- Giethoorn is one of the top locations of the Netherlands - on par with Amsterdam, Volendam & the Kinderdijk. It became locally famous, especially after 1958, when the Dutch film maker Bert Haanstra made his famous comedy Fanfare there. At the time, in the old part of the village, there were no roads (though a cycling path was eventually added), and all transport was done by water over one of the many canals. The lakes in and around Giethoorn were formed by peat unearthing.
Originally a village of peatdiggers & some farmers by now Giethoorn has developed into a main destination for tourists. That said, tourism has had a relatively small influence on the old traditional town. The village, still only fully accessible by boat, is one of several places commonly known as the Venice of the North or Venice of the Netherlands. According to Wikipedia Giethoorn has over 180 bridges!
As usual, some route information provided.

Hi Wilco,how are you sir?
Ohhh my God... beautiful unpolluted place.. feel good to see it. Thx for the video
acho que vou por um terno de roupa em uma mochila e me mandar pra um lugar assim mesmo pedindo carona aqui ali e sumi no mundo a fora
thanks you very much !
How far is this in amsterdam?
It's like a picture post card or a painting. Oh... I was just about to say, 'Everything seems so clean and tidy' and then I spot all the rubbish dumped at 3:33. Someone always has to spoil perfection (even without the hills ;)) But still, it looks a really nice place. I love all the the little bridges across the canals.
A lot of people seem to remark the tidy'ness of the Netherlands ... so, i'm kinda glad i could show you otherwise LOL! On the other hand - where so very many tourists come together ...
Wow! Wilco what a picturesque area that is. Must be fantastic to travel around by boat and ditch the car (no pun intended) If only Holland had a few more hills I think the place would be perfect. Take care and safe journey on Friday. Mick.
One week earlier i almost ditched the car [that one of Adelheid] for real Mick! Tell you later about that ... And yes the main imperfection of Holland is the no-hills!
+Wilco de Jonge yes we have hills?! hills of bills!!
my grandad used to live at Giethoorn.. used to go to the floating blues festival. .
já não vou mais
loved it yar it's heaven in the earth
Yes Siva, lush & green with lots of waterways - quite a different world compared with your own home country?
Lovely tour of Giethoorn, Dank u wel.
Thx Peter! Giethoorn is quite lovely with all those canals and little bridges don't you think so?
Wilco de Jonge indeed it is. I've been in love with your country for many years now. I've been to many cities in the Netherlands but never to Giethoorn. I would love to some day. Proost!
