- In today's video I want to show you a little update on my citronella plant since we transplanted her into a bigger pot a few months ago. She's starting to grow a lot of side shoots which I am going to be propagating.
In this video I'm going to show you how I propagate my citronella mosquito plant the easy way, so I can increase my collection without buying more.
Please remember to like and subscribe if you would like to stay updated on more videos to come from "Stacey here we grow again".
As always, Thank you for watching and Happy planting! I really appreciate every one of you for stopping by and continuing to support me throughout my journey!!
Thank you! I have a rather wild citronella that I made a dreadful mistake and put it out in the sun. I moved it and then put an umbrella over it. I need to salvage as much as possible. This was perfect. Don't sweat the video quality. I appreciate the realness of it.
Your welcome! I appreciate the kind words🦋 I have some growing in morning sun too. Just about 4 hrs each day and it does great. The florida sun can be a real bummer for these, along with the excessive rain. I provide a bit more protection in the summer, especially for my small propagated plants.
Should you water them from the top, or pour water in the container they sit in (bottom up)? Thanks, Im a noob here but absolutely love my citronella (and Jade) plants
Thank you so much for this. My citronella is leaning because it's grown so much. It's time to propagate🤗
Interesting, I'm from the UK and I have a lemon geranium / citronella, I got from a cutting and have been growing for several years, it was really leggy for a while and ended up a bit neglected since I had it in a small pot just draped over some furniture in a forgotten part of my sitting room separate from the rest of my plants so I'd often forget to water it, but it clung on and survived. Last summer instead I got it out and put it with my other plants in the window and gave it plant food regularly with water now it's grown so much even though it's winter now I've repotted it into a larger pot and taken some leaves that fell off in the process to see if they'll propogate. It's a beautiful plant now it's really going for it and it smells so beautiful I love it. I had no idea it was the citronella plant until now. Thanks for this video. I've been saving the dried leaves due to their scent. I'll definitely use them for mozzie protection in future. Thanks for the info. 😊🙏✌
Found this video just in time! My citronella has grown so large it's leaning! Chainsaws aside, very concise and informative video. I'm hopeful now ☺️
Thank you! I'm so happy I could help🤗 It's what I love to do
Here I am again for another round! Yay! My babies are growing and thriving like crazy. Thanks.
You are the cutest! No need to apologize for the camera. You did a great job. Very informative and helpful! Thank you 😊
Thank you😊 I'm happy to help whenever I can!
She is very easy to understand and watching the video was easy to see exactly what she was talking about thank you
This is the best video explaining how to propagate and care for my citronella plant which is growing crazy. Thank you 🌿
Thank You SOOO Much. Every time I propagate my Citronella I stream THIS video and hang out with you! You are my Citro Propo Buddy. AND IT Works! hahah I am so proud of how big my little babies have become. EFF Mosquitos.
So happy to hear I can help! 🌿 I love growing citronella.. It smells soooo good😌 I haven't done any videos in a whole but I'm going to be getting back into things soon.
I really appreciate all your support! 💞 Thanks for being here!
My daughter has a Citronella bush and I take cuttings all the time and put them in vases around the house because I love the smell so much. They last forever and continue to bloom their pretty little flowers. They make excellent greenery for flower Bouquets. Long after the flower die and I pull them out the greenery stays beautiful.
Mine is rooting in water when should I transplant it to pot
I usually pot my cuttings after good root growth starts.
I managed to find a website where I ordered 3 citronella plants, no one around here had any. Only one of them survived and it looks really good and is growing really well. I’ll take what I learned from your video and grow more for next summer! Thank you!!
That's great, propagate away lol. I'm so glad you were able to save 1!
Thanks for sharing your story with us😊
I have one of these and they grow so fast! Hardy plants and I love the smell they give off when you crush its leaves. Thanks for this video and the helpful tips!
They do smell soo good when you crush or brush up on the leaves 🍃 Thanks for stopping in! Glad I could help!
