I would've prefered that little object NOT hit the moon. Just imagine earth with a second tiny little baby moon! That would've been nice! :)

Since i played Kerbal Space Program, i wish earth had a second tiny moon like minmus.

@@xDerLuki Yeah, it be cool if there was something small between earth and the moon, imagine living there, At night you could see the moon and the earth taking up the entire sky.

I wonder if the heat from this could be felt from Earth

Damn I wonder if the same thing happened on Earth o.O I would usually be more curious what would happen if it hit somewhere on dry land in our present day and while most of Europe turning into a melting pot of lava would be quite an interesting "sight" I gotta say "vaporazing the world`s ocean" is probably the most epic thing I`ve ever heard :D "God tier" power is literally a minimum requirement for for such an event to occur and to be honest I`m not sure I actually know of a God that could supposedly achieve such a feat. It`s so epic that even human imagination couldn`t think of it when it tried to come up with stuff of that sort.

It likely happened multiple times on Earth during its early history (with or without Late Heavy Bombardment). But Earth has plate tectonics, oceans and life on it, so all traces of those impacts are gone. Vredefort is the largest preserved crater.

It doesn't show the basin formation. In fact, this seems to not form any basin.

filled by the magma. Impact basins depth do not exceed 0.1 % of the Moon diameter. You then won't see a "hole"

@@Kaldisti In fact it is 0.7%. Anyway, I feel that basin was not formed as illustrated in this video. I think it was made by a very gentle touch with another rocky spherical cold object in a very low angle trajectory. It would be an almost non explosive contact. This video assumes a too huge explosion.

@@joparicutin 7.5 km depth corresponds to 0.2% of the Moon's diameter. It was probably lower at the moment of the impact, because the lava basin sank when it cooled.
About the impact settings, studies about it are pretty few, I set the simulation according what I found, i.e an assumed impact angle of ~30° and a relatively low velocity (between 15 and 20 km/s). That's what I set in the simulation.
In any case, the impact basin where 5% of the Moon's mass has been excavated is not a "gentle touch" :p
