Also known as Wallingford Bypass Level Crossing.
The only level crossing on the Chosley and Wallingford heritage railway, located just outside Wallingford on a busy bypass road. The crossing was installed in the early 1990s when the Boxley Way (Wallingford Bypass) ring-road was constructed. Since the installation, the crossing has had its old halogen lights replaced with LED sets, however, the original barriers and alarms still remain, and are in a very tired and decrepit state. Therefore, this crossing could be considered very rare with its aged equipment. Four alarms here sound very shot and the barriers look quite old, being manufactured by "Smiths Industries Hydraulics Company". The heritage railway only have a few running days a year so this crossing is rarely used. The LED pedestrian lights do not flash when active which is quite unique. This video was filmed in 4K!

This crossing gets the best alarm of the year award
Yeah lol
More like worst.
Many congratulations on reaching this milestone! It really is no small feat - you really deserve this after years of effort and hard work and it's paying off lovely. It was you who inspired me to start uploading, and it was you who supported my channel from the very start 😁 thanks ever so much 😁😁😁. Just congrats!!!!! Shame I couldn't film this crossing with you lot tho.
@Anthony Guarino unfortunately I wasn't there on this date. I find it a real shame I wasn't tbf
Thanks very much mate 😁😁 And you're more than welcome 😊😄
@@SouthEastLevelCrossings Looks like that other channel you replied to got killed off
I was pretty sad to see the halogen lights go. Those alarms are very bad! Great video Jamie 😎😀
Thanks! 😁 Yeah, shame I never filmed it with halogens but at least the old alarms and barriers were still there
I’m confused as to how the council thought to replace the perfectly fine halogen lights but not the alarms? The barriers here regularly malfunction nowadays, council need to renew the crossing with new alarms and barriers. Possibly adding more road paint too?
@@gemth9853 Its not the councils responsibility, its that of the railway. Network Rail gets rid of alot of equipment and many heritage railways capitalise on that, I imagine thats where they got those LED lights from.
@@gemth9853 how do they malfunction?
Blimey, you weren’t joking about the state of that crossing alarm-it sounds positively ill! But what a great find nonetheless!
Thanks! 😁 Yeah this crossing is in a right state. Needs a good looking at. Bit of luck with this one as the railway only runs a few weekends every year. And thanks! 😄
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel yeah, I live in cholsey and the reason the dont maintain it is because the crossing only gets used 2-4 times a year, Cholsey wallingford railway, I wish we had more level crossings round here, but in 1967 they replaced the cholsey crossing with a bridge and raised the railway, because before wigwags, people drove through and we had to many accidents, and not enough staff to manually operate them.
Ah I didn't know there used to be a crossing there.
what does Blimey mean?
@@timothyma3135 Merely an expression of surprise or excitement, descended from the original “Blame/Blind me!” used in the 19th century. It’s perfectly harmless, but at the same time should be chosen tactfully.
*0:58** omg lol 🤣*
Ik sounds like its dying!
Alternate title:
Crossing alarm is having a bad time
This is my local crossing! Also great vid btw 😀
Cool, it's a very interesting crossing this one. I'll be returning to it eventually. Thanks 👍
Great video and crossing! I will admit, I do like those aged alarms, gives the crossing a unique sound, lol. Congrats on 20k subscribers as well!
Thanks! 😃 Yeah it does 👍
1:14 How to burn calories
Great video
Thanks 😊
It is very rare, only down when the cholsey wallingford steam train comes through! I've been on it.
Cool.
The crossing is owned by Oxfordshire County Council who sub contact to Network Rail to look after it. I have seen this crossing many times as I live quite nearly (Abingdon) and have been on the railway many times. Nice video!!
Thanks 😁 Yeah I knew the council owned and maintained it. It's quite an interesting crossing being on the bypass road.
Congratulations for beating 20K subscribers! :)
Thanks very much! 😁
Thanks
Short and sweet! Nice 👍
Thank you 👍
not quite the only one but still quite substantial for a small heritage line.
Well, it's the only major road crossing on this line. There is a few private User Worked crossings though, one which is just down the line from here
Alarm sounds like it's dead. Also congrats on 20k subs!
Yeah, all but one of the alarms are really bad sounding. And thanks! 😎
I feel as if a car crash would happen here as it’s literally built on a dual carriageway do they have warning lights further up the road?
