  • My reaction and review of Never for Ever by Kate Bush, the progressive pop icon's third album. I'm already a huge fan of Kate Bush, my favourite albums of hers being The Dreaming and Hounds of Love, but there are a couple of gaps in her discography I need to fill and Never for Ever seemed to be the most urgent. I already knew the massive hit single Babooshka although I'd never given it a proper attentive listen. I was expecting a kind of transitional album between her early sound and her more ambitious 80s productions but this album surprised me in more ways than one. For my first listen, I went with the 2018 Remaster and it sounded fantastic.

Honestly it's hard to choose a favorite album by hers... Cause the beauty of Kate Bushs music is that there is a hole album for every situation you have to handle in your life... Her Music never gets old to me, I guess I'm just a hardcore fan of hers😁

You should talk about the album art .... its such an amazing illustration that captures the spirit of Kate at that time period where its quite darkly fantastical in a medieval and folkish way .... she is also seen dressed up as a bat in flight in the CD that I bought ...
I went through Never Forever obsessing from one song to another as those "lesser" songs grew on me over repeated listening ....
Overall, to me Delius will always be the best song on the album, I can go back to this track anytime without needing to be in the mood ... Egypt was overlooked at first as I only noticed the build up "ahs" in the second half, its really captures the mysterious mood of Egypt as the desert land of pharoahs and pyramids ... Army Dreamer was a lot more moving once I noticed she was singing in a sobbing tone towards the end of the song, its afterall about the young soldier being carried home in a coffin, the singing protagonist has to be his mother ...
I can say for sure that this album more than any of her other albums is one that really grows on people the more they listen to it ..... and its one where the level of greatness across the songs do not dip at all, they are all exceptionally great songs ....

"Hounds Of Love" gets all the...love, but I really think "The Dreaming" and "Never For Ever" are her two best records and listening experiences from beginning to end. Hot take (and full explanation another time), haha. I mean, you can't really go wrong with '80s Kate, but there's something so immediate and charming about "Never For Ever" that I think you responded to, even on this (edited) live stream. It was the first record in her discography that revealed her immense talents to me, especially the first two songs. The wackily whimsical instrumentation of "All We Ever Look For" strongly evokes '90s JRPG music... absolutely adore it! I know your chat wasn't too fond of "Violin," but I'm with you; its theatricality and diverse use of the titular instrument are irresistibly fun. Can't say enough nice things about this record, and I'm glad you finally got around to listening and sharing with us.

Cheers, Grant! Yeah I didn't expect to be ranking this one up with Hounds and The Dreaming but here we are. Pure magic!

Top 3 Kate Bush album for me. It's fantastic from front to back and has some of Kate's best songs, IMO. Glad to see someone give this album attention instead of the usual Hounds of Love reactions.

Such an amazing album, just rediscovering it after all these years! I love the song all we ever look for, so british sounding. Cant believe it came out in 1980? Like what? I love the dreaming as well .

When it comes to Kate Bush I'm not very objective. I decided some time ago that she is genius. I haven't changed my mind. ✌

The whistle sample is from the Fairlight. It’s one of the ones from the original disks. There’s loads of Fairlight on some of these tracks, it took me years to notice them!

Running up that hill is all based on pretty much one Fairlight sound (Cello2) that Kate manipulated beautifully! Sorry, I’m such a sampling bore…