Thank you for your video. It was the first one I found and it gave me everything I needed to know in a short helpful video. I just purchased 2 citronella plants and had been looking for more but they seem to be in high demand and hard to find. I am going to plant my own once my two grow a little bit more. Thanks again!!
Anytime! Let me know if I can help in the future 😁
I can't believe how rapidly my citronella turned into a very bushy little tree I'm going to trim it just like you showed and start a couple small ones thank you very much
Thank you so very much. Very useful information. I have never had one before and you just answered all my questions. Glad I found you.
So happy I could help! Don't hesitate to ask if you need anything else😊
Thanks so much! I took some cuttings and planned on putting Them in water to grow new plants. Now I will just plant directly in soil with rooting Horomone
Anytime! I'm always happy to help! I just plant them directly into the soil and keep it constantly moist until they root. They usually root pretty quickly with the rooting hormone added😉 Just try not to keep the soil too wet or too dry because they can be pretty sensitive and temperamental sometimes lol
Wow. Thank you so much for this info! My plant is growing very Chaotic and crazy. This was SO INFORMATIVE!! Going now to trim and propagate my plant!!!! 👏🏽
Your welcome!
I add a leaf or two to my tea pot to brew together and it adds a lot of amazing flavour to it. Must try
Great to know! Thanks for sharing and stopping in!
Thank you for the instruction I have a very bushy citronella plant keeping it in indirect light all day in So. California. I'm excited about taking some cuttings and putting them right in the dirt thank you for your guidance!
Your very welcome! You can also start them in water first if our worried. Sometimes the cuttings won't root directly in the soil, sometimes they do.. it usually depends on the cutting itself. Once roots start to appear, you can plant it up into soil . If you choose to root the cuttings directly in soil, just remember not to keep it too moist or too dry.. the cuttings might wilt a little bit in the beginning because they don't have any roots yet. Once roots take place, the citronella plant should perk back up😉 Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Good luck, keep me posted if you can😊
So exciting 😊
I’m in zone 9b and I had mine in two pots at the entrance to my front door. It survived there for a while but the sun started toasting it’s leaves. Eventually I had to repot them and put them under shade. They are doing fantastic and growing big. I hardly ever do any pruning to it.
Thank you me n my friend have been buying them for years so this sure will save us some $$.
Glad to help
Once again, propagating successfully down here in South Australia! I have so many Big Giant Babies and little ones as well. It is Spring turning into Summer down here in the Southern Hemisphere. I ALWAYS rewatch this and hang out with you when I am transfering citronella over. My Husband thinks I am MAGIC! hahaha Thanks Love!
That's too funny lol.. I'm so glad I could help and I'm happy to hear you enjoy my videos so much! It makes me feel good when I can help others reconnect with the beauty nature has to offer 🌸🌱 You grow girl! 🌱 I wish I propagated more a few years ago. The summer was pretty darn brutal on my Citronella plants this year, I have to admit. We had a crazy hot and humid summer. I'm glad it's starting to cool down a bit, finally! 😁 Hello to you in South Australia, I'm so happy to see so many people all around the world joining the growing community. It's amazing what we can all accomplish together when helping eachother grow 🌱
Thank you for your constant support throughout my journey 🌱 It's a pleasure to share my experiences with all of you 😊
Hey, we just bought one plant..I wondered could we do that..thank you! My hubby has the "green thumb" & we watched the video together..we are definitely gonna try this.
Let me know if I can help in anyway. Wishing you the best of luck😁
Very helpful! So glad I found this video.
Glad I can help! I'm always here if you need anything😊
FABULOUS !! Thanks, I needed this ! Video lighting, etc. is fine !
Glad I can help!
Thank you for sharing. Now I know where to cut mine back at.
no need to apologies babes thanks for a great video! I love this plants scent!!
Watched 4 videos seeking info. Got more infor from yours, enjoyed listening a watching. OJT "On the job traning" leaf nodes knowledge, approx 4' length cut, clean shears a MUST, Water propagation not as favorable, how to use plant for "ankle biters" Excellent teacher. I'll subscribe TY so much.
So happy you enjoyed the video ❤️ Glad I could help! Thanks for being here!
