James Worthy once said that when you played Michael Jordan he makes you looked slow and when you played Larry Bird he makes you looked stupid.
Guess its hard to love/like a guy that makes you look stupid.
Only way anyone should/would/could REALLY "hate" Larry Bird is/was if he said something about "Yo Momma" or some personal shit like that. Maybe also lose $10K (or more) on a vegas bet against him (&/or the Celtics) Other than that, player/coach/fan/whoever, had to ADMIRE Larry Bird's game.

Funny how when you were a fan of a team, you hated the players on the team that was their bitterest rival; but years later after they've all retired, you wake up one day and realize that you have such great respect for the players of the rival team!
Respect to James Worthy. He was a worthy competitor!
I'm a generation of the 80s and hated everyone but my team. Now I would take anyone of them over the league that exists today.
I think it’s called maturity and getting older and appreciating the finer things in life. Peace out bro!
Absolutely hated Bird......because he didn't play for my Blazers.
@@edwardsisson3580 That's funny!
That was the old days . The last 20 years is a joke
As a Laker fan I hated Bird from ‘79 -‘91. I knew he and Magic developed a great friendship halfway through their career but the day my feelings changed for Bird was the day Magic retired in ‘91 and there was footage of Bird walking out of the middle of the Celtics practice saying this was the only day in his life he didn’t feel like playing basketball.
I'm a lifelong Lakers fan and I remember those days. The guy I hated the most was Danny Ainge. He was the king of flopping before Vlade came into the game. He also would cause all sorts of trouble and someone from the other team had enough and bopped Ainge, he cry like the little baby that he was. "Waah !Who me?"
I am a life long Celtics fan, born and raised in Boston and I was the exact opposite, hated Magic lol. When the story came out about them shooting the commercial and Larry's mom making them lunch it changed my opinion. It's funny as fans you hated the other team because of how good they were, respected them but man the passion. We were lucky enough to see the greatest basketball teams go head to head though!
Cs fan and I never hated Magic. Who the hell can hate Magic? He put fear into me, but isn't that what made the games mean something special?
Magic Johnson was Larry Bird's Mother's favorite collegiate basketball player....I remember reading this in Jr High when they were both rookies in the NBA....
@@zeppelinmexicano correct best point guard to ever play the game....
Ice was a great individual scorer, but... Saw many a game where he got his 30 or 40 and the Spurs lost by 20. Bird could score 15 on an off night and carry the Celtics to a win with rebounds and assists.
Bird was a great individual scorer too, and he could have scored many more points, but his game was mutli-dimensional. The bird would be great without scoring.
Spurs didn't have the pieces that the Celtics had. Plus, they never had a decent coach until Pop.
@@jamesspalten5977 I disagree. Admittedly, George Gervin was a great scorer. But he never won a championship. Not in high school. Not in college. Not in the professional leagues. The truly great players -like Magic, Bird, Jordan and Lebron- win titles. George never did.
@@1994g0 I love ice. Most beautiful basketball player I have ever seen. But his defense was very poor. Not average or subpar, poor. Now he could score from anywhere in as many ways as anyone I've ever seen. He was a decent passer and rebounder. But he contributed very little on defense. He could get an occasional steal or block a shot but guys who would score 10 to 12 points a game could easily get 18 to 20 off of him.

Same here! I was 14 when Larry joined the Celtics but my all-time favorite was DJ! They worked so great together and just like Magic and Worthy these 2 teams saved the NBA and handed it off to Michael who then took it to the next level as well. In my opinion you will never see such great basketball as with those two eras.

I think just 80's ball in general was da shit!
That was the golden era of basketball.
I'm a Laker fan and Bird is on my NBA Mount Rushmore
I am a Celtics fan, but the Lakers were stacked. Larry was incredible, and on my Mt Rushmore as well.I had a hard time picking a "star" of the Lakers. Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Scott, etc... Epic games, and massive respect. I loved watching the Celtics vs the Lakers. You could not pick a winner before the game. No way.

As a Sixers fan growing up in the 80s I can definitely attest to Bird's greatness. I hated the guy as a player, but that hate stemmed from the number of times he would just cut our hearts out. You could be playing perfect defense on him and he would just hit a jumper right in your face, and he could rebound, he could pass. He just killed you in so many ways. Growing up back then I just despised the Celtics, but you had to appreciate Bird's greatness.

