@@tuotykoroky96 The US G&L's are amazing and that's a great price. However, keep in mind that the string spacing on the 5-strings are a bit narrow (17 mm?). I couldn't get along with the narrow spacing on my old 2500. If that spacing works for you though, they play and sound incredible.
G&L JB hands down. I've owned close to 10 basses over the course of 20 years, I have 3 now and they're all G&Ls. They're a real unsung hero in the industry. That being said, I've had the opportunity to have a run of the new Fender American Pros and I must say, they're great. The Precision 5 was definitely the pick of the litter for me. With G&L, you have amazing build quality as well as even better options. With Fender, you have better resale value and the Am Pros definitely come with one bitching travel case. IMO both are legit choices.
I love the Intro! Okay, so I am in the crowd and I can identify myself.... Now, back to the video. THANK YOU Rob and Dave for coming to Minnesota and hanging with us crazies over here.
I was in the market for a Jazz recently. My main bass is a Modulus Q5 but I've been wanting some retro tones. Got me a nice Precision but which Jazz to go for I wondered? Enter the Sire Marcus Miller V7... WOW!! Just Wow!! How they can make such a brilliant bass for so little I don't know but it punches way above its price range. Respect to the Big F and G&L 'n all but the V7 really does it...
For what it's worth, I have owned a G&L 4 string since the mid 90s and a 5 string since the 2000s. I think they are under rated basses that don't have the branding of a Fender nor a Music Man, however I feel they are hidden gems and bit of a connaiseurs choice. If you feel buying a G&L bass, go for the USA ones, not the Indonesian ones. The latter is a good starters choice but leaves you wanting as an experienced player.
Lower the action on the GL and it will sound worse. Today every one has super low action and light strings. Result, crap tone and far too many slappers. Lift the action for better tone.
I picked up a G&L M-2000 w/micro switches (active/passive) and couldn’t put it down! I laid down hard cash and took it home about 3 years ago an zero regrets! Ruby Red Metallic w/matching head stock peg head. Amazing bass with a great contoured body which is great for sitting down and playing comfortably!
I loved that riff Dave played, I would love to hear it drenched in Reverb. I love Fender basses and Fender guitars and I love G&L basses and guitars just a little more than I love Fender and I think its because G&L are basically improved versions of Fenders.
The G&L JB (and JB-2) are terrific basses and a great value for the money. Large variety of tones are available, from deep almost-dub bass rivalling a P bass to a punchy, bright jazz tone. The sustain is unbelievable due to the proprietary G&L bridge. The neck is super-playable (older models have a satin finish). And the instrument is very light, about 6.5 lbs. Not as well-known as some other brands, they are very well made and something of a "well-kept secret" among moderately-priced basses.
Chappers has been listening to his Megadeth latelyit seems, dropping Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson in the same video. Time to go give Rust in Peace another listen. What an amazing album.
I love every brand Leo Fender made. My first guitar was a Mexican Strat and my first bass was an American 72 Musicmaster that had the sweetest neck. I then fell in love with an American Jazz deluxe which was my favorite bass until I bought a 94' Musicman Stingray bass and realized the Musicman Stingray was capable of doing anything you ever want a bass to do. My first Fender guitar that I really loved was an early 90s Japanese Jazzmaster which later was replaced by a 72 thinline telecaster. My dad bought a G&L Legacy that really made me interested in G&L. It had a flatter radius making it easier for bends and I prefer the treble and bass knobs over the 2 tones that only work on 2 of the 3 pickups. I bought a G&L Fallout Tribute last year and loved it. I wanted to try and improve it so I put a Seymour Duncan JB humbucker in the bridge and a Bare Knuckle True Grit P90 neck pickup recently. I upgraded to CTS pots and a switchcraft jack. I also added a Tusq string retainer for the 3rd and 4th string and replaced the stock one with a Tusq retainer and switched out the nut for a Bone nut. All in it cost me under $600 and it's my favorite guitar right now. I bought the Fallout for $350 on Reverb, the pickups cost me about $150 for both on Reverb. The Tusq trees were 12 bucks and the nut was $8. The pots and jack were about $20 combined. I love G&L guitars, my next guitar will be a ASAT Special Tribute. They do such a good job on the Tributes and I like to mod my guitars so the G&L Tributes are perfect for me. I never had the balls to mess with my American Fenders or Musicman, the fear of devaluing them is too great. I love Fenders but I actually prefer G&L guitars over Fenders for reasons already stated.
A&Bing a fender and g&l jazzers I was shocked at the upgraded feel in build quality that the g&l had. I live in NY and I'm shocked at the price differential. Where I am g&l usa jb generally is a bit cheaper priced. What is the problem Minnesota?
I think the JB they demo'd was not bone stock so that would explain the difference in price. I believe things mentioned like a gloss finish on the neck, different neck size, and nitro finish on the body would cost extra.
It's kind of funny because I think that a P-Bass plucking over the fretboard and foam at the bridge (aka James Jameson style) fits in better with Jazz than a Jazz Bass does
Dear Mr. Chapman, I am interested into buying a Chapman guitar, but I like to play on a thin C-shape neck. Which Chapman guitar(s) should I take a look at? Cheers!
chappers - i'd actually suggest you spend some time figuring your way around the bass, not saying you necessarily need it but it's really helpful to your rhythm skillz. thanks for the vid, always love to see anything to do with G&L
I started playing bass first and when I started playing guitar I realized how much more theory I knew than so many guitar players. Bass players master modes and most guitar players are only familiar with Ionian and Aeolian. Most of them just play Pentatonic scales muting notes and wiggling their fingers fast. You always know a good guitar player when hes got the balls to play slow enough so that you can hear the notes ring out. The rhythm training is also important. You write better guitar riffs when you understand the bass, not just the rhythm/groove aspect but the melody and harmony between bass and guitar. I would also say bass players should learn to play guitar to some extent for the same reasons, when a bass supports rhythm, adds melody and harmonizes with guitar, it's at it's best.
Yeah, the G&L definitely sounds better. It has more clarity and also more low end punch. Obviously the Fender is a GREAT bass, but I feel like G&L is under appreciated. This video and many others might actually make me start buy G&L over Fenders because they’re better quality.
So I'm thinking Rob's never played a bass before "properly"? That's interesting and unexpected. I'm primarily a guitar player and got a few gigs as a bassist on my CV. It's a good skill to have and it widens your perspective a bit. I believe every guitar player should learn the basics of how to play bass, locking in with your drummer, etc.

