it, it's a real shame a figure that looks as wickedly cool as this one came to the shelves so late. By the way, your daughter is a very talented artist; nice renderings.
This, Alley-Viper and HEAT-Viper were the last joes I bought, even though I had long walked away from the toys. They just looks so cool. And it's been mentioned below, but I always thought the backpack extension over his left shoulder was a knife molded to the pack. And I always envisioned the removable part on the head gear as a flashlight that can be hand held or work with the night-scope. Great review as always. Keep up the great work!
Interesting that a couple people thought the bit on the backpack was a knife handle. I didn't pick up on that, since there is no sculpting lower on the backpack to indicate a sheathed knife. But apparently that's something others noticed. Thanks-- I'll keep doing my best!
A really awesome figure review. I realized by placing the trigger of his rifle in one hand and grip the sling in the other he can aim the weapon just as well as any other figure with damaging the figures hands or weapon. The bit on the backpack I always believed was the handle of a knife that was suppose to be removable but was molded as a single piece.
The colors are the same, and all the accessories are there. Only difference is the backpack looks like it's from the 90's run, if you know what I mean. The plastic is a little different, but the front of the cardback is the same. They look great in the collection. Comparing some of the foreign Joes may be a cool idea for a future video. A lot of the loose ones don't cost much more than their American counterparts. The carded funskools are super affordable.
one of the few cobras I missed back then, I waited too long... it was not my favorite for that year, or even popular in general, lots were left over on the shelves, I flunked that one. looks like yours is damaged on the elbows, cracked.... my fav cobra soldier was the bat, the vipers, soldiers, and c guards. because of your excellent work, I miss my collection. I wish I could buy some new 1 rst catalog serie pieces, but, with improved articulations. I d really love the team to all be uniformly green. stalker was my first fig pick and with the mobat tank as my 1rst vehicle. the let down was to have 2 grand slam.... jet pack and laser came with him instead of another member. the design was so advanced, it d still look good today.
Great job to the young illustrator for the introduction art work. I loved the color scheme for the night-viper, the rifle was one of the draw backs to putting him in my top 10 cobra figures. A communications pack is decent, but if they were going to be out in the bush for an extended amount of time or even in urban areas they needed a bit more. A pack similar to shockwave, falcon or beachhead would have been nice, someting multi-funtional. Low-Light, Pathfinder, Recondo,Hit and Run and Tunnel Rat would be the optimal foe for these great cobra troops for jungle night fighting, with shockwave leading the way in an urban arena. overall, yes night-viper is a top tier figure, just not towards the front of the line. So far really great reviews, and i have a hunch that a lower class of figure or vehicle is due to come up. Don't worry, if dedicated fans can slog through the lobotomaxx and icream soldier review, somewhat unscathed, nothng else could be quite as bad. Great job once again to the HCC788 family.
Lol love it. I had this figure. My only complaint, he should have came with an additional sniper rifle and the weapon he already comes with would serve as his back up, like rock n rolls rifle. I need this figure in 2019.... YOJOE!!
Kudos to you for an interesting and entertaining COBRA figure review!!! This was one of my favorite COBRA figures due to the nature of the trooper: night trooper. Their sneaky, silent, and deadly... second to a ninja, of course. I'm surprised COBRA doesn't enlist troopers with some ninja training as officers in the Night Viper corps. I do have one disturbance in the Force with this figure: has anyone explained why the elbow joints are a different shade of green (almost blue-greenish) and why wasn't it corrected during production? It's not part of the original color scheme because the knee joints are not that color. Just wondering... Please continue posting great figure reviews for viewers/subscribers like myself and others to view during this REDACTED medical crisis we're all going through. Hmm... surprised COBRA wasn't behind this world crisis... or are they!!!! HAIL Hooded Cobra Commander 788!!!!
yea this was one of my most favorite cobras ..it's a shame they didn't get more exposure...I had a couple of these and I loved em ...loved the ending too ... LMFAOOO ....nice work man !!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the ending. Susan thought it was amusing. It's easy to see why this would be a favorite. If this figure had been released when I was still collecting, I would have been all over it!
great review great figure and your daughter does great drawings my only issue with purchasing the night viper is the fact army building has drove the price up on the aftermarket
That is true. I was lucky to pick up my Night Viper from a local seller who didn't really know what it was. I got it at a steal. Any figure that can be army-built tends to run high. Frustrating for collectors who just want one.
They are very similar. My only gripe is that the accessories are green and yellow and the plastic quality seems to be more brittle. I bought the indian version years ago because they were cheaper at the time and to a armybuilder that was gold. I used the American version as a officer.
My second favorite of the Vipers, Alley Viper v1 being my favorite. I am glad you did this review. I never paid much attention to the figures detail, until you pointed it out. I guess I couldn't get past how lousy the gun is.
Thanks, Byron. The gun is unfortunate. It could have been worse. Those accessories trees from the 90s were worse. The gun could have been made better quite easily.
@@christianhafer9819 I must agree with you. I have bought several of these since he posted this video. The folks in Hasbros think tank, knocked this one out of the park. I've even given his shotgun a different look. It's pretty sweet.
Your closet door opens...inward? I don't have a wide experience in closet doors, but that seems slightly...odd. Also it's a shame his gun is so weird. This could have been a really cool, like silenced SMG with a night scope or something. Maybe some explosives or booby traps to plant while he's sneaking around at night on his backpack, too.
This came too late for me as by 1988 I believe my last and fav joe ever was Hit N Run but I would have def snagged him with my paperboy money I had as a kid but by this time I lost interest in this but still a epic figure
@@Ionicblood666 Good. Nothing peeves me more than when someone says they miss their old toys. And I'm like, what's preventing you from buying them again? I started collecting Joe's again almost 2 years ago, and I have over 160 figures and 50 plus vehicles and playsets. I don't mess around.
My absolute favorite Cobra figure!

I was out of G.I. Joe by this time also, but I still picked this guy up. Just thought he was cool.
Always loved the Night Viper I remember in 89 when I saw the artwork for the new vipers I was like wow I got Night HEAT and Frag pretty quickly.
I too owned and loved the Frag Viper. I own several these days. May not have been a favorite to most but, one to me.
