I agree with you about meta-currency. That gives a choice to a player, but it's a bad choice: between boring run here with saving currency and boring run in the future if you've spent the currency. About this game - it really need more actions for the player. Maybe, automatically recharge the attack, or give a bonus for multiple balls.
to this day, my favorite brick breaker is Jardinain (name in french combinationof Garden and Gnome). It's a classic brick breaker with the added twist that garden gnomes will spawn on blocks and try to throw flower pots at you. if you get hit, you loose points and are stunned for a second. If you manage to break the brick on which a gnome is standing on, it will fall. You can juggle freefalling gnomes for extra points. It was a blast.
someone like you = someone with a big audience, capable of spreading the knowledge about those games and hopefully convincing many people to try those demos out
I loved the blackberry brick breaker game so much and I’m so happy I found a replica of the game on the App Store. It’s called classic brickbreaker and is exactly the same as the one on the blackberry
Agreed, neat idea but needs more umpf and mechanics... I mean, where were the ship augmentations? My favourite brickslayer was Richochet Infinity due to mounts of custom levels and the ability to call back and thereby steer the projectile(s). Now, turn the bricks into factions, the ship into a pingpong bat, lay it flat or amp the mining up or turn it into an RPG light Yoku's Island? Would the currently quite popular tile addition (Carcassonne, Make way, Hexguardian...) work? And where are the shuffle board or airhockey rogueys?;o) Cheers
I'm a game developer and I love listening to player's opinions. I really find your comments valuable and agree with those opinions. They make a lots of sense. I just never really thought about progression in that way so it makes me happy that I intuitively did it right (I mean - having a currency that is only usable outside a run).
I remembered another brickbreaker roguelike i saw some time ago, so i looked into it. I think it was Brick Odyssey, but there's also apparently a third option in Roguebreaker.
Think they coul've done more with the metaprogression. Things like bat size. sticky bat (so it sticks to it and you can move and fire it), Dual bats (Vertical or horizontal) and then for the ball, ghosting (passing through 1 row of bricks after a launch which would combo with a sticky bat, exploding ball which takes out bricks in an area, strong ball, piercing ball, multiball etc. And tehse could be unlocked through a metaprogression system and then be drops or upgrades during the levels. And maybe even things like side flippers (as the ones from Pinball) you could operate with another key. Lots of fun things you could do with the concept.
Played a lot of these back in the day. Had both Breakout and Super Breakout on the Atari 2600 game console with the rotating paddle controllers. And I also played Crack Out on the Commodore 64 which was the best Brick breaker I have encountered sofar with lots of different enemies you had to avoid or hit (with one chewing up your ball ans spitting a destroyed one back at you that made you lose a ball) and a whole lot of bat and ball powerups including once that made you bat fire missiles or bullets to get rid of enemies. It was a brilliant game. :)
They need to add like a toggle shield mode to your platform that makes it more narrow and slower but lets you block projectiles or something Edit: Could also make it so while in that shield mode you kill your own ball if you touch it and lose 1 hp
Olexa: "there's no way to block the enemy shots.... oh that's lucky that shot hit the block... as I was saying there's no way to block the shots" The Block " what am I just a joke to you?" 😂 fricken love your videos.
Love brickbreaker, back on my parents blackberry! I also love the *idea* of this game. Seems like there's definitely room for improvment before I think it would be fun. More permanent upgrades in run, more ways for the player to do things, diversity, and dealing with projectiles.
I'm going to say that adding defensive blocks is the only way to counter from what I see. Just like how you have to break their blocks to get to the HP bar. Be a little OP if you can just deflect damage so easily
@@jcbuk2usthe idea is that it probably gets hectic later on having to block the shots AND bounce your ball, but having guaranteed damage never feels good, even if you have infinite free healing
I think it would be cute to add an opportunity for player to upgrade a ball after defeating an enemy or to choose a different type of ball. Like for example a burning ball which after hitting a brick creates a small explosion damaging up to 3 bricks. It would be better to have a mechanic like this instead of "spend money to permanently increase a damage by 1" in my opinion. Also game forcing you into the main menu after completing a combat is also a bit annoying
the UI is a bit esoteric but I like everything else, I assume most of the mechanics open up as you unlock stuff and it starts off slow (not always the best idea imo)
The game seems really cool and it's the version of rogue-like brick breaker I've liked most so far with a couple of caveats (most of which you've mentioned): - the graphics are well made but for some reason I find it rather difficult to read - the design decision of taking damage when blocking shots as well as taking damage when not blocking shots is really weird since it makes them insignificant and unable to play around. Either you should have to block them or have to avoid them. - design issues with shared currency during run and for meta unlocks as mentioned by you. - lack of things to do and build towards during combats Still really curious to see where this game will go :o
Another thing I would add to the list is your character model has no role in the actual game, it just displays the knight in the corner and you have to take the game's word that it's your character and he's involved somehow.
i want to enjoy this game a lot it looks charming, gameplay is smooth, has some nice ideas, and the execution isnt even bad its just so boring i was most engaged in the first battle agaisnt the normal boar where you were swarmed and pressured into healing it just felt very boring before and after that not enough player manipulation or any manipulation in general its just brick breaking+i brought some other toys too like you said i wish there was more ball manipulation using the spells to split your ball into two smaller balls or to make it bigger and slower or anything regardinf the ball and the player wouldve sent this game a long way there just isnt enough player interaction or actual gameplay to be exciting
Nice job on your vids. Interested in any deckbuilders. Developers please have jagged pixel art or smoother edges as an option. I am the demographic on this retro look, but I just don't like it.
ive got a soft spot for brick breaker aswell, for the exact same reason except it was my mom's blackberry and also gamehouse games' brick breakers, if anyone knows that
Thanks for unlocking the memory of playing brickbreaker on my dads blackberry. truly a historic event.
dude you just did the same to me thank yoouu!
Really is a good memory
can’t believe we all shared that same experience
Anyone remember the name of it?
Did EVERYONE play Brick Breaker on their dad’s blackberry? I had no idea this was so universal lol
I miss the BlackBerry brock breaker game ever so much! The trackpad was so smooth.