There's only one player who I've seen interviewed that still hates Bird and that is Laimbeer. Their hatetred for one another goes very deep. Everyone one else, white, black, or brown, absolutely admires him. Remember Rodman with his famous quote about Bird being just average if he was born black? He too regrets that quote and now has nothing but admiration. They admire how he handled himself, how he played the game and his absolute greatness. And he is universally admired by coaches too. You don't see that from anyone else who has played the game. Pure GOAT. Anyone who thinks differently has an absolute bias but that's their problem.
Larry did it all and made the team better. That to me was his greatest skill, making others play better.
I say the same about Magic, my GOAT.

Hey James, as a Celtics fan since 75 I will say that there are two players I feared the most. One of them was Andrew Toney, and the other one was you, James. You seemed to just glide and score at will. You killed me.
In retrospect, from this fan’s perspective, it was a helluva lotta fun. It really was. I imagine many Lakers fans from that era would agree. That, that was the best that great NBA rivalry ever. Granted there are some good ones now, and others fade away, but that Lakers/Celtic one in the 80's was the best, most evenly matched of them all…so far anyways.

Bird’s mind games worked like a charm
If Larry Bird wrote a book about all the trash he talked on the basketball court and backed up, it would be a bestseller.
Worthy was unreal, the perfect compliment to Magic. He could fill the lane like no one else could and he was so smooth at laying the ball in or dunking the basketball. He always finished the play and often got fouled. He was extremely fast and especially quick for his size and he was an outstanding defensive player. He also was an excellent post player in the half court set, he was very unique in the way that he posted people up. (He would give McCale fits. He would hold the ball down low, often with one hand....and just hold the ball for several seconds, not doing anything. But, what he was doing was sizing up his opposition. Then, quick as a cat, he'd drop step, and most of the time he was too quick for the defender and lay in the ball with a mini-finger roll or a quick dunk. The defender was often left flat footed because Worthy was EXTREMELY quick. While James was an outstanding finisher and a great post player, he wasn't much of a shooter until late in his career (like Magic). Almost all of his damage was done within 4 feet of the basket. Unfortunately James had bad knees and he didn't have a long career but he was among the best to ever play the game when he was at his peak. He was a key player in the Lakers success in the mid-late 80s. It's a shame that all those great players had medical problems that shortened their careers. Magic had Aids, Bird had a bad back and Worthy had bad knees. Worthy easily could have averaged 25+ ppg but he played on a team with lots of stars and he didn't mind sharing the spotlight. But, during their peak, they took a back seat to no one, not even Jordan.
@Tom Romeo, Jr., even an unhealthy and in constant severe pain Larry Bird, with the structual stability of his back deteriorating and in near collapse was still the best player in the league, bar none. Bird's skill set was on par with any of the all-time greats, and his basketball IQ was second to none. But the two combined were proof that even the best athletes of the day that played against him in the league couldn't stop a slow, no-jumping, white boy from rural Indiana from being as clutch a player with the game on the line as has ever played. I think it's ironic that no one sang the praises of Larry Bird's greatness any louder than his life long competitor, Magic Johnson of the Lakers. There's no doubt that James Worthy played great, but Larry Bird was a great player. A big difference and a lot of real estate separating the definitions of those two descriptors. It was James Worthy, also a Laker, who was once quoted as saying, "Michael Jordan makes you look slow. Larry Bird makes you look stupid." And I believe it was former Laker Coach, Pat Riley, who was once quoted as saying, "if I had to pick a player to take a shot to save the game I'd pick Michael Jordan." "But if I had to pick a player to take a shot to save my life I'd pick Larry Bird." Only three players in the league's history have been named league MVP three years in a row. Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, & Larry Bird.
In 1984 they DID take a back seat to the World Champion Celtics. Now of course from 82-86 it was an almost certainty the Championship game would be LA vs Boston. And we all loved it, whether or not you hated one team at the time ( I always did not like the Lakers cause of the NCAA matchup MI state vs Indiana St). Indiana state has never before been in a title game and will likely never return there. It was solely due to Bird. Oh yea I too am from Indiana. And though I was not in Bird airspace of talent I did grow up loving and playing B-ball all winter. In those days winter lasted from mid Nov to late March.

The 1980's were the greatest of times for the NBA. My Milwaukee Bucks with Coach Nellie and Sidney Moncrief and Marques Johnson and Bob Lanier had some super teams but could never get past the Sixers and Celtics both in the same postseason. We'd beat Philly then lose to Boston; or we'd beat Boston but lose to Philly. We did that like five times! Still makes me wanna cry.

