Just watching this video and I used to walk past this lovely building and it is sad to see the state it is ,typical of this so called council to let it go to disrepair as they want to knock it down to build houses and flats, just as they did with the old Riverlie theatre and other places they want gone, look out Kursal, such a shame all our heritage going, maybe someone might come along and save it expecially the Chapel, nobody should destroy that. Blessings.

So I worked here outside over the covid period doing bank work swabbing outpatients for covid for procedures. We had access to one side of the building it had an office in and a room where we put our stuff in with toilets. Always gave me a bit of a weird feeling being there! There’s people who live in there they’re students I think? I knew someone who lived in there. A lot of them would come outside and have a bbq etc.

I lived there as a child, in the White House is where the children lived….but in the 80s they stopped taken children in, they turned the whole place into a old nursing home for the elderly! The times I went to church here! It’s really saddening that it’s all being demolished!

    Absolutely brilliant video of
Such a fabulous and historic building.
    Have visited Nazareth House on
a few occasions over the years and have
attended a service in the chapel and visited
The care home. My daughter and friend's who attended St Bernard’s Convent and my grandchildren visited the elderly residents at
Christmas for Carol Service. It is so sad to see the demise of such a well loved building
which meant so much to many people of Southend. I think they call this progress. I am not so sure. Thankyou for sharing and being so informative. Keep up the good work ☘️☘️☘️

I am glad you enjoyed it I would have loved to have witnessed the Christmas festivities in the Chapel.. even in its dilapidated state it still had character and a comfortable feeling. 😊trying to do update but keeps disappearing.Nazareth House was formerly MILTON HALL built in 1770,it was completed in1794.Held in Norman times 822 and a confirmation carter of Edward the Confessor mentions it.This house is Southend heritage and properties built after 1770 are automatically listed so I believe this is a listed building. In the crypt or under the crypt lie the remains of Mr Clement Scott and Bishop Bellard(a war Army Chaplain) so to my mind they cannot pull this building down.😢 I am contacting Heritage England for further guidance,I have also contacted the Sisters of Nazareth but received a closed reply similar to that of the Council, hmm I wonder.😮

    • @01chittock
      @01chittock 7 месяцев назад +1

The chapel was listed!!! I don’t understand how they got the go ahead to pull it all down? I lived there in the 70s and 80s. And I think all remains were removed from the crypt back in the late 70s early 80s! I remember the crane removing such a coffin, which was made from led, and laid to rest in the graveyard that’s there! I wonder if that’s going to be moved?

So I never did escape, all gates were locked, so much I could say about the place ..none very nice maybe if someone is interested I would be will to tell more......thankyou Martin for interesting video

I studied Latin in Nazareth House in the early 1960s.
After lessons we would go to the chapel, pray, then finish with tea and biscuits with the nuns. When it was complete, the chapel was stunningly beautiful and was an extremely peaceful place. It’s sad to see it run down.
The place was an orphanage at that time, and I became friends with two brothers (Charlie and Freddie) who lived there.
It seems like it was only yesterday.
      Great film.
