If you’re anything like me, every now and again you just want to learn a good ol’ dirty sounding groove that makes you wanna say… “Ooof”…
Well if today is one of those day’s for you, you’re in the right place!
As well as teaching you a great bass line that will make anyone in their right mind get their groove on, I’m also going to demonstrate a couple of great harmonic devices that you can using over static dominant chords immediately.
I wanna give you the “Ooof factor”!
This groove is based around an E dominant 7th style vamp, and both of the licks include the minor 3rd. Now if you know anything about dominant chords you’ll know that they are an extension of the major triad, i.e. the minor 3rd is essentially a wrong note - but, in this style of groove it still works! In fact it does more than work, it sounds fantastic and gives the bass line that real bluesy style sound.
I incorporate these types of lines and runs within my grooves as they’re a great way of expanding of the dominant 7th sound, and in-turn give you more options when grooving and soloing over static dominant chords.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Scott is Great! He's pushing me forward after 20 years of Playing!! He is able to bring you a lot of technics and theory without boring doings. Every Lesson is learning and Fun!
You videos are fantastic! Thanks to you, I nailed what my main problem was: lack of vocabulary. You gave me the motivation and the techical kowloedge to get better. Many thanks :) Cheers from Belgium.
love the ghost notes! great lesson!
you know.scott. you re my role model concerning bass guitar.i love your play and pray i get to where you are.thank you for inspiring me
Gosh that's one good bass, rich and distinct. I have concentrated on flaw-free and play anything so I need licks that are also musically intriguing. It's not technically hard. A good session. I've learned a lot over time and all is 100% Scott's.
***** Keep grooving man! :)
Scott Devine I will but I politely reject other tutors, only this bass-channel just so u know. You're ingellitent and that's important.)
THANK YOU MISTER SCOTT FOR SHARING YOU KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PLAYING BASS AM GLAD THAT WE HAVE YOU IN THIS WORLD...GOD BLESS AND MORE POWER......
Scott's lessons are easily among the best music lessons I've found on youtube. They're both practical and theoretical, but most of all they are musical and insightful. I play a bit of bass and keys, but I still watch and practise what Scott teaches. Having said that, are there any other youtube channels that produce music lessons of similar quality that I should investigate?
I personally also like Finbar Bass. He's a funny guy and he teaches well. From newbie to advanced players! Check him out!
Stick Men Mark Marxon
I have yet to run across any one who breaks it down and throws in the theory.
I have seen so many that just say "go to the 4th fret of the D string" If they even call it a D String.. I scream at the computer "Say F#, these kids are never gonna know what notes are. LOL
I absolutely love this tutorial and your cool slick bass riffs you play in between while your teaching, gives the sense that you're more than well informed of what you're instructing & you love what you do!! Thank you for this awesome lesson :) I'm a FAN!
Watching back after seeing a recent podcast where Scott talks about how he wanted really narrow string spacing because of his Gary Willis influences, I now can't un-see how narrow his Overwater string spacing is!
Yeah, the SD Overwaters have v. tight spacing!!
Firstly, what an excellent and enjoyable lesson! Love the way you emphasise that a harmonic understanding in required to squeeze maximum usage out of each and every lick (or motif, or modulation ... whatever!).
I also love the way (in the light of comments on recent other lessons) you snuck in "So What?" as an example in the section starting at 17:12 !
Cad Delworth Ahhh thanks Cad. Great to hear you enjoyed it :)
Thanks again Scott, I'm already thinking a million grooves I could fit those bluesy licks in. Hasta la próxima.
Augusto Lopez Awesome Augusto! :)
Dear Scott, i think that your lessons are the best in RUclips, and it help me very much. Could you please give some lessons to learn to improvise solo with blues? Thanks and best wishes from Mexico.
love it. Great teaching. Signed up for the 14 day trial recently. was completely sold on the academy by the next day
Thanks a lot for the thoughtful instruction! Finding ways to make our parts interesting by learning how to use our vocabulary in different situations is an incredibly valuable thing to understand. Keep up the good work!
