  • Needless to say, all the videos in this series contain ruinous spoilers. But some of the more unexpected events may not be entirely real.
    So I've gotten a new computer and a bunch of new recording equipment, and I'm still figuring out how best to use it. While this microphone is much better than anything I've had before, it's picking up a large amount of reflections, and the processor may have set my voice to be a bit bassy. So there's still room for improvement, and I've got a second microphone to experiment with too, but I couldn't postpone this upload any longer.
    Although it's been about six months since I announced I'd be getting back into making videos, I had a lot of stuff to sort out (like the new equipment) before I could get started on anything. So it's been about two months since I started on this video, with the last 30 minutes of it all being created in the last three weeks. That was pretty intense though, so I'll only putting in those kinds of bursts when it's needed.
    Before anyone complains, yes, I am aware that the game does not have anti-aliasing turned on. The checkbox for the in-game setting does nothing, so the only way to get it is to force it through the graphics card settings. Unfortunately, once I start recording game capture with that on though, the game slows down to about 15 fps, and the gravity shoots me way up in the air very fast. My last computer from 2012 did this too, and it still happens on my new 1080TI, so I've resigned this to being an unsolvable software issue for this particular weird old game.
    The added sound effects came from King's Quest VII and zapsplat.com.

    Actually, let's be honest, what actually happened with the parts where you "fall" into the lava? XD Did it crash somehow?

    Ha, I JUST checked your channel maybe two days ago to see if there was another one of these. Glad you did another one of these!
    I do wish you would have went more around the central island or made gravity bring you down the wind tunnels to see what would have been down there.

      Perhaps I should have, I dunno. While anything in the game can get a cool new look through flymode, I didn't see anything special with that area in particular compared to other things flymode does.
      The special feature this age presents is the mazerunner, and so I wanted to devote the majority of the time to that. Sometimes I have to pick and choose what I cover, otherwise nothing would ever get done at all, heh.

    Good to see you making videos again more regularly. Hope you don't get frustrated at the small viewing numbers early on. The first year back or so will probably be a bit rough in terms of clicks. Keep it Up!

    Thanks so much for continuing this series.
    I have been hoping for the last 3 years that you would continue it.
    My favorite part of the MYST island part was the giant generator room.
    You actually can tell that it is that way when playing the game normally. If you move sideways, you can see the depth. You could also see it if you play the game in stereoscopic 3D. I have long wanted to do that, but I haven't been able to, because the nVidia 3D Vision drivers only support Direct3D 8 and later. At some point, I may create a Direct3D 7 emulator that supports it, but that would be a lot of work.
    I had no idea that the generator room was giant before I saw your video. It creeped me out. I had dreams at night about it, in which I was actually in that area.
    I haven't tried to get to it yet. You said that it is extremely difficult to get to. What makes it so difficult? Is there a barrier, or does it not normally render when you're in that area? With the other areas, you have been able to get to them by floating.

    • @shadyparadox
      @shadyparadox  5 лет назад

      The issue isn't the generator area itself, but rather the regions outside.
      The problem is that the usual strategy of floating upward and around the portal doesn't work because the control room and the cave leading down to it have clipping on the ceiling. So there isn't a way to escape the normal boundaries unless you start all the way outside.
      At the part of the video with the generator, I said I would show the alternate method in a future video. Well, I actually did show this method on the Mechanical Age when I accessed the lower room beneath the elevator, even though I didn't actually mention the generator at the time. Instead of floating around the portal and turning, what you do instead is pass through the lower part of the portal as you fall through it.
      In the case of the generator, it's more difficult because the cave leading down to it is actually several rooms separated by even more portals. So you start outside, slowly sink behind the portal leading into the generator, turn to enable the region inside, and continue to sneak through the bottom of 3-4 more portals as you traverse the cave down to the control room (you have to fight some clipping along the way too).
      Once you get to the door, hit the button, and pass through the bottom of the portal as you sink through it. Then you're ready to save and re-adjust gravity. The control room itself is easy at this point since there's no clipping, so you can just slide on in to the generator room.
      Maybe, hopefully, there is a better way. But I wouldn't know of it.

    • @barichm0
      @barichm0 5 лет назад

      @@shadyparadox Another thing: You said that the generator area is inconsistent with the rest of the region. Actually, it fits in. It is located in an underground cave below the water. The control room is near the top. If you look outside, you can see that there is nothing that it would intersect with; it just goes underground and below the water.
      It is larger than MYST Island itself. But it is not part of the island; it is located below the ocean floor. The generators are probably powered by steam.
      Sometime I'll try to go there myself. I tried the "fly" trick in realMYST a very long time ago (around 2005, when I originally played it), but didn't do much with it. I had no idea there was this much to find.
      I hope I'm able to get stereoscopic rendering to work with realMYST. One thing I didn't mention in my previous comment: realMYST also supports Glide 3. Glide is much easier to support than Direct3D. I already have created a modified version of OpenGlide that can be used to play Glide 2 games with nVidia 3D Vision. If I make it support Glide 3, it should work with realMYST.
      I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like to go into the tunnels in the Stoneship Age when they're flooded.
      In the mid 1990s, when I was a kid, I had many dreams at night about the Stoneship Age. In one of them, I was going through one of the stone tunnels (which was lit), to get between two areas, and the tunnel flooded behind me. The water remained still when I saw it, but after I moved further down the tunnel, when I tried to go back, I found that the water had advanced behind me, and the parts of the tunnel that I had previously been in were flooded.

    Great video - a lot of the graphics glitches I think are due to alpha drawing algorithm which relies on z sorting going amiss as well as the lights not using z buffering to clip properly but instead using drawing order which falls apart when looking backwards. These issues are from my own experience from doing 3d games in Game Maker where I have encountered similar glitches if not careful.

      Also if you finish Myst and fancy doing a similar series I would love to see you do Uru as the movement is so restricted and there seems to be lots to explore outside the the reachable areas.

    • @shadyparadox

      Interesting. Yeah, when I fly around all I can do is report what I see, it's great when someone can fill me in on what's actually going on.
      My ability to fly around Uru would depend on such a hack existing. I only fly around this game because I know how to do it.
