10 Stereo Widening tips I wish I knew when I started

- We all want wide, clear, punchy mixes. Here are my top 10 ways for achieving super-wide mixes, in an easy to understand, step-by-step tutorial.

Stereo width is super-important when it comes to a pro-sounding mix, and there are a few tools at our disposal. This video goes through my ten favourite techniques, and how to to use them. We cover:
1. Auto-panning (Using auto-panners. SoundToys Pan Man is awesome).
2. Reverb (Standard. However, aux reverb is generally best as many elements can "sit" in the same 3d space)
3. Delay (Same as above. Aux...100% wet) Ping pong is nice, or a simple delay with a stereo widening plugin afterwards).
4. The Haas Effect (Duplicate a signal, delay by a few milliseconds (up to about 24), then pan the original left and the delayed signal right. Always check in mono as can easily throw up some weird effects and phase issues).
5. Sound Design (Most control....do it from the oscillator stage in your synth. I prefer crafting the waves individually instead of detune as that can cause phase issues).
6. Parallel Processing (Send a copy of the signal to a parallel channel and process different from the dry. Then you can pan each signal independently).
7. Mid-side Processing (EQ or compress the sides differently from the centre)
8. Chorus, Phase and Flange FX (Can make stuff nice and wide but colours the sound, so make sure you want that effect. As usual, check in mono)
9. Stereo Imaging Plugins (Some really good ones nowadays that seem to wipe out a lot of the phase issues that they used to cause. Ozone Imager multiband is awesome as you can keep the bass mono and spread out the upper frequencies).
10. Double-tracking (Great for live takes of vocals and / or guitars / acoustic instruments. Just record more than once and pan the different takes accordingly).

Yea, you forgot making stereo with different eq on left and right channel. Similar to what you did in M/S, but you do it on L/R.

Also the haas effect seems to work better if you at least slightly pan one of the signals to the left and the other to the right and then delay one slightly it makes it sounds extremely stereo just be careful to check it in mono too but especially for guitars and stuff from kontakt I’ll put one signal 100% left and the other 100% right with a slight delay and then turn them down and have a third mono signal with no delay or anything that’s louder than the stereo ones and it makes it really thick and atmospheric

Love these quick tips- no waffle and straight to the point. For extreme textural widening I’ve seen myself put a stereo imager after the delay or reverb on the send bus - needs to be applied carefully though of course! :-)

I was looking for this tutorial from one last year, thanks. One question for you "Do we need to make (or follow) every elements as per phase correlation meter?" i heard lots of track where sound engineer using extreme left & right panning or effect in their particular elements like 'synth bell, hi-hat, fx etc' help me, clear my doubt.

Sir can you make video on automating stereo width....
You could use grain delay as a stereo widener. It's basically just putting it in time mode --> 1ms --> turn up the spray a to like 30ms or something (just depends what you want) --> and then find the sweet spot with the frequency parameter of grain delay.
And Corpus for sure. Arguably the most underused tool in Ableton

Hi, really enjoying this video! I was just wondering what the definition of Sound Design is? Is it the fact that you are altering the source "instrument" itself, and that sound design refers to instrumentation / arrangement, as opposed to manipulating the output of the instrument?

If you add reverb to a panned instrument doesn't it take back stereo, as there is stereo knob on some reverb?

@@EDMTips its ok, i found out what i was doing wrong. I was dependent on the waves paz analyser which was saying my mix was anti phasing, downloaded the izotope imager (which is amazing) and it said i was in phase. So all good. Keep up the great videos btw.

How do I go about switching to mono? Putting a utility on the master channel? But then how do I setup the shortcut?
Command K in MacOS to open up keyboard shortcuts, and probably CTRL K in Windows.
set the utility plugin in mono on the master bus, "cmd k" to configurate the shortcut to off and on the plugin... ¿right?
@@riomariogroove Yep...that's exactly right! I use "alt M" as my shortcut as nothing else is assigned to it, and it's easy to reach on my keyboard
Yeah, you forgot L-R EQ:ing, including PS22 and the likes.