Stacey,
I live in Bremerton, Washington, the great Pacific North West. I have a Citronella Plant that is a year old, she has gotten tall & lanky. I transplanted her today & branch fell off so I needed your information on what to do next, now I will trim and shape her up and have lots more plants. Thank you for the video and your information, BTW you did a fantastic job with your camera work 👍🏼😃
Patti Jensen
Your very welcome Patti😊 Let me know if you need anything else... I'm always here to help in anyway I can🐞🍃
Once you get the hang of propagating these, it becomes a lot easier. They can be a bit tough to grow in the beginning, when your first starting to learn, so remember to hang in there and keep growing.. I'm here to help if you ever need anything 🐞🍃🦋
Thank you for sharing this, I didn't know the proper way to propagate
Great video! Thanks for taking your viewers through the steps of propagating. Gives me confidence to the same.
Anytime. I'm always happy to help whenever I can 😊
Good info, I've been trying to prop in water with little success!
Hey Stacey, I am in Florida also and have the exact same experience , they like indirect or limited sun, grow really fast and smell great. I tried propagating in water and no luck so I am going to utilize your simple method. Thanks!
Yes absolutely. I grow mine in just a few hours of morning sun, but the rest of the day, they get a break. I started propagating directly in soil, because I get better results. The plant might be a little wilted at first, until it grows roots, but keep the soil moist.. not stopping wet and it should start perking up in about a week. I have a lot of videos to do before this one, but it's something I'm going to be showing again. I've propagated mine like crazy since I did this video and have so many plants now. I recently propagated a new branch and it rooted after about a week, week and a half. I planted it directly in soil. So glad I can help, let me know how it turns out.
Stacey Here we grow again Will do, so far it looks great! I’ll get back to you in a couple of weeks . Thanks again!
I wish you the best of luck with propagating😁 Can't wait to hear how it turns out for you.. I have much better luck this way.
Honestly I have 3 in texas heat, they survive well here outside in direct light with the current 108 temp
This was a great video. Very informative. Thanks for sharing.
Your very welcome!
Thank you so much for the video. I’ve purchased my first citronella and wanted to make sure to process care for her. I did not know about spraying them in the evening; had no idea. This is great info. Thank you again.
This plant unless had bugs on it if infested then spray, plant does more than fine Going with out watering spraying
Thank you, this was an incredible video!!
Your very welcome
Thank you for mentioning you are in Florida. Too many videos on RUclips do not say where their garden is. I am in Northern Illinois. My babies are huge. Now being November 13, 2021 Gerry & Ray have come into my house. Snow has begun here. But these guys are 4ft tall & have octopus arms. Just needed a reminder how to separate. Thank you. Wish I could be somewhere warm. Grow all year around.
Mine is getting to be pretty tall too. It has those octopus arms your talking about lol. I usually don't have to overwinter my Citronella, I just cover it if the temperatures get too low. Anything below 50° this plant seems to start going dormant and loosing its leaves.
When the temperatures warm back up in the daytime, I uncover it so it gets some sunshine
Among your subjects
Always fun
May God guide you to a beautiful future
Thank you so much!! Your kind words are very much appreciated! 🦋🌼🐞
Great video! I Very detailed on how to propagate. I'm a noobie when it comes to that so I was freaked out! lol
Anytime! We all have to start somewhere. I'm so happy to see more people getting into growing and hoping we can bring more into the community so we can show the beauty it has to offer. There are so many different plants and possibilities🌱🍅🥕🌽🌻
Also, thanks for your video, very good information and I am going to propagate two broken off leaves, now I know how!!!
I throughly enjoyed how to propagate my citronella plant I am a new subscriber and look forward to what you have in store your camera did a good job.
Thank you so much for your kind words 💕 Welcome to my channel 🌱🌸 I look foward to doing more videos in the future 🪴
Excellent video. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome! I'm happy to help 😊
Absolutely what I needed to know!❤
Thank you. Your video was very helpful.
