- Rajya Sabha TV brings to you ‘Virasat’, a series which explores the life and times of distinguished artistes from various fields. In this two hour special episode, watch a biopic on the musical legend and a highly gifted lyricist of the Golden Era of Indian Cinema, Shankardas Kesarilal, popularly known as ‘Shailendra’.
His lyrical profundity can stand on its own in the pantheon of Hindi poetry for its creativity and class. Apart from his contribution in the world of lyrics, he produced the award winning film Teesri Kasam. Shailendra was also involved in the IPTA movement which aimed at mobilising progressive tendencies among artistes. He is fondly remembered for his outstanding contribution to the film Industry.

Immortal songs by the great Shailendraji. After almost 40-5- years still remember my growing up in Bombay, the radio going geetkaar Shailendra, etc on All India Radio and Radio Ceylon. We would wait for his songs to play on the radio.
He truly deserves the Bharat Ratna even if posthumously.

An excellent and informative presentation. Happy to know that Shailendra ji & Renu ji became good friends. I think the three best films that I have seen (in hindi) are Madhumati, Teesri Kasam, and Guide. Coincidentally songs for all three are written by Shailendra. Could never have known about Shailendra so well had it not been for You tube. Once again hats off to the electronic, computer science & other engineers for this develpopment. It certainly brings to our doorstep this great VIRASAT.

Virasat - beautiful programme on the great poet Shailendra .I feel that he didn't get his due during his lifetime. Teesari Kasam was his masterpiece. best direction by Mr. Rajesh Badal. request to produce such programme on V. Shantaram

I was listening to his creations, the songs, repeating the song many a times: Ruk ja raat, thahar ja re chanda. Then I found this video clip highlighting the life of this great musician-composer. I am so much emotional watching this !!!

Badalji-I cannot thank you enough for introducing and reuniting with Shailendra's authentic genius, towering personality and immortal work. I cried more than the daughter of Shailendra..........i watched it a few times and am deeply anguished yet grateful and utterly privileged that a unvarnished colossus like Shailendra existed in this world, even for a short while! His experience in producing 'Teesri Kasam' reminds me of Socrates drinking poison with a smile. True geniuses impact people for ages to come regardless how long they lived. Shailedra is an immortal in every sense of the word! Your very memory cleanses our souls of all the putrefaction and artifice! I bow my heart,soul, head....

I am with you in this.Also keep it the mind about excessive physical & mental stress he underwent.While producing the film Teesri Kasam , backstabbing done by his own friends hurt him more.With him his own friends became dishonest
All these things taken toll & finally he succumbed disillusioned.
