  • This short film from 1983 documents the installation of a Ming-style garden courtyard at The Met, the first permanent cultural exchange between the United States and the People’s Republic of China. Twenty-one craftspeople, five engineers, plus a chef, were brought over from Suzhou to construct the courtyard. Suzhou gardens have been renowned in China for hundreds of years, with their unusual rock formations made of naturally eroded limestone, elegant wood architectural elements, and fired terracotta brickwork.

Makes me miss Suzhou. It’s such a beautiful and cultural city - the gardens, the music, the river, the traditional silk dresses, the food, the lifestyle. Thank you for sharing this video.

Beautiful Ming Garden. I would love to live in a house and garden like that. This is how we should be learning between the two cultures.
Each exchanging different ideas and working together. It is not about which cultures is better than the others. It’s about what we can learn from each others and respect one another.
I love it when the American foreman asks the Chinese foreman could he set up an extra lunch bowl for him. The jester was priceless.
We are all part of one being, we are all human beings. 🙏🙏

thx for sharing this. I went to its original garden (The Master-of-Nets Garden)from Suzhou city every time I passed by. This replica is almost same except the skylight. Anyway, it’s really great to see this again in nyc, when I was first time to see it in nyc.❤