Scott's face when he hits that SEXY note and he knows it makes me memories things better. thank you

Super lesson!
What bass is that ?
Is there a better way to start the day? Cup of coffee and a smile in your face.
Damn that was filthy
What's the bass's brand ? looks like an amazing product
Do you have any videos on learning the notes on the fretboard?
89Kele focus on learning your e and a strings the other two learn off the octave of E and A. but generally i learned quickly from jamming with more knowledge able people, for instance they call out the key or the chords in a jam you gotta figure it out quick lol.
+89Kele I'd just jam with a printout of neck note diagram. You'll learn it over a pretty short time.
Scott mi boyy ur doin great just wondering if u can do a vid on the titanic theme song zander zen did a really kool one on YT
I am just going to learn this lime crazy! Ta mate! Also, what is with your right hand and the glove? Are you having the same trouble as with the left? Cheers!
Paco Lopez I have it in my right hand too Paco. It just plays up sometimes. Keep grooving man! :)
Hey Scott, thanks for the great lesson as always! :) I'm having trouble with the double stop part, whenever I do the hammer-on with my third finger and pinkie it always mutes the ringing A. I got small hands and I tried adjusting my finger/wrist position to let the A ring but to no avail. Any tips? :(
Scott would it help your neural condition any to run tapewound strings?
What excercise do you recommend to help with moving down from string to string in octaves ? I struggle with making that smooth transition..
im from from russia and i enjoi this sound \m/
Ernest Faizullin :)
I found myself grinning the whole time watching this
What would be a good drum track/style to go with this?
What kind of compressor are you playing through? I'm guessing a multicomp? cheers
What bass amp does Scott use?
Is this a groove an intermediate player should stay away from ? I'm having trouble coming back up the fretboard after the pinky finger...I think its the 5th note..
hey scott what strings are being used on this bass ???
💪🔥💪
Scott, I know you always play a long scale bass, 34 inch. What is your opinion of a short scale bass? 30 or 32 inch scale?
Get some piccolo strings on that thing!
That bass has a 33" scale actually :)
I don’t understand the third part I can’t get in the right position to not mute the a
Hey Scott! (and anyone else who reads this comment) I got a question for you: As I've been playing more bass recently, I've been noticing some dull ache in my hands, not always when I'm playing. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what this is/how to help it.
Timfine See a Rheumatologist if in time it does not get better. Might be arthritis, but if you haven't been playing a lot then it's probably just the fact that your using different muscles. Try stretching(look up some exercises on here for stretching) both before and after you play. Stay away from artificial sweeteners, and canned drinks(especially those energy drinks) they kill your joints and ligaments. Eat a lot of cherries and blueberries, even if it's only in Greek yogurt or smoothies(as long as no artificial crap or xtra sugar). And keep hydrated, dehydration can cause muscle cramping. Also if you drink too much tea or coffee/soda it will cause hand cramping. I know this because I did all of that shit. Plus booze can do it as well. Try to eat a more natural diet. And get some excersize, if your outta shape you get tired more easily. But it could be something else, so if none of this works or you think it's more serious go to a Dr. Also if you smoke it can cause issues with pretty much everything. After I quite made a hell of a difference.
Wow, thanks! That's a really comprehensive answer. I really doubt that it's arthritis, seeing as how I'm only 17 and in decent physical condition, but I'll look at the stretching and diet stuff for sure.
I need a shower now
@dapunisher1000 check out Scott's bass lessons THE CHROMATIC APPROACH
cool. BUT IM SO CONFUSED!!!!!!
Why can't I get that tone?
16:56 - "That's right, bitch."
Seems the red glove was a hit. Future generations will rock the glove in tribute to Scott. No self - respecting bassist will have to ask what it means.
Ha
Scott do you personally write all these?
If so, you're as great a writer as a player.
And if not