Thank you for the help! I was wondering how to do that as I got one a few months ago and it’s gotten big :)) it’s even sprouted some beautiful flowers.
Thank you for sharing! That's always exciting to see😊 I love all the different walking iris plants. I was just given a blue flower variety last yr and I can't wait for them to blossom.
You'll have a ton before you know it!
Thanks. I will definitely give this a try.
Thanks so much, and more about this plants
Thank you for the helpful info. I'll be trying this some time today. Subscribed.
Thank you! Great information!
Thank you for this very informative video.
Your welcome! Glad I could help! 🌱
Thank you Stacey! I have a nice little lady growing on my deck, and she is begging to be trimmed up. This was a perfect video for me to learn to propagate and grow new babies. Have you every made candles or oil with the leaves? Just curious because that is my next step!
Hi there. I'm a little late with responding so i apologize. I've never tried making candles or oil. It's something I definitely want to do though. We just lost our frenchie bam bam due to cancer last month so it's been tough. He fought so hard for 2 years with natural remedies I did at home. I'm so grateful we had the time with him. I'm trying to get motivated to get back into videos.. we have so much happening lately so it's tough. Thanks for being here ❤️ I'm glad my videos are so helpful, that's what I love to do is to just make things a little easier for everyone through my experiences and trial and error. Btw I believe you can make oil with the leaves 🍃 😉
Thanks for the help.
I wish i could send you a picture of my 2... i kind of forgot about them after changing their pot for bigger ones and they got so huuuge 😅 now i know how to cut them properly, i never did ! Thank you, i'll try (and cry because they will surely look a bit weird after this drastic cut 😂)
Hi there. Im sorry to hear your having trouble. It happens with these plants sometimes because they can be a bit sensitive to sudden changes.. My email is Staceyherewegrowagain@yahoo.com.. feel free to send me an email and a few photos. I'd love to try and help if I can
Hi Stacey! Thank you for doing this video. My Citronella is only about 2 months old, I bought it from Lowes. Actually, I bought 2. When you say before the mosquitoes come out, to spray the plant, I'm assuming just with a spray bottle and plain water. We have well water with many minerals, so usually as long as I remember to water them, my plants do well. You told me how to propagate, which I need to do soon, they are very leggy already. I'm really just not sure about how often to water and the spraying. Thanks again for a great video. I live in Tennessee 7b.
I water when the soil is almost dry but I don't let it dry out completely because it'll cause the leaves to droop and stress it. It likes a well draining moist soil medium but not overly saturated as it can cause a mushy stem. As for spraying the plant down, yes, with water, you want to be careful not to do this too often because keeping the leaves wet too often can cause diseases. You can just rub against the plant without spraying the leaves down if you want and it'll have the same effect. I just take a piece of leaf and rub it on my body, or I rub the plants leaves gently with my hands, like petting it almost to release the scent within the leaves. This is pretty effective. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much. My citronella was growing crazy.
This was so helpful thank you!
Your very welcome! 🌱
How do you water it? I read somewhere that it should be watered daily, other readings suggest to water it every week only. Which is which? Nice video by the way.
It all depends on the type of climate it's in and what's going on around it.. you should take into consideration the pot size, the size of the plant and how fast the soil is drying out, how much sun it's getting etc.. I like to water my Citronella plants when the soil is almost dry to the bottom. From my experience, they like most soil, but not soaking wet. They don't like their roots to stay dry for long because the leaves will start to wilt and eventually die off. Too much water and the roots may start to rot. A good draining soil that's rich in earthworm castings works well for these. I use burpees organic potting mix and like to add bone meal, blood meal, earthworm castings to the soil. Hope this helps. Lmk if you need anything 🌱 I'm always here to help if I can.
Excellent video. Used your method and it worked wonderfully. Next time, I'd recommend recording a voice over though for your video while you are surrounded by chain saws. ;)
Sorry I didn't even realize. I've gotten better with blocking out the background noise, at least as much as I can.. I'm so happy to hear my method worked out for you! I know these can be tough which is why I wanted to share my experience with everyone. We were probably cleaning up after a storm when I recorded this video lol. Thanks for stopping in!
