Ocean Drive is one of the most popular areas in Miami. It is a street located in the South Beach area where all the clichés about Miami come true; Sculptural bodies skating along the promenade, dream beaches, tropical cocktails, loud Latin music, bike rides and restaurants of all nationalities.
Also located on Ocean Drive is the well-known Casa Casuarina, the former residence of Italian designer Gianni Versace. After his death, the house was sold and transformed into a boutique hotel.
The street begins at South Pointe Drive, just south of 1st Street, near the southern tip of Miami Beach's main barrier island, about two hundred meters west of the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean Drive runs north to 15th Street, just southeast of Lincoln Road.
Built in the 1920s and 1930s, the street is the center of Miami Beach's architectural historic district, which contains some nine hundred preserved contributing buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The street is dominated by buildings in the streamline moderne style, an evolution of the art deco style.