The road is actually single carriageway upto the crossing, and can be seen from a good distance anyway.
Amazing! Congrats! 🙂
Thanks very much 😁
That siren sounded ill @ 1:00
Poor alarms sound as though they've had it, good for them though for persevering to the end whilst others just give up. Pleasing to see approved equipment installed on a heritage line, surprisingly uncommon it seems. 20,000 subscribers eh? Who knew Level Crossings were so popular? Congratulations!
Yeah, I'm surprised they installed a crossing when building the bypass here in the early 90s. The alarms seem to have had it, the halogens have already gone. And thanks! I never knew it would be so popular either 😂
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel The thing is you don't just film level crossings - you also film traffic lights and bascule bridges lol. 😉
It was a race between the railway being reopened and the bypass being built. The railway won :)
I was thinking the same thing!
Congrats on 20K!
Thank you! 😁
Makes a great Alarm Clock!!!
Yeah it does haha 😉
kind of reminds me of Kilmakee level crossing in county Antrim (NI)
Those alarms are so harsh😖 but good crossing though
1:17 you can really hear that alarm straining
Yeah you can, they need replacing
ok now who dropped an anvil on that alarm
It wasn't me ;)
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel u sure? 🤨
This video has also been re uploaded by someone
Great video!
Thank you! 😃
Good
Thanks 👍
Where is that
The location is in the description, its on the road bypassing the town of Wallingford in Oxfordshire
Nice video and how old is that crossing cause the sound is kind of strange
Thanks 😁👍 And this crossing and bypass was constructed in the early 1990s. The alarms and barriers seem to have aged rather quickly at this crossing.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel the line has been here is 1973, but it used to be manual gates.
Mawshome this was installed in 1993
Strange crossing but that's ok! Great video!:-:-)
Thanks! 😃
Alarms are dead
I find this crossing interesting. I wonder how old those alarms are?
This crossing was installed I think mid - late 1980s, and the only equipment changed so far has been the lights to LEDs.
I believe they have been there since 1993 when the Level Crossing was originally opened
Who activates this crossing is done by tredel on track or a plunger
Treadles on the track for this crossing
Nice video tho.
Thank you 😊
the alarm was faulty but nice video tho
All four alarms were faulty to some extent. They've been replaced since though. Thanks :)
Remember this used to be my favourite crossing to watch on youtube, that KINGANDCASTLE channel. Remember he used to upload good videos of it (:
Oh yeah, I use to watch those videos all the time. It felt weird being at the actual crossing having seen it so many times on Google Maps and RUclips
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Oh yeah definitely, felt similar for me at Lincoln Central as well having seen that a lot.
If this was in Romania it would be a state of the art crossing.
Yeah I can imagine lol 😉
Hey can you make a version that’s non-4K
I filmed both videos here in 4K so next time I go I'll film it in just Full HD
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel ok
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel and i subscribed
Oh my god but what is this HORRIBLE ALARM !!!!!
I love how you just see us all run into place except you and Adam lol o thought that was really funny haha.
I'd've been running into place if I was there too lol.
Yeah lol - running to those alarms whilst I'm standing in the middle of the road 😂😂
Congratulations on 20K! Interesting crossing setup there.
Thanks! 😎 Yeah, it's a very interesting crossing on a very busy bypass road.
Looks like a desert out there for yous
Faulty alarm?
Three out of the four were faulty here. This crossing and equipment has been here a while (except the LED lights)
I love this crossing! But that alarm needs to be fixed
There's four alarms here, one of them was not working, but the other three sound really bad. The crossing was installed in the early 1990s. The warning lights have been replaced but the alarms and barriers haven't yet. I'm planning to revisit this crossing in the Autumn to see it again.
It a old train
Those guys running with cameras make me laugh
* special, very rare, broken alarm*
That alarm needs a strepsil!!
They all need a strepsil 😂
What a horrible alarm!
That flipping alarm! It sounds like it needs a bit of WD40!
It needs replacing completely for sure, although this crossing is on a not so busy heritage railway, and it's on a bypass that hardly any pedestrian walk on
What a weird alarm!
All but one are really faulty
really weird alarm
Yeah they're all rather faulty
that was a weird alarm 😕
Yeah, it's quite an old crossing and all the alarms sound weird.

0:58 No. Just. No.
The alarms sound pretty horrid lol
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel horrid?!
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel I can think of a worse adjective than that!