Love it! Thanks so much. Always a pleasure
Anytime! Thank you for stopping in and for all your support!
Kudos your one handed propogating skill 😛🙂
Amazing video!!!! Thank you so much
Anytime! I'm always happy to help😁
so so Helpful and ty so much for sharing u did a great job dear ty
You don't have to use rooting hormone? Everything I saw trying to make sure I don't ruin the cuttings I've ordered says to do everything you showed bit also dip in rooting hormone before placing deep in the soil. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm so glad your video was the only one to pop up on my Google search 😉 Thanks in advance for any advice!
Hi there. Sorry for the late response. There are so many different methods out there, the trick is finding the right one that works for you and your type of climate/growing conditions. You could definitely use rooting hormone if you wanted to, it shouldn't hurt a bit. Some people don't have rooting hormone on hand so I like to give other options. I have used rooting hormone on many of my plants before and it does help, if it's used correctly. You just need a little bit of that stuff because it's pretty concentrated. If too much rooting hormone is used, it can cause the stem to suffocate so I use it sparingly and make sure I tap the extra powder off the stems before planting my cuttings. I'm always here to help so don't hesitate to ask if you need anything 🌱 I hope this helps and answers your question 😊
Thanks you for the wonderful instruction. Video is fine.
Your welcome! Anytime!😊
Hi Stacey. I did propogate a cutting the way you do but I also used just the leaves to propogate in soil. I didn't know they were going to root! Lol. Thank you for the video!
Yes they will!! Its amazing lol. I've tried it too, by placing a few leaves in a glass of water, just for a little table mosquito repellent, when we were sitting outside and I left them there, within a few days, roots started to grow. I don't believe a new plant will grow, but at least you have roots on the leaf, to keep it alive for a little bit. Plants are so interesting and that's why I love to grow them so much. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your story. I love to hear what y'all are up to around the garden. 🦋🍃🐝
Thank you so much! It really is a helpful video. I just purchased my 1st lemon citronella plant. I wanted to ask if you can tell me how you use the plant leaves as bug repellent on your body. Can I put in leaves in a spray bottle with water and spray them on my ankles?
That actually sounds like a great idea lol. I might try that. I've never tried lemon citronella but I'm sure they're pretty similar. Sorry for the late response. Our little frenchie was battling cancer these past 2 years and we just had to put him down last month. It's been a little tough getting back into things. I appreciate you being here!
Thanks and your video is fine 😊
This was very helpful! Thank you!
Anytime!
very beautiful and wonderful
Thank you so much! Your kind words are always so appreciated! 🦋
Thank you so much. This was super helpful!
Thanks for the help!
Now I might buy one of those big $20 plants from the greenhouse knowing I can propagate it
Absolutely 😁
I'm so happy I can help! 🍃🐢🌸🐞
I never pruned mine😭now she is tall and spindly, and a little bare...is it too late to top her?
I don't believe so.. mine is growing so much again. I would cut a little at a time just so you don't shock it by trimming so much all at once.
@@StaceyHerewegrowagain Thank you!
Thx great info
Lovely video, thank you! If I may make a correction, though the leaves smell like it, scented geraniums do not have citronella which is the chemical that repel mosquitoes.
There is so much controversy on this plant. I appreciate your input very much. As to my knowledge mine is a citronella, which is in the geranium family. There are many types of species out there and this one I have does help with mosquitoes. It doesn't repel them totally but it does give off the citronella scent and helps to keep them away a bit.
I take the leaves and let them dry and put them in pantry and garage to help keep the winter mice away.
Beverly3397~
That is misleading information. I don’t know where you heard that but it is false.
I have over wintered mine in the garage for 6 years and I can guarantee
That they do not keep away mice or other rodents.
Traps and bait for rodents.
@@tinaknutsen I actually use the victor rat zapper when I do come into one. No plant is going to keep rodents away I'm sorry.
I never heard of any plant keeping rodents at bay lol. Especially rats and mice.