He's only the first pick overall, no big deal. But Worthy is a smart and humble man, as he quickly learned in college when playing with Jordan, that with all his talent he was better suited as a super second. That made him an exellent fit for the star studded Lakers. He must have put his ego aside, which is no easy thing to do for a super star, and this attitude brought him many championships. He is in Jordan's top 5 picks.
James worthy had pointy ass sharp elbows wich is fine unless everyone finds out that fact and realise noone ever should know this.
Larry Bird played after spending the night in traction.. Larry Bird would play with a dislocated L1 and a fractured cheek bone, But players today will sit out because their thumb hurts or their knee hurts..

Valentine's day, 1987, Celtics versus Lakers at The Forum. A dream come true for me as a Laker fan to finally attend a home game instead of being at the Oakland Arena, Warriors. James Worthy was on Larry like flies on doodoo. Larry shot his famous fade away and James almost tipped it. It was nothing but net. Best shot I had ever seen.
I bleed Showtime Lakers, so my favorite Larry Bird moments were when he and the Celtics lost to the Lakers! There was one particular moment when the Celtics lost to the Lakers, and Bird admitted during a press conference that Magic was the best! That was rather satisfying!
With that said, I have Larry Bird as my starting Small Forward in the All Time Team! I may have some lingering “hate” for Bird, but I respect the hell out of him! ☮️🖖🏽
It's etched in my mind the incredible quickness and footwork of Worthy. Here';s this enormously tall man who could move like a 6foot guard
Anyone who picks Gervin to start over Bird has a serious agenda.
Larry Bird's body was not fast, but his mind and hand/eye coordination was quick enough to make a play faster than his competition could react to in time.
Bird's anticipation and reaction was faster than everyone in the NBA. He's like a faster computer
U said that perfectly & correctly.
He could also run for days and jogged about 2 hours a day, even on game days. He NEVER got tired. He may not have looked like much, but he may have had the highest level of cardiovascular fitness in the league. He wore everybody out and played hard right until the last second of the game.
He would be really stupid to start Gervin over Bird. No comparison.
Glad to see Larry getting the acknowledgment & respect he deserves

True… it was so satisfying. Like finally somebody showing some guts! Remember game 3 the lakers raped the Celtics, the entire country was calling boston sissies and the championship for the lakers was just a matter of time. Larry had to call out his team in public and damn it did it work.
Yea that play was a series changer. I was in the rafters at the Forum watching that game. The Lakers got suckered into playing Boston's game and it killed them. HOWEVER what people ALWAYS forget was game #2- the Lakers lead the series 1-0 and they are ahead,
and they have the ball. James throws an errant pass and Gerald Henderson steals it and goes in for the bucket. Then Magic forgets how much time is on the clock. If the Lakers win that one its 2-0 going back to LA and its a totally different series. Boston psychologically beat the Lakers. In all those years I still say the '84 Lakers team was the best.

My favorite Larry vs. The Lakers moment? Easy. The Lakers blow them out by 33 in 1984 Game 3, in The Forum. In the postgame interview, they ask Larry his thoughts.
"Well, we just played like a bunch of old women tonight. ... We've got some great players on this team, but we don't have the players with the heart, sometimes, that we need. And today, when you see Magic slapping high-fives, and guys [passing] behind their backs, and shooting lay-ups on us all day long, you'd think that something, SOMEONE, would try to put a stop to it, and, until we get our hearts where they belong, well ... we're in trouble."
For anyone who thinks this is arrogant superstar behavior, throwing his team under the bus, the Boston Globe headline screamed the next morning, "BIRD RIPS SELF, TEAMMATES", because he was even more acidically brutal on himself, going so far, if I remember right, to refer to himself as a 'sissy'. At this point, everyone's eyes were about as wide as dinner plates.
Every basketball fan in the world should then watch the greatest NBA game ever played, Game 4 of the 1984 NBA World Championship, played in The Forum in Los Angeles, California, in its entirety.
I'm sure Larry bird is losing sleep over what worthy thinks about him.

