      It definitely makes engravings look so much better!
      Going to do a lot of signs with this method too very soon

    Your affiliate link is branded as Borax Substitute rather than Bicarb of Soda - are they the same thing? Packaging looks very similar.

      Yeah the same thing. The main ingredient in the substitute is just bicarb of soda 👍🏻

    Yes, bicarbonate of soda and baking soda are the same thing. Baking soda is the American term for bicarbonate of soda, and both are chemical compounds with the name sodium bicarbonate

    what about fumes? I heard borax is toxic to burn and some people in groups on Facebook loose there mind over using it, but i do appreciate how good that black result is

      It depends on what you read and where you read it. Some places says it will kill you on contact others say it’s fine.
      The amount used and dissolved in water in my opinion isn’t any more toxic than the wood you engraving on.
      There are plenty of borax substitutes out there, literally called ‘borax substitute’ that are used in many cleaning products.

    What is the soot like? Compared to borax. Does it smear as much?

    • @MARCAM
      @MARCAM  Год назад

      It does smear but I wouldn’t say as much as pure borax. I always spray a clear coat afterwards to stop any smearing

    Cheers, I'll try this in the morning, I have something I want to burn but I couldn't be bothered to cut the wood tonight. I always have plenty of bicarb in the house because I rescue rabbits and it's great for removing odour from the carpets in their rooms if they miss their litter trays

      That’s pretty cool! One of the great things about using this mixture is it does smell pretty nice when mixing 😂

      @@MARCAM I don't have a paint brush to hand so I put it n a trigger spray bottle, I'm just waiting for the second cat to dry In the morning sun so I can give it a go. I need to dab some black paint on jars too so I can engrave them later. I don't know what you use but I found a cheap water based pant in The Range that cost just over a quid for 500ml so it will last a lifetime for me 😂

      @squirrelmanbob I’ve been meaning to fill a spray bottle up and try that too. Just hope it doesn’t clog up the nozzle.
      I got my paint from them What! Stores. It’s poster paint too so works great.

      @@MARCAM it shouldn't block it, if it does warm water should dissolve it or failing that vinegar. First attempt came out way too dark but that could be due to the image I was using so I'm not blaming the bicarb, I'm sure it was my fault so I'll lighten the image and try again. Everyday is a school day they say 😂

      @squirrelmanbob the first one I did came out just pretty much a black blob (didn’t show that 😂)

    whats the mixture ratio for baking soda & hot water?

    • @MARCAM
      @MARCAM  6 месяцев назад

      I honestly don’t measure it. Just pour a good amount in and stir it up.
      I’d say 2 teaspoons to a pint would be a good amount though 👍🏻
