I've been commuting by bike for almost half a year now. I love competing against my own segment times and struggling to hold the KOM. I feel so much more awake after fifteen minutes of cardio and love feeling that wind in my face.
1. Bike commuting is not only good for the enviroment, but also to cut down on traffic jams. TJ is costing the economy bilions of dollars each year, due to lost working hours and goods not getting on time on their destination. I hate getting stuck in a traffic jam. With cycling it may get busy on the cycle path, but never a traffic jam. 2. In the Netherlands you can bike to a train station, take a train to your destination city/ town, rent a Public Transport bike for 4 dollars to get to your destination. Regular commuters have in their job city an old bike at the station, to take them to and from work. I spray painted an old bike for a friend in zebra colors, so he could find his bike in the sea of bikes of the parking garage. 3. Also in my country, every artirial road has separated bike paths, next to it. So that is safety. That is why the Dutch do not wear helmets. Cycling is sooo safe, that the change of getting hit by a car is ultra low. 4. Most cycle routes are away for busy motor traffic. In the countryside on less used roads or sole bike paths. In the cities through residential streets, which have a speed limit of 19 mph (30 kmh, we use the metric system). So bikes and cars can safely interact. So safe, that children can ride their bike on the street. 5. I use cycling not just for commuting, but also for shopping. Doing groceries and buying other stuff. So, I use my car only for trips outside of my city, on average once a week.

As a proud member of the bicycle commuting master race, I feel compelled to tell you that bicycles also work between October and May, even when it's below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and snowy and icy outside.
Another reason why I would like to get started in commuting with bike is because I would like to live inside of a camper van that can be towed via bicycle. Or if there are better accommodation options for the bike of course I would like to do that as well. It's environmentally friendly and I get to save extra cash on the go as well.
You never get stuck in traffic. You can stop right outside your favourite coffee shop. You can carry a lot more stuff on a bike than people think. Or you can even convert an old cheap kiddie-trailer into a cargo trailer if you need to carry even more than your bike can carry. You can usually take your bike on public transport if you have to travel further than you can cycle in a day. The only limit is your own imagination - just go and do it!