Much respect to the Celtics and Laker teams back then! I was a Celtics fan but the Lakers from that era were legends!
You got that right.
I give the Lakers props for the 85 series but to say The 87 series was a mismatch would be an understatement. Many people forget The West was not that competitive in the 80s so the Lakers would often benefit from teams in the east duking it out and having nothing left by the finals. The 87 and 88 Laker teams definitely benefited from plain cripple teams. Boston was completely decimated by the 80s and finals and Detroit had their star Isiah Injured and pretty much useless by game seven of the 88 finals. I would say Boston in LA we pretty much even through 86 and then when it all went downhill for the Celtics with the death len bias

The only time the word 'hate appears' on this page is in your very misleading title - and in one other comment, also criticising your title.
Bird mastered the game very early. He had to make up challenges for himself to keep himself from being bored. He would shoot with only his off hand for games and still lead in scoring. He would make friendly wagers about taking HORSE-type of shots in games and make them. He would tell his defender the inbound play and give defensive options before it happened, even game ending plays, WTF? He would set up McHale to break the Celtics scoring record only to motivate himself to break McHale's record the next game. He demanded to take every last shot and made nearly everyone of them. He didn't want to play decoy like MJ and took shots, double or triple teamed. No player that has or will walk this Earth would even think about doing those things. He was unshakably confident in his talent and ability. The man is beyond GOAT, he is god.
When I was in college, in the 80's, I worked part time in a store like Home Depot. Me and the janitor were Celtic fans and a couple guys in the warehouse liked the Lakers. We had so much fun talking crap to each other over those games. I miss those times.
It seems to me that trash talking in previous generations was more subtle, and was meant for the opponent, and not for the whole crowd to see and hear. Now modern players want everyone to see and hear their taunting and trash talking. The thing I don't like is that random nobody players will trash talk like they are someone special. This goes for all sports, not just basketball.
I am truly a fan of all of you who played BACK IN THE DAY. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!
I got every Showtime Lakers broadcast in the 80's here in Central California. James Worthy often had the assignment of guarding The Bird. Worthy actually played pretty good defense against Larry. But when Larry was intent on getting a basket, Larry was gonna burn James. Just like he did everyone else.

Sorry, but as a defender I thought Worthy was highly lacking, and he couldn’t rebound to save his life.
I can understand when you have a bitter rival like Bird you might not ever completely get over it but that’s the only reason he chose Gervin over Larry and that’s completely fine. Bill Laimbeer was no Bird or Iceman but he was highly underrated. He played the game rough but so did Rick Mahorn and he gets plenty of respect because his off court personality was nice. Worthy was just pissed that Bird was a better player.
I loved it grew up in the 80.s and it was the best basketball ever
Respect to Worthy. An underrated great on the most stacked team ever. Bird is the best, all time fantasy draft he’s #1 pick.
Lifelong Laker fan (and I mean back to Jerry and Wilt). I even lived in Boston during the 80's. But Bird would be in my all time starting 5.
He was a stone cold killer
Worthy was great!
Bird vs Worthy a war, is two of my favorites.
Dick Stockton said of James Worrhy during the 1987 finals against Boston, " the 3 gifts he has;the catch;the postup move;and a quick first step.
You had to be gifted indeed to catch a fast ball from Earvin Johnson.
Some coach said "If I had to choose a player to take the shot to win a game I'd choose Jordan. To save my life I'd choose Bird"
Some Coach? You mean Pat Riely.
Bird was twice the player worthy was
I'll only believe that exaggeration if you show me the stats?
How about, Worthy a top 10 player and be done with it?
@@thomaswilson7538 you saying Worthy top 10 or being sarcastic
@@makembounce69 it sounds like he’s being sarcastic. I don’t think he’s that stupid
@@thomaswilson7538
NO way Worthy top 10 !
He was Great , a little
overshadowed as well ,
but not top 10 ! I have
Worthy # 17 , just behind
LeBron James at # 16 !
@@cazu2479 don't ever underestimate stupidity with people 🤣
Larry legend could back up his trash talk with reality. That’s why he’s a legend.
To be honest I think more people remember Larry Bird today than they do James Worthy. I think that’s why he’s mad.
A good interview, but that didn't sound like "hate" to me. It sounded like good natured trash talk of the same nature as Bird.
One of the favorites was when Magic got a rebound, got confused, and put the ball in the Celtics basket! The next was watching Kareem having to breath from a tank of oxygen when the Garden was about 100 degrees!
The games those 2 teams ahd always brought both cities to a standstill, they were that good.
Zero hate in that. All respect.
You would have to hate someone that made you look stupid.
Many of us who grew up with Dr. J, Bird/Magic and then Jordan were completely spoiled. Now we're the cranky old guys who say, "Jordan would be averaging 50 today, at least 50!"
I'm a LAKERS fan and James...as Marvin Gaye said, "only love conquers hate" and hate is a wasted emotion.
I used to hate Larry Bird (I'm a Lakers fan) just as I hate Barry Sanders (I'm a Packer fan) back then because they were EXCELLENT PLAYERS.