When they said dark glass head and cabs , you just know your not going to get a true representation of the bass playing, as you will be saying it's because the got fantastic top amplification, a broom handle with elastic bands will sound good running through it.
great video guys! the Jazz bass is the best ever !...for any style rock, jazz, blues, metal , there is none higher ! I have both the basses demo'd here ,both great basses . One not better than the other IMO . Dave rules.
sorry one more comment. Well.To me I feel G&L is what Fender would most likely be if Mr. Fender had stayed with the company at least mostly. have to give all at G&L there dues of course.
I cannot believe that this is quite literally the ONLY G&L JB vs Fender Jazz video on RUclips.
The answer is G&L.
You're welcome.
Aye. My JB is by far the most amazing bass that I've played in 40 years.
@@jasoncass8771 Hi. I am planning to buy G&L bass second hand 5 string. I think it is JB. Do you recommend it? It cost around 1000 dolllar.

Love me some G&L!
Digging the Daveformation on the G&L bass. I feel more Daveformed so I can make a better decision

The G&L is available in different neck profiles, AND with satin finish on back.
I have an early G&L 5 string (not the rare 4 sting next with the 5th squeezed it) EMG pick ups, it’s amazing.
Great comparison video! Great play and great sound! That 4x10 Darkglass cabinet sure looks HOT!

You should have Dave do a video with the Reverend basses. I went to Riff City for the first time a few weeks ago and feel in heart with those.
Have you ever compared the G&L jazz to the Marcus Miller Jazz bass?
holy hell that bit at 11:57 was probably the best 40 seconds of my life

ewetoo SB1 would kill a precison. A better comparison is the LB vs precision
yay :D
It'd be interesting to explain the difference anyway!

G&L wins the bottle opener / headstock would be very useful

Chappers playing bass! Does it Djent though?!

hi.., the g&L is Amazing..! can I know the exact model of the G&L and color?
G&L destroys Fender (granted Im biased because I dont like Fender at all) I played a few of the G&L PJ basses and absolutley loved them
Any word of the new MLB-1? I finally scraped the cash together for one, but they're all gone.
My beef with nitro finishes is that if you just look at it sideways it will scratch......😟
It's kind of funny because I think that a P-Bass plucking over the fretboard and foam at the bridge (aka James Jameson style) fits in better with Jazz than a Jazz Bass does
Dave needs his own musicism. He will be a great teacher.
My personal list of favouritem usic Daves:

Give Dave the bass Uncle Riff!
both basses as good as eachother i rekon, love the red dwarf sound, way better than the dodgy bass tone we get on our songs. well done.
Rob any chance dorje would perform at malta anytime soon?
Naim Spiteri Yeah we'd love to :-)
Australia???
Rochdale?
So glad you chose Minnesota, great state!
Chapers dont u deal with andertons any ?
The Fender J, they play like butter. If they are good enough for Marcus Miller and Jaco, they are good enough for most mortals.

G & L all day. Leo perfected his creation. But, why not have both. A G&L and a Squier. Hahahaha. Fender USA are just to expensive.
