I think best example is, great mage is average CPU, miyuki is Best grade CPU and Tatsuya if beyond best grade GPU. And magic is a program running on a computer. Miyuki can use any program/magic at highest level, where Tatsuya can use even stronger and higher program/magic if conditions are right. Magic system is quite complex in this story and anime leave a lot of details out.
Technically, she did in fact kill him, but also did so with the knowledge that he has a regeneration sequence that will revert his body to a condition before any injury. That’s why she called it a joke and laughed
