Thanks, I find Flatten really neat too.
I've just tried and regular Path/Break apart seems to work too.

Thanks alot for this information, it helps alot. I'm just wondering why you havn't break them apart directly from the path menu? you broke them apart using that extention option instead? is there any bonus tips behind that : )

Would the Shape Builder be useful for that process?
I just tried it and achieved (I think) the same results in fewer steps. Give it a try.

Yes. It is useful for the example I did here. But if you got an SVG image already made with many layers, this is an extremely simple way to flatten all those layers.

thank you for explaining! I was wondering if you knew how to reduce color blocks after digitizing an image. I get images from google and fix them up as a pes file. But even if I chose to trace bitmap with 6 colors there ends up being more than 20 in the stitch plan. Do you know how to fix this?

Just for clarity, I'm assuming you mean there are 20 color changes and not actually 20 different colors. By color changes I mean for example it will stitch red, green, blue, black, red, green, red, blue, green, etc?

Circles do not flatten when using the Flatten feature; they simply disappear! Squares, rectangles and stars will flatten, but any circles are removed entirely. What am I missing?

I'm not sure. You could try locking the circle and then flatten. That might work as a work around.
