Thanks Pat. That’s much appreciated. I’ll get one ordered up. And I’ve followed your bimmercode video. Ordered up my Bluetooth connector and hoping I can get my wing mirrors to close with the fob and tyre temperature measurements too. Aren’t i8s just the best?
Im used to work mostly on older cars from 00 and older. And now comes this i8 owner and wants me to be his Personal Mechanic and Detailer. Im glad to see that they are not that Hard to get access to maintanance Part! It sounds silly, but im used to work on almost "empty" cars, which means, no Covers, mostly no Electronics and a lot of space for your hands. Happy to found your channel!
Thank you for the message. I started working on cars back with my 1978 corvette. Such a huge difference between then and now! I'm glad my videos can be useful.
Hi Pat, great video! Well laid out and thorough. You are a natural for this! I like the reset instructions at the end as well - super helpful. Best i8 oil change video out there :) That wasn't crazy at all! I don't think there is really a way to measure the oil level on the i8... I think it will just tell you that it is OK. The BMW Connected app has an "INFO" section that will give you a go-nogo for oil and tire pressure. For the rubber washers, I like to use a dab of silicone grease instead of oil... I think it makes them much easier to get off next time - just a personal thing. Also, next time you might want to fill the oil filter cup about 1/2 way before installing to reduce the time the engine is running dry on the first startup, but that is just a paranoia thing ;) Franny
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words. I wasn't going to initially record this process but it was quite a learning experience and I had some time to get it done. For measuring the oil, there's a method in the iDrive, but you have to have the engine warm, first. I wanted to add that to the video, but I'm not driving while my newly paved driveway is curing, so I decided to punt and just upload. I might do a quick post for that. You know, I'm always a stickler about filling the oil filter with oil if it's a vertical install to get oil to the engine parts quicker, but for some reason, I didn't do it with this during the two times I did an oil change. I think I felt I would end up wearing it, ha! Good tip on the silicone! I should give that a try next time. My dad always used the used oil so I continue to do so.
Thank you! My mileage is so low that I might not be able to get a transmission fluid change video for many years. But I will try to record my maintenance as I perform it.
friend of mine i8 crashed...and after that i couldn't turn it on anymore...stop that when it crashed it activated some system that turns off the electrical part...do you know how I can solve it ???
Gr8 vid.can you make a vid on how to recone the exhaust speaker? And one question...if the motor for some reason started missing would you hear it ?or do the exhaust speakers just keep playing an in tune motor sound?
That's a good deal if the car isn't in need of mechanical or electrical repairs. I suggest that anyone who buys an i8 out of warranty has at least $10k cash on hand for repairs, just in case there is a problem. I also have a buyer's guide video available that goes into things to look for: ruclips.net/video/GbN2aq6Kepk/видео.html
@@AlexSanchez-oo1yu You'll likely lose more money leasing than buying a used one at 50k, but you won't have any repair concerns leasing one. It's definitely a trade-off that you'll need to consider. It's hard to know exactly what the "right" thing to do is. It truly depends on what you consider an acceptable risk.

No problem at all. www.quickjack.com/car-lifts/bl-7000slx/ is the link to the 7000 lb model that I use. I bought the heaviest lifting unit I could because I have multiple vehicles and wanted the ability to lift them all.
I have a 2019 bmw i8 I keep getting a message say drivetrain and engine will not start i changed battery, coils, as well as plugs but the message wont go away and still wont start.
I'm sorry to hear about your i8 trouble. You will need to visit a BMW service center. Drivetrain errors can be a long list of problems. I've heard of mice eating the wires under the car being one of them. The insulation is soy based and it attracts rodents. Other problems include electrical module failures. It's impossible to troubleshoot DIY
Either would be fine. I know a person with an R8 who said maintenance was also simple on the R8. The R8 uses more oil and has ore cylinders so you have to spend more on oil, plugs, etc. but the maintenance schedule wasn't that bad.
Whaddup man! I need to get you some help on recording these! You should have asked. It's that video kid from down the street. I can come over some time with wireless mics and everything!

Great upload Pat for those that own an I8, but maybe you'd do an upload with a detailed walk around of the I8 as well as one from the cockpit going over all the electronic nuances of the I8. Save the Wave.
I totally agree, I need to do this. There have been many videos out there from other i8 owners but they add or miss a few things I would like to cover.
Back before RUclips, I registered (and still own) 97vette.com which I posted photos and instructions on how to do things like jack the c5, change the oil, replace the exhaust, etc. This new-fangled video stuff is kind of cool :D
Thank you for the feedback. I never intended to actually make this video public, or even start a RUclips channel that got so many views. It was literally the first video I ever recorded to show other i8 owners how to do an oil change. Many lessons learned!
@@PatsGarageOnline oh wow really your first, OK I didn't realize that, I watch a lot of your vids, in that case you def got better, then please excuse my remark, I should have checked the date, txs for the response pat
BMW indicates: Filling capacity, engine oil change with oil filter element: Litres: 4.25. I would just fill it to 4L and everything measured just fine so I didn't feel the need to add another 1/4L.
I've only ever done it myself. I'm not sure what the dealer charges but it is likely $150, plus. I learned that if you buy oil and a filter through FCPEuro online, after your first oil change, every subsequent oil change is free. Check them out. You just have to order new oil and filter, send the old oil and filter back, and they refund you the money. Use PayPal to purchase the parts and PayPal pays the return shipping. It's almost too good to be true, but this means you only ever have to pay for 1 oil change.
This is an interesting channel I've found, I have to admit I've never seen anyone, ever, by choice, lube an O ring in used dirty oil before, especially when you have good clean non-expended oil on the ready. I mean besides other problems, the whole reason you're changing your oil is because it's time right, as in becoming, (although that's there in my opinion) non-usable, no good...so why would you lube with oil that lost all the lubrication and benefit properties? 37 years as a mechanic and I've never seen that done before. Why am I hear then? Because I've never seen an oil change on an i8 before nor do I work on German, Foreign cars, some Japanese cars, mostly domestic and tractors...do not do this. Use new oil to lube, it's like common sense. Also I'd still put Jack stands under just in case, should it fall you can fix the car, can't fix you if that let's go or slips. I don't know how I feel now about that o ring dipped in dirty oil, why wouldn't you lube it in good clean oil that has lubrication properties still intact? Hmmm 🤔 interesting. That's like applying expired suntan lotion to your back and then hoping it still works and you don't get burned, which you will. Ask me how I know lol ... seriously I hope I get a response to this one...thanks for reading.
@DAD TYPE 2 - i understand your concern regarding the used oil for the oring but it’s not as big of an issue as you have made it out to be, comparing putting old suntan lotion on your back with used oil is no comparison as the oils main purpose is to lubricate the moving parts in the engine, the oil on the oring is merely just to assist in making the installation easier, (it’s actually like putting suntan lotion on the soles of your feet, so it doesn’t matter if it’s out of date)so in essence there is nothing wrong in using the used oil for the orings but like you said if you have the new oil available then might aswell use that.