@@StaceyHerewegrowagain
They do not like mint, citronella, moth balls. One must keep apply it on a regular base. I use a combination of them. Each month I change the strength from one herb to another.
loved your video. Question: how frequently do you water and do you water direct or from under. One last question: do you use any plant food. I love the mom plant and the babies too.
I water the soil from the top, trying to avoid the leaves a much as possible and I water whenever the soil dries out completely to the bottom, before the plant start a wilting. Over a few weeks time you'll find a happy watering schedule for it depending on your climate and where it's located, type of pot it's in, type of sun its receiving etc.. Remember the amount of waterings you give per week will all depend on what's going on around it. Investing in a three way moisture meter really helps in determining when to water your plants if your unsure in the beginning😊 I believe I have a video on the type of meter I use and the way I use it.
Thanks for stopping in, I'm always happy to help whenever I can!🐞🍃
That plant is beautiful Stacey. Do you think the plant does a better job of keeping mosquitoes away then the candles? It seems like the candles don't do well at all.
Absolutely! Some have different outlooks on this type of plant but in my opinion.. its my go to mosquito repellant for these Jumanji size buggers we have here in Central Florida 😄 Have you ever seen that movie, yeah that's us being carried away by them as soon as we walk outside lol.
Mike and I actually did a test, he put on tons of bug spray from the store and I rubbed the plants leaf all over my neck, ankles and wrists. I didn't get 1 mosquito bite while I was outside but Mike was torn apart. I keep telling him to put some on instead of chemicals that come out of a can. I like to use mother nature herself, for as many things possible😁 It only works a certain amount of feet per plant, which is why I believe some say it doesn't work. (the big one I have does about half to a quarter of my lanai, when misted or touched to let the scent out).
Hola Stacy from Mexico. I just received 3 semi mature citronella plants about 12 inches high. I was told buy the seller too water them every three day's to avoid root rot.
He also recommended that I transplant them into bigger self draining pots ( as I live in a apartment with no access to ground soil ).
Question➡️ What type of soil do you recommend for this transplant and plant food ( feed how often)?
Also, it's best to keep them out of direct sunlight as this will cook the leaves..yes.
The U.V is strong here. They are also in my screened in patio very similar to yours in this video. They are in a well ventilated area with plenty of cool to warm breeze..
I do plan on probergating some of the bigger side branches at some point after transplant. I certainly don't want to put these pretty plant's in any kind of unnecessary shock.
Sorry about the lengthy comment and gracias for the very direct and informative videos you direct / produce 👍
That was very helpful!
Thank you I have a lemon scented geranium in my house and its sooo tall
Your welcome😊
Are you in FL? I noticed you say lanai. My dad lived in Indiana for 75 years and when he moved to FL, porch became lanai. I'm in zone 6 and wondered if you can overwinter these. Thanks for the video!
Watching video *keeps glancing at my plant*
Mám citronellu letos od jara. Potřebuje i v zimě hodně světla? V létě byla venku, teď je v suterénu, kde je moc málo světla. Nebo raději do kuchyně uvnitř bytu na parapet - dost světla? Děkuji za odpověď.
U right all natural is the best repellent plus I keep them outside in pots I like these plants question can I save the ones In the pots I have for the winter
I overwinter mine if we get temps below 35° f..
God bless you on the subject values and excellence and waiting for your new wonderful and distinctive you from me the most beautiful greetings and all the best to you, O Lord =============== As usual wonderful creativity and put worth to follow Thank you waiting for the next coming
That's beautiful
U R A GEM
Awesome! Thanks!
Thank you. Very nice.
Thanks for the great Video
Hey my citronella doesn't look like that, it has sticks/wood and can grow into a tree. It's leaves looks similar to yours bit mine are bigger and rough when rubbed and have more fragrant. Is it a different type?
