Owny Madden wasn't as reviled as the title. He was probably the most respected by both the Irish in Hells Kitchen as well as the Italians in East New York and Bayview in Brooklyn. Louis Lepke was tasked at eliminating Arthur " Dutch Schultz " Fleggenheimer ending the infighting between Mad Dog Coll and the Dutchman and by settling scores with Legs Diamond once and for all. Some suspect that the then Chief of the Albany PD sent two detectives to the rooming house where Legs was holed up and bumped him because Legs hijacked a shipment of Alcohol from Canada bound for one of the Chief's roadhouses in and around Albany and because Legs was becoming a proverbial wart on the rump in upstate New York the locals wanted Legs gone.

He kept the accent for life and continued to keep up to date with what was happening back in his birthplace even keeping clippings from the Yorkshire post. He might have come from Irish stock and that bloodline would have helped a great deal in a tough Irish neighbourhood like hells kitchen but his birth place was England, when he was faced with deportation it was England they were trying to deport him to not Ireland.
