I'm currently about halfway through the RRTK 1 Anki deck. I set it to 50 new cards a day so I could get through the kanji in a little over a month. I can feel myself understanding more and more words when I immerse, and I recognize a shocking (to me at least) number of kanji. You've been a great inspiration so thank you and God bless you. Keep on doing what you're doing!

That's some serious rrtk progress! I'm glad I could be of some inspiration and wish ya the best on your journey! 🤟

I took the N2 this time around (first time taking the JLPT) and I found the first part of the test mostly pretty easy, but the listening part of the test surprisingly gave me a lot of trouble. The hardest part about it for me was just the fact that you only have one chance to hear the dialogue and I just had a difficult time focusing on what was being said. I also think it really hurt me that I didn't take notes, especially for the long dialogue questions at the end which asked about specific dates. I would wind up missing the important bits of info or forget what I was supposed to be listening for. I tend to think of my listening comprehension as being pretty decent since I can watch shows in Japanese or have pretty sophisticated conversations in Japanese with pretty good comprehension, but I didn't do any practice at all for listening to bits of dialogue and answering questions about it, which I think made things a lot harder for me on this section (whereas I actually had some JLPT study books for grammar and reading comprehension that gave me a lot of practice answering those kinds of questions). I think I may still have done well enough on the listening section to pass but not totally confident about it. Sucks you have to wait two months to get the results!

Must've missed this comment, but I appreciate your input and sorry for the delay in response! I heard a lot from people that the listening part was the killer and the fact that one round through is pretty rough. Heck, even in english sometimes I have to ask for a repetition lmao so note taking was completely key for it. I do think natural comprehension generally plays a pretty big roll in how well you do but there are those little nuances that still make it a test that just make it a little unnatural. Hopefully results come soon!

You're going to school in Chico?? lmao. Not only do we have the same name but we live relatively close as well. Crazy.
If you pass, it's a great flex. Although, in the event that you did fail, you'll kill it next year. No matter what, you've made progress a lot of your viewers (including myself) wish they could (and will hopefully) achieve. As you said, you're learning the language for it's uses, not to pass a test and you've gotten really damn far. Got my fingers crossed that you passed though.

That's crazy haha, but actually I'm Chico State Alum now 🤟😂
That shall be the plan! I do acknowledge the fact that I have made some gains and so I do give myself that, but I definitely don't wanna over state it 😂. I'm hoping as well, but next time, ima make sure there's no reason to hope haha!

Just took the N2 Sunday! Share the feeling 100%. I’m not studying Japanese to pass a test. In my case the JLPT is to facilitate the process of finding a position in Japan….
I don’t think I’ll pass this time but I felt that I wasn’t that far off!

Ayye the feeling is there though, the next time you'll kill it if you keep it steady. It does look like N2 will totally benefit you though as well so it's just an added bonus xD! If there's a next time, I wish ya the best!

Congrats on finishing the N1! Like another commenter said, the JLPT is very much a test of both your Japanese knowledge and test taking skills. I feel that your way of studying Japanese (from what I can tell, just reading) isn’t well suited for the taking of the JLPT, unless you take a month or two off before the exam to cram timed practice papers and dedicated grammar study. Of course I’m not trying to discount your way of studying - do what you like the most!
On a side note, did you consider taking the N2 instead? I started studying around the same time as you did and managed to score relatively well for July’s N2.

Thank you and Ofc! There's no way I could continue on going about the JP journey if I didn't consume content I liked, in this case, reading rn :)!
My decision to take the N1 was from several reasons, but the main ones being: 1: N1 is the "highest" test for second-langusge acquisition that I know of and I wanted to know what it felt like and 2: I personally don't need the certificate for jobs/school, taking it sheerly test my N1 test taking ability.
There are some other things, but those would be the main ones. As well, congrats on the N2!

I will say this. You are more studying for a test than anything else. I know that sounds obvious especially from me just typing it but you are probably at the very least functional in Japanese and most places really only ever require the N2. You probably know more than you think you know already but again it is more of a fact that this is more of test taking skill than your lack of actual Japanese ability. So I wouldn't beat yourself over this if you didn't past.

Thank you! I agree and I am along the lines that N1 MUST come when my ability to consume native content is almost natural. Still have a long road for that though 😂.
I can function, I must admit, but I think conversationally I have still yet to reach the level that I want.
