social media has definitely thinned the veil. it has benefits and costs that won't be fully understood for decades. I work for an ad agency and create content professionally (and I'm a musician/camera-human like you), so I see both sides of the capitalist system. my company pays creators for ads, and i get paid by those same companies to make videos. seeing people attach dollar amounts to view counts is wild from this side, and it's just another day at the office on the day job side. your thought about editing out the imperfections is a very salient one. I have to do it for my scripted series on here but it's exhausting. I know for a fact that it results in more views and engagement, but at what cost? i just wanna talk sometimes. we're 100% being pimped out before monetization. it's highly unfair. the 45% cut is not ok either but we tolerate it. you're on the money and these are the reasons why we burn out.
6:19 I hit 1000 subs only once YT shorts started competing with TikTok but it's so hard now to get watch hours because those that find you through shorts tend to not watch your longer than a minute videos, and they don't even show your content to your own subscribers anymore making it almost impossible...
17:32 I literally thought that, I had to leave Facebook because it is even more impossible than RUclips to make it, I thought my content had to be garbage because no matter what I do I couldn't get it to grow until I took the same content from RUclips over to TikTok and many people engaged with it, the same exact videos... You are so on point in this video. We are definitely being pimped out by social media and I'm starting to think that was the point all along. Why else would they create these platforms.I know this is going to sound crazy but another issue I have with social media is that when people post their creativity and artwork on any of these social media platforms, it's forever there in the internet universe. Even if you were to delete those images, we all know that it's never really deleted. So who has control of those images and what are they doing with them. I believe it's being stolen and used by the wealthy. I saw a young lady's youtube video a couple of months ago where she designed her own crochet patterns and ended up seeing her creations on a big fashion designers website, but she's just a small youtube creator, what can she do. And don't get me started on the Kardashians, who have blantantly stolen clothing designs from lesser known fashion designers. This really angers me the most. You know that people are just trying to escape the rat race of needing to have these mundane jobs that aren't fulfilling nor profitable, only to be used and exploited. It's infuriating! Plantation indeed!

I’m an artist as well. And this is so timely. Art is a slow process…it’s an experience. The fast consumption of art…as content…feels a bit…unsatisfying at times. Plus the pace as which creation happens is much slower than an algorithm. So many thoughts here. I saw one of those randomass community posts on my feed from a large channel i dont follow and it was a quiz asking "what is the correct way to edit videos?" And it just set me off. Like isnt this supposed to be art? Arent my videos supposed to be an expression of my personality? How could there be a right way and wrong way to do this? However i choose to make and edit my videos is the correct way. But you nailed it - its so easy to fall into a pattern of pleasing our robot overlords because thats what they deem "successful". Six ads 30:41 so far. My wish is that you are making some of this money they are making off your creativity. And it’s spot on with your conversation. Yesterday I found myself thinking that I cry so often in my videos that it must be a turn off to people. That is the voice of male patriarchy within me and society where having emotions other than anger or rage is supposed to be shameful. I cry easily now because my heart is more accessible to feel than I ever was able to give myself permission. I was conditioned to feel shame at crying in front of someone, not able to “control” my emotions so who I am now has had to evolve many times over. And yes once they discovered how to make MORE and MORE money from other people’s labor (Amazon taught them a lot) AND pay all concerned the minimum possible we got into another slave labor situation. I was qualified for monetization and then RUclips changed the rules of the game. I stick with what is authentically me and what I authentically want to share. If there’s money in that (there hasn’t been so far) great if not I followed my guidance. I’ve also followed guidance to eliminate social media and done that too.

I cry easily now because my heart is more accessible to feel than I ever was able to give myself permission. I was conditioned to feel shame at crying in front of someone, not able to “control” my emotions so who I am now has had to evolve many times over.
And yes once they discovered how to make MORE and MORE money from other people’s labor (Amazon taught them a lot) AND pay all concerned the minimum possible we got into another slave labor situation. I was qualified for monetization and then RUclips changed the rules of the game. I stick with what is authentically me and what I authentically want to share. If there’s money in that (there hasn’t been so far) great if not I followed my guidance. I’ve also followed guidance to eliminate social media and done that too.
