  • Adam bought a RVF400 Honda. Unfortunately he bought it in bits and over the course of 2 years it's caused him to Break Open Another Thousand on more than one occasion.
But now the bike is at the Obsession Engineering control bunker it's time to dive inside and see how much of a disaster the little Honda really is.
Has his money been well spent.... No is the short answer!

I always put a piece of wood in the calliper to stop the pistons flying out and you can also get them evenly. I much safer way and the pistons don't get damaged either by flying across the floor or hitting you in the nuts.

A less dramatic way of removing stuck pistons is to blank off the hose hole with a suitable size bolt then swap the bleed nipple for a grease nipple and use a grease gun to pump out the pistons I use a g clamp to restrict the one that's moving

You can probably take that exhaust pipe to a paintless dent repair place to get those dents taken out. Should be pretty easily accessible from the muffler end with the muffler removed.

Use the rear brake to hook each caliper up to in turn and pump the pistons out with fluid, wedging them to get them out evenly. Once you've got them almost out they'll pull out with pliers but wrap them in gaffer tape for extra grip and avoid marking. Brake fluid will exert way more force than an air line and shift stuck pistons better.

20 years ago parts were cheap and plentiful, the full real Honda bodywork was £1500, dread to think what official prices are now.
Exhaust were always hard to find due to them being a welded unit.

I suggest not using copper slip on alloy parts, it can cause galling and cold welding of parts especially with dissimilar metals, copper slip is ok on steel only parts. Use something like Permatex aluminum anti seize paste for dissimilar metals and alloy only parts 👍

Make a nice looking heat shield in stainless steel for the exhaust merger where the dent is, weld on a couple of retaining nuts and it will hide the dent👍

I hade one of thse not so long ago, and bike imported from UK. 55bhp on the rear wheel and would do 201 kph. More then enough for the road but to be honest I was a bit disappointed by the whole experience of riding a v4. My plan was to increase the pooooowaaaa :P but money issues forced me to sell her off ;(
Today all I want from a bike is a feather lighte bike with tops 100hp, dont need more than that.

Just get a set of pliers to remove the pistons, flying brake pistons are not good for your health…😉😊

They are awkward to tune, parts are rare and expensive. Most folks around here had zxr/fzr for racing as they would tune easier

Adam also bought a new pair of overalls for this video, they still have the creases in them from when they were on the shelf.

Bizarrely, I've known Dave Hewson for 20 years.
I also met Dave Moss at Willow Springs when racing my girlfriend's R6 there in 2006.
Saved his ass because he had his trailer stolen and the insurance company wouldn't pay out on his big tool cabinet as he didnt have evidence it existed. I just happened to have taken a pic of him working on a set of forks and there sat the tool chests.
      Small world.