It sounds like the same plant to me. Citronella plants are really just scented geraniums. Depending on the size of the plant, the leaves may be bigger than others. I have a big citronella, which is a mother plant I use to propagate off of and she grows really tall into a tree like plant. Most all scented geraniums aka Citranella plant leaves, release their fragrance when you brush up against them. It helps to keep the mosquitos back so I can enjoy my time out on the lanai. I just pluck a leaf and rub it on my neck, wrists and ankles, no more mosquito bites for me or my little French bulldog. Some people say it doesn't work, but I feel it really does because when I'm oitside without it, I get lit up by mosquitos, if I have it on and release the fragrance from the plant, it helps to deter them away from where we are sitting.
Great information Stacey!!
Thank you!🐞
Thank u.
Some of my plant's leaves sometimes get tiny brown spots on them but otherwise the plant looks healthy. What could be causing this?
It could be an issue such as malnutrition, but it's important to understand that not every leaf is perfect and there will always be a few here and there that have issues.
It depends how bad it is and if it's occurring on all the leaves or just the bottom, which is usually normal leaf death.. brown rust looking spots on these usually means over fertilizing or too much sunlight.. for me anyway, hope this helps!
It can also be caused by too little water.. meaning you could be letting the soil stay dry out, for too long in between the waterings. Just a few tips I thought of.. hope it helps!
how come experts tell it does not keep mosquitoes away-- love to grow it, and over winter in the house saving spending $10 for start in the spring- but assume the experts have it right?
Citronella plants are really scented geraniums, which mosquitos prefer not to be around. Hence the name mosquito repelling plant. I feel there is so much controversy with this one, some saying it doesn't work and some saying it does (like myself). In my experience using it, It helps to keep the mosquitos at bay when I'm outside, but It doesn't repel them totally, like bug spray would, (although it does a great job!) but it sure helps me not to get bit when I'm outdoors. Honestly, I don't use chemical bug spray anymore, I usually just rub the plant to release the scent when I'm outside. They carry their scent a few feet away, so having many of them in one area is recommended if your trying to keep mosquitos at bay. I will say, my husband gets bit all the time with bug spray and I don't get much at all, when I rub a leaf on my neck, ankles and wrists. I'll be doing a video soon on what I feel about this plant because there are so many mixed opinions, when it comes to if it works or not. Thank you for mentioning this. Its one question many struggle with. I'm not an expert or anything, I just learn from what I grow and found this one helps to repel the mosquitos a bit, but it won't prevent all mosquito bites as nothing really does lol
@@StaceyHerewegrowagain just had guys with fancy phd's say it doesn't work- but either way I like to grow it, give it as gifts--
I just got a plant starter and I was just wondering if this toxic to animals, I have a cat and he like to try and get to my plants
Yes I believe it is. I wouldn't advice putting it where he or she could reach it. Chewing the leaves and stems can cause severe stomach upset.
Thanks for sharing this video!!!!
Your so welcome!
Hi Stacey, when do we need to water this plant? Do we keep the soil moist or always allow it to dry out before watering?
It does like to dry out a bit before watering again. Overwatering will case the stems and leaves to rot while underwatering will dry them out. When the soil is almost completely dry, I go ahead and water, before the plant starts wilting of course 😉 They don't like to stay dry in between the waterings
Hope this helps 😊
😊🌱SO INFORMATIVE 🌱😊
Thank you! Happy growing 🌸🦋🌸
I purchased 2 of these plants but they told me they don't repell mosquitoes 😔. Woman said that citronella grass, like lemongrass is what repells mosquitoes. I hope she's wrong. How about if some leafs are brown and yellow around the edges.
That's a great question actually. Citronella helps to repel mosquitos, but it doesn't get rid of them, or repell them completely. There's a lot of controversy on this one. Lemongrass and citronella grass are different than what I grow. Mine is a scented geranium also known as a citronella bush. When I activate the leaves by brushing up against them or spraying them down with water, it helps to release the scent and mosquitoes don't like it, so they tend to stay away from the area. One plant, only works for so many feet. Browning leaves can mean a few things. I live in Central Florida Zone 9b and my citronella burns from the sun, especially in the summertime, if I don't protect it from the harsh conditions.. the leaves start turning brown and yellow. Also, it can start turning brown from underwatering. Hope this helps
