When I trained a German Shorthair, my Grandpa told me to wrap the bumper with pheasant wings using metal wire. He said it trains them to get used to the feathers and the wire makes sure they keep a soft mouth, so they don’t bite too hard. Seemed to work pretty well for me. Might be worth a try. Love all the videos!!

In regards to her bringing the bird to you, start giving her treats as positive reinforcement and she will be more willing to relinquish the bird to you. Or her favorite toy
I wish I could put 100 thumbs up on this comment. This is exactly what to do! You need to make it a trade. Treat/toy for bird. Depending on if she's food motivated or toy motivated is how you choose what to use.
Agreed,when the pup is still young but eventually you have to substitute praise and the actual retrieve as the reward.it,s gradual and age related.when my lab ,ozzy ,cracked 3 yrs old he was in autopilot mode.rarely needing handling.hunting on a river with swift current with multiple birds down he,d swim past dead ones ,mark them and chase down cripples.bring them back ,dump them on the bank and go back out for the dead ones aparently knowing the current would carry them away.all without me having to instruct him on anything.i trained him in current ...if a dog can handle that flat water is cake.

If Lucy brings the bumper back to you all the way, try taping a wing to the bumper so she understands that connection that she’s supposed to do the same thing with birds. Once she has that down, switch to the actual bird. Do short 5-10 minute sessions and keep it fun for her. Repetition is the the best way to train a dog.

When lucy is retrieving the bird instead of going away from her so she follows you try to walk in her direction a couple steps! It will fix that problem!

That bolt action full barrel is good only for lead shot. Steel shot doesn’t compress going through a choke and the full restriction of the barrel could cause a catastrophic failure.

Kentucky’s name is Scott and the rifle is a serbu rn50. The round was an over packed .50 Slap round. Those are some nice 12’s, I understand on the sketch on the bolt action I have a Winchester 1894 22 pump and I’m afraid to shoot it lol.
With pet lambs to get them off the bottle we put milk powder in the pellets because they know the smell that normally works with lambs

Baby rabbits should have alfalfa hay when they are older they should have Timothy hay 24-7 and should not eat a lot of peleltes

Flair! You should install a bell where you give them food and train them so every time you ring the bell all the animals hear you and know it’s meal time!

I’ve seen a lot of guys tie on bird wings to their dogs bumper that way Everytime they’re training with it they get the smell/feel of grabbing a bird, it could help with her getting over excited and trying to lay down and play with it instead of handing it to you, she’ll probably still do it for a lil bit but should stop after she gets used to it everytime
This is a good idea. She's over excited, that's why she's not using her nose. You can buy training scents to put on her bumper depending on the birds you will be hunting. After using bumpers with game bird scent, when the dog is reliable then advance to wings. Save the wings when you game dress your birds. Only when she is reliable should you advance to live birds and ammo. We would play fetch with our pups to teach them to retrieve, then to train their nose, we would apply scent, let them smell it, then hide the bumper. We would give the dog a line in general direction, say "dead bird, fetch" and let the dog go. At first make it easy, then hide up a tree, on a ledge, under stuff, etc all within reach, but make that dog use her nose. They don't all come out of the womb knowing how to scent, they have to be taught. Make it a game, make it fun but above all BE CONSISTENT.
Another thing, if she's killing birds that's bad. She should be able to retrieve a wounded bird and fetch it back alive. If she chomps a bird hard enough to kill it, that's a bird you do not want to eat. If she's doing that go back to basics. Use a scented bumper, but wrap something uncomfortable around it. The old guys used barb wire, but that dangerous. Maybe light weight chain. I've never had that problem with any of my dogs but we never let them chase chickens or any kind of small animal and never played tug with their toys. That just encourages hard mouth. You should be able to give your dog a raw untracked egg and have her carry it and deliver it to hand, uncracked.

Ok. We had a lab that would bring the dove to within a couple of feet then drop it. Quail, he would bring to hand. A professional trainer told us that dove (pigeons, too prob) have softer feathers that come out easily, the dogs don't like the feeling of loose feathers in the mouth, that's why they drop early. The way to fix is when they get close, kind of run backwards, calling the dog in a high excited voice. Then take the bird from the dog's mouth and praise generously. It will take a while, but if it's important to you that your dog delivers to hand, it can be fixed but if takes a lot of hard consistent work. Plus, be conscious to be safe with your gun. Be aware of what's behind you so you don't trip with a loaded gun. Safe it while the dog fetches the bird.

I own a 12 gauge 870 pump express magnum! My favorite bird pew. I first started it using it for deer. Put a few down. Then went to rifles for big game! Awesome purchase.
Awesome find JC Higgins in 12 Gauge. I have one in .410 and one in 20 Gauge. They both shoot great for being over 50 years old. Would love to add a 12 gauge someday.

she breaks way before u shoot the gun, she’s right behind the bird while your tracking it and that’s dangerous especially if u take her duck hunting with multiple people
True, you really need to work on her sit-stay before you put her on live birds and shoot over her. She should be solid. Pellets spread. My dogs all had one or two pellets in them. We stopped hunting first day because of the crowds of idiots that can't shoot.
Get a 6’-10’ rope to pull and bring the dog back to you.
She's a natural, it's in her blood. Keep it up and she'll be a great bird dog. Try birds (fake) on a string, work them further and further out keeping her on hold until you shoot in the general direction and let her go. Banjo would be a great help with it. Pheasant season is coming......
The best way to wean them off is too much up there pallets and half milk half water so it’s like a thick liquid and put it in a plastic syringe and very gently hold them in the towel and hand feed them one by one I know it’s tedious but it’s the best way. And also the wire cage is not good for their feet I would recommend giving them a playpen outside with a roof and splitting them into pairs so they don’t get lonely and neuter one

Bascially a magnum is a 12ga shell that is longer and has more propellant(powder) in the shell. So still a 12 gauge slug/pellets but with more powder behind increasing velocity of slug or pellets and increasing your range.
Give her a treat each time she brings the bird back to you so she constantly has a positive reinforcement with the whole concept of bringing it too you; if you keep going and getting it she already set that this is close enough im not moving. It takes about 2 months of that each time and it works
Magnum is 3 in or a high brass shell like a Remington nitro express Magnum it just has more powder not like a low brass like 7 and half pr 8 shot like you would use for clays or dove hunting 😉
Flair I’m 14 and training my own duck dog. The thing you need to do is if she acts up or doesn’t mind put her in a kennel. And last you have to make retrieving fun because bc that’s what she wants to do. Love the vids keep up the good work

It goes normal shotgun which hold 2 3/4 then magnum which holds 2 3/4 and 3 the ultra mag which holds up to 3 1/2 usually turkey guns
Put scent on the bumper and see if she drops it before a full retrieve. Also, that last shot was a close one. I'd work on the break with blanks and a bumper more. Make sure she doesn't break til you command it.

The 870 has a magnum receiver which allows it to shoot 3 inch shells. With the normal receiver it can only chamber 2.75 inch shells.

I have that same 870! I love it and it's my all around hunting gun short of big game. I use just regular 3" turkey loads all the time.