This actually looks really fun; I like how the ball stretches when it bounces.

Hey I played that decades ago but had no clue about name and forgot about it. Thanks!
Oh man that game was great. Unlocked a core memory for me just now. Thanks for the comment!
I just looked this up on steam. It still exists! They rereleased it in 2021!
@@TheBlondeGeniusGaming True, wishlisted it, though I am a bit torn since I may prefer the older style.

the "grian from hermitcraft" joke made me laugh so audibly lol
Spending 5 gems on 2 blocks that may never get hit compared to healing 2 health for free seems like a no brainer.
Unless you notice almost every spawned brick, it was like the enemy targets them first

A treatise on brick breakers, by Olexa.
Olexa: "there's no way to block the enemy shots.... oh that's lucky that shot hit the block... as I was saying there's no way to block the shots"
The Block " what am I just a joke to you?"

Grian Mentioned!!!🎉
This game definitely has the aesthetic and vibe down perfect, it just needs to lean harder into the rpg aspect to really shine
Your accent... It just _does_ something to me 🫠😳
😅
❤❤❤
Gotta bounce that enemy projectile back at them, Olexa! You keep taking damage you don't have to and then ask why...
How? If he touches it with his platform he takes 2 damage instead of 1
Exactly lol. There’s no way to bounce it back. When it hits my paddle I take damage lol
I'm going to say that adding defensive blocks is the only way to counter from what I see.

Wait deadass??? Gooning!

i used to play brick breaker on my moms blackberry, memory unlocked
I need a qix rogue lite, that would be the next weird classic game to rogueify

Probably won't work but what if you smash the projectiles with the side of the bumper
00:05 I wonder how long it takes for someone to rougelikeify tic tac toe
He (enamy) has spells on cool down one of them is health re gen another one is a minion and so on
You need to kill the minions to stop being shot
The Rogueish Hydration Comment, we've seen it all.
I love the way you make your videos. Keep up the good work.

I swear I plaid that brick breaker on the blackberry it was that and the game where you manoeuvre the ball down platforms
Rougeliking Brickbreaker? But you already played ICEwall.
Always a good day when olexa misunderstands/completely misses a mechanic. In this instance being hit by literally every attack that comes his way 😅
You should try brick odyssey, it just got an update
Vid 3 of asking Olexa to play Winter Falling
your attack special did 3 damage to the enemy not 1. all 3 would be 9 damage, not insignificant.
When will there be a my singing monsters game like roguelike??
Still waiting for the inkball roguelike
The excited, open mouth of the "Olexa looks" logo looks like a pacifier. That is all.
