Pauline was a character who started out all sweet and innocent in the 80s and 90s where family was everything. But she became a lot darker in her later years, like it's been said she was never quite the same after Arthur died.
She was already very bitter by the early 90s. I remember a scene where Arthur said to her “When we met, you were so full of life. You didn’t have a bad word to say about anyone. That’s who I married, not this”! (Referring to 1991 Pauline who was a total misery guts). She got even worse in 2006 but she was only really sweet and innocent for the first 6 months or so of EastEnders. As soon as Michelle got pregnant in September 1985 (7 months in), she started getting weary and resentful.
"Pauline was a character who started out all sweet and innocent in the 80s," that's not really true; yes, she got a lot worse, but she was a miserable old sow in the 90s. The most insufferable POS to ever grace the Square
@@cliveevans9795Please someone upload the scene from 1991-92 where Arthur shouts at Pauline specifically for how bitter and twisted she has become compared to when they first got together. That would put an end to this myth that Pauline only became a misery guts in her last year or 2.
And Pam St Clement too…if you look around the 1 minute mark it’s very obvious. The new producers really trashed Pauline’s character, no wonder Wendy Richards wanted out by this stage
This is the year Wendy Richard left Eastenders. She's clearly not looking well at this point, her health is deteriorating and she's starting to look increasingly frail.
@@dannygriffiths7952 yes but that wasn’t the intention when they original killed her off, that was DTC deciding it was a mistake and trying to find a plausible way to bring her back. Bottom line is her character should never have got killed off so carelessly offscreen
I know a lot of people complain about Pauline’s character ‘assassination’, but the matter of fact is there are a lot of people like this and real life. With the crap she went through/put up with, it makes sense Pauline wouldn’t be all sweet how she started off. One thing I do disagree with though, is that Pauline wouldn’t remarry after Arthur died.
Love how kind Pat & Peggy were to Sonia here, Pauline was so sour faced and evil by the mid 2000s completely unrecognisable from her warm and kind hearted personality of the 80s & 90s
Pauline thought Sonia was bad she’d be disgusted by the way Stacey treats Martin I think they would have made up by now too and she’d be proud of what Sonia become.

I think by the early 2000s she was definitely becoming more like Lou - I think the custody case with Chloe (later Bex) was the first tipping point
I think she always had the nasty streak in her, the way she acted towards Michelle when she announced she wanted to go America another red flag
@@user-ed2gg2cb2tYeah, but she still had a heart back then. She just became nothing but vile in her last year.

Pauline’s character was never really the same after Arthur died
Then Mark's just made her completely miserable
She was a bitter woman.arthur wouldn't of had that
The widow turned bitter till the very end tut
After Lou died, she disintegrated after that slowly

I would think Wendy knew this wasn’t really the Pauline she’d created, Natalie too.

Pauline is a EE legend.
My favourite female EE character.
I love Pauline and she was one of my favourite characters but then they tried to make her like Lou and it didn’t really work
Lou's charm came form her being an old lady, and being there for her grandkids like Michelle, Ian and Mark. They just made Pauline bitter
L0ndon42 yes, I always loved when she gave advice to her grandchildren
I wish we got to see some Pauline Fowler vs Stacey Fowler scenes :( wish Pauline was alive to do those scenes haha
1:38 Honey Mitchell hasn't aged since

Am I the only one who dislikes Kate Harwood? The way she treated Kathy and Pauline was unforgivable!
What did she do?
@@salmon4703 she killed Kathy offscreen just so Ben could return and Made Paulines character very bitter

Killing off Kathy was Tony Jordan’s idea. Harwood didn’t stop it from happening but it wasn’t her idea.
Evil Pauline at the end was awesome
She was never the same after Saint Arthur's death!
Arthur wasn’t a saint
@@djwalkerfemaledj Ever heard of sarcasm?
Thanks mate

RIP Wendy Richards
Sonia’s pick pick pick needs to be made into a gif or meme or mashup remix thingy on a loop lol 😂

I think here she was bitter she started off Sweet then went Sour in the Mid 00s then in late years like here she become bitter.
She really became her mother near the end

The only time I felt bad for Sonia lol
hated pauline with an absolute passion
It was the last several years she went downhill if not after Arthur died.
Even actress hated what she became. That's why she asked to leave the show.
Just think pauline was bianca's great auntie.
I will always miss pauline and sonia is very annoying
1:04 pauline is right though. Sonia did bring it upon herself
