When you talk about how your style doesn't fit youtube, I just feel like I want you to know your extra effort is GREATLY appreciated. Your eye for detail and aesthetics are what brought me to Geekism, and its what makes me come back every time. It's so meditative to see you work hard at putting down custom fences just so a behind the scenes piece of the park feels like its lived in. Keep up the good work!
I share the gripe about the negative guest reaction to the backstage buildings. At my home aquarium, they're very heavily focused on sea turtle rehabilitation. Theres a whole exhibit where you can see any rescued hatchlings and all the work that goes into caring for them. My local zoo has a few spots where you can see behind the scenes as well. Their water filtration system is actually an exhibit too because its heavily focused on natural filtration which is really frickin cool.
The staff building feature is really dumb in this game So many zoos have the feed room, vet clinic, breeding rooms for reptiles/amphibs/inverts as attractions Zoos charge people a lot of money to do keeper for the day experiences where most of the fun is going behind the scenes (and also getting really close to the animals, I fed a pregnant tapir a banana when I was a kid and is probably the reason I chose this as a career path) And even zoos that don't have the behind the scenes stuff as features usually only have it separated from the guests by a wall It's by far my biggest problem with planet zoo
There is one thing I bloody hate about these videos. Every time I go back into my own park I'm slapped across the face real hard with my own inability to make anything look even half decent. :D
You can build a mini bridge with the climbing structure pieces so the keepers can get over the river. I had to do that with my grizzlies. I had built their habitat into a massive mountain with river and water wall... then realized keepers couldn’t cross lol so I built low platform bridges and it worked awesome
If you do stick with the train idea, 2 popular trains for foliage are the "Agawa Canyon Tour Train" out of Sault Ste Marie, and the "Rocky Mountaineer" which is the famous one with the glass roofed train cars. I am not sure what part of Canada your park is sitting in, (Ontario or West Alberta/East BC) but these are 2 very famous train lines that combine original track paths and amazing scenery. I've never been on them, but half of the famous pictures of Canada are probably from stops on these paths, or from Algonquin Provincial Park. For more cliff material, Barron Canyon in Algonquin Provincial Park is a large canyon carved out during the retreat of the glaciers. As Lake Ontario and Erie were filled with ice at this point, the water had to find an alternate path out. This path was across Algonquin Park, down the Ottawa River and out the rest of the St Lawrence. So the canyon was carved from extreme velocity water at volumes greater than the current Niagara Falls. It seems to match the process that Mike Sheets described, just with a lot more water also. As for the track itself, Planet Zoo actually has "ferry" for a track option, where there is 1 car that runs forwards and backwards on the same track, which would probably look better from the point of view of the "old rail line" history.
My favourite youtube series at the moment. Hope it continues for many more episodes as I cant wait to see how the finished zoo looks!!!! I appreciate how much effort and detail goes into these videos tho... but keep up the good work!!!! P.s I love the cable car idea!!!! Maybe it could go over some habitats as well????
Mike had a great idea with the marshland at the end of the river! It qould be a great tie in to the area the zoo is based in considering Northern North America is very wet consistently and has millions of marshes. Plus, if you add the marsh, the most common place you're going to find moose is a wetland, and it would be shocking if they weren't added. Also, is there a chance that instead of building past the staff facilities to go to the waterfall, you could possibly make a walking trail around and behind the grizzly ridge to bring together the idea of the importance of nature to the park? Have different examples of the habitat and landforms that may be seen there and include some different events that were important to the region, like the fur trade, a native american village, and other such events. Those are just some ideas off the top of my head. I love what you're doing with everything and think you have one of the coolest park designs so far out of all the big Planet RUclipsrs. Thanks for reading!
My local Zoo in Jacksonville Florida has a few parts of it that shows the more care and medical side of zoo keeping. It’s very interesting, last time I saw it a poor koala was sick. Plus the Zoo is also a botanical garden zoo to demonstrate local plants and scenery too.
Not that I think this park will ever have enough played time to get the bear pregnant and then have a cub - but if that happens, check the walk able terrain for the cubs as well. I have had quite the stress trying to catch tiger cubs squeezing out of barrier gaps, and a crocodile baby just straight up climbing over rocks and out of the habitat (that the parents couldn't climb). So a bear cub might be able to slip under or around that river fence
I agree I love seeing backstage. My zoo has tours of the backstage and they did a really cool thing with the penguins where the entire filtration system is behind glass and it explains how it all works
Out of all the other RUclipsrs, I find that you are an inspiration. You put so much effort and research for getting things right. Gorgeous build, but my only issue is there are no donation bins.
I put Red Lemurs into my zoo because the zoopedia said it was hard to get them to reproduce in captivity. I already had three ghariels that produced a litter of seven within a few game days and seventeen flamingoes so as a newbie I thought that was enough to manage. However, within a day two of the Lemurs reproduced and I went from four to six! It’s contraceptives all round for now. Phew!
@Geekism Hi Jonti, just a little something to clarify about fonts! Frontier used fonts in Planet Zoo that are free commercial-use fonts we all can find on the web (ex: Noto Sans is a famous Google font (Apache License), Boogaloo is from John Vargas Beltran available at Font Squirrel (SIL Open Font License)....) so all Free to use fonts, not designed for the game, no licence issues, just like in Planet Coaster (yes, same free licenses), but nowadays we have more and more free pro fonts available, especially since webfonts became a basis. So this might explain why those fonts are more classical not so themed as were PlanCo fonts (obviously that was a choice they made at the time, themed fonts I mean).

They have the scenery rating in place for most staff building. I think the scenery rating should negate the negative impact, ie if the scenery rating or the staff building is 100, then it hs no negative impact on the guests.
During my first sandbox zoo, I thought I was being clever by creating a raised plaza over staff buildings... Yeah, no one was happy about it lol. I do hope they change how to hide certain utilities and buildings

Hahaha true! Great vid as always. Hows your build going for Eziliis community zoo? Om excited to see it but also not cause you’ll make us all look like ammateurs hahaha 😜

I live around a few great zoos and I find it easy to find all the animals at them. The Zoos I am talking about near me: Potawatomi Zoo, Fort Wayne Zoo, Binder Park Zoo, Detroit Zoo and Toledo Zoo
To your worry about poop covering the other side of the river, could you possibly turn the walkway over the water fence into a functioning path with stairs down on the other side? I don't know if that would work. Just something I thought.
Question, cuz I didn't catch in the video: Did you keep the glass barriers over the river and used the ones you build with the chains and stuff to mask it, or does the custom chain stuff acctually keep the bears inside the habitat without any other barriers?
