the wedding at canae is the most underrated piece in the louvre, mona lisa stands in its shadow, and rightly so. The biggest thing about mona lisa is the hype, and it takes away from it. I loved being the only one looking in awe at this one while everyone else saw the corner of the frame of ML through all the digital cameras raised.
I had the same experience, I was with a friend and we were the only ones looking at this painting in a room of some two hundred people, most of whom were looking at the Mona Lisa
As kid I remembered being bored by the mona lisa and amazed by this painting.Today it would be the opposite, but still it's amazing to learn about this painting on this video.
So ironic when I saw this... Everyone cluttered around a relatively small Mona Lisa and almost ignoring that 1.5ton painting on the other side of the room 🤯 I remember being the only person in the large crowded room paying attention to it
I went to see it too and it’s was so cool!! it was only me and some tour group that was huddled around this painting. Everyone walked by it and walked straight to Mona Lisa.
I've done it. I was in that very room with a couple dozen people, maybe 500 in the entire museum total, with many tour guides. It was an amazing experience. I hope you have the chance to be part of a group that can rent the museum as a venue (as was the case with me), It was an amazing experience.
The painting was not "taken" or "acquired", but looted. The louvre still retains hundreds of Italian works of art stolen during Napoleon's campaigns. They never returned home.
this the only informative host that i watched he explain facts about the museum when no one his sorroundings not crowded😅 satisfying feeling to be the only one who visit in that museum😂 no noise or pic sounds just admired the moment of the soul of paintings😅
thank you for the video, enjoyed very much learning about this painting; speaking in modern-day lingo such as: the dude in the middle, when for those times those people found success & good living in a Christian-centered culture... a little distracting to hey-haw those people's beliefs & expressions of their times, but very modern I suppose to speak that way. Would love more cultural details... oh, & even the great Homer whose work has survived generations & generations & generations, was commenting on earlier times & expressing the themes in his current milieu...
2:55 "You can't undo" Baumgartner Restoration would disagree! I would love to see him clean up the Mona Lisa, you've got to admit the old gal could do with a bit of a wash!
If the reproduction is visually identical and we only ever interact with our eyes, then to me it's the same thing. If you bring human greed and the desire to possess stuff and hoard things of value, then it's not the same, but to me this detracts from the value. Part of the value of this art, and many others is it's history. The story behind the art is often just as interesting as the art itself. It tells us about people in the past. How they saw art, was it just a commodity? Was it a way to move money around? Did people want it for it's aesthetic beauty? Should art be shut away or should it be available to all?
Too bad more screen time wasn't spent on viewing the full image of the painting rather than people talking about it , while it was off camera or walking around near by it but not being able to see the full image
I swear that all of the things you saw in this video aren't that beautiful irl, everything can look much better virtually. BTW, last time I was there, all the tourists (mostly asian people) were watching this big painting and none was giving any attention the Mona Lisa.
well, you commented about lots of Japanese enjoying western art, didn't know what you were saying, don't like them? too many people there? just interesting tidbit? that it seemed strange so many looking at the big one? just wanted to know more... sorry, maybe you are right, no point, just telling the facts, right/ :)
Susan McDonald oh sorry I didn't understand it that way. In the room where there's mona lisa there's another huge painting on the opposite wall, "Les noces de Cana", and usually you can't see her unless you get very close to her bc there's a big crowd, but once everyone was watching the other one, no one was paying attention to mona lisa, it was funny to see ^^ and mostly asian people bc it's crazy how many asian people visit Paris
I think things look much better in real life. for ex I went to see some palace in google street view where you can walk indoors and was like "meh, who would even bother" and then I went there an I was freaking blown away by what I saw I mean it was so good all the gold and silver and paintings and sculptures and wow.

Tom's strong enough to stand on his own. The unnecessary graphics and background music just distract from his presentation.
Love Tom Scott's work!

The red shirt made it to Google's channel, aye.
Man it'd be great to get into the louvre after hours. that area tom is standing in pretty much constantly packed with hundreds of people.

@kev3d Gosh! How expensive was it to rent the Louvre? Can't have been cheap.
Umm... how did Tom, or the script, get the dimensions of the paining reversed?
Only ad I’ve ever clicked on YT. And only because Tom was in the thumbnail.
When your internet allows you only 144p but it's tom scott so you put it on 1080p
Bartosz Olszewski exactly what I'm doing now
Absolutely Beautiful!

Got recommended to me how did I never know about it? I love toms videos
A lot of visitors actually don't even look at it because they're focusing on the Mona Lisa and forget about the room's other paintings
Fabulous Tom... this is fascinating
nice video, tom scott's awlways interresting !
I want to work at the Louvre.
magnifico! come il dipinto
At times it was not possible to hear Tom. What us the point of making an informative video if you cancel out the speaker with distracting music?
Histoire très captivante et dimensions extrêmement globales!
brilliant
1:47 I'm not sure I agree with the word "reality" in this context. Perhaps "relatability" would fit?
Nill
Yea, and 2:59 "de la façon la plus sûre" should rather be translated as "in the safest manner" or "without risks"
Tom Scott! :-D
3:02 is that Mona Lisa hidden behind Scott's head?
Love the video, anyone know what the opening music is?
sounds a bit like Daft Punk
Theodd1sout talked about this on his channel.
And right next to it, stands the handsome Lisa. NDL for life

the video image is too poor, you need to fix it more
A small painting staring at the largest... sort of ironic there, but I would love to see the Cana painting in person. *sigh No interest in the ML.

So after watching the video, what is Mona Lisa watching?
She's watchin jesus do some sick wine magic tricks
MirroredReality lmao what the 😁
What am I missing here.. How is this painting worth less than Mona Lisa..
The Mona Lisa got so famous mostly by accident tbh
Too bad more screen time wasn't spent on viewing the full image of the painting rather than people talking about it , while it was off camera or walking around near by it but not being able to see the full image

...and your point is?
There's no point, I'm just telling my life. I hope you enjoyed.

@0:35, 6.5 m wide, 10 m high, huh? LOL!
This is infantile. Jesus, when will this garbage stop.
Why can't this guy talk clearly... Likes having a bad cold.
