  • Day Seven of our 2022 journey along Scotland's Southern Upland Way long distance trail was originally meant to be a tough 17-mile hike from the Chalk Memorial Bothy at Polskeoch to Wanlockhead in the Lowther Hills. However, a couple of niggling injuries and a disappointing navigational error saw us cut the section to ten miles, stopping in the town of Sanquhar which, for the Southern Upland Way, is a veritable metropolis. Not only would the stage be much shorter and less hilly but we'd booked ourselves into a comfortable B&B at Newark Farm.

I made the exact same mistake you did after leaving the bothy, so much so i missed the waymerk coin because i was already behind schedule.

Really glad I'm not the only one! I definitely find that I'm inclined to make mistakes in the most relaxed circumstances. It still gets mentioned. Did you get any other waymerks?

@@thedurhamcow3535 I have so far collected 11 out of the 13 coins, I'll return next year and collect the other two. I put the ones i have in a framed picture with a map of the southern uplands. So I've got two empty spaces for those coins to fill 😉

@@os-walker Ahh, you did better than us - we only managed (hang on, let me count them) SEVEN! Pathetic!

@@thedurhamcow3535 Seven is not a bad haul, I’ve found most people don’t even know they existed till they finish the trail. You can always go hunt them on a day trip, the good thing about that is it gives you plenty of time to search for them.

@@os-walker We actually went back to Wanlockhead and Sanquhar for a weekend for a number of reasons including a visit to the 'Metaverse' and to do the alternative (original) route through the forest from Cogshead to Wanlockhead. Still couldn't find one of the waymerks we missed, though after researching it, I suspect I know where it is now but if we go back, it'll be an expensive waymerk!
