Seatpost and seatpost clamp is the major problem area for me. Dirt gets in there an it creaks and the noise travels trough the whole frame. Tough to locate. My solution was a new clamp without quick release( a dirty quick release is really loud and the torque is never perfect anyway) A simple clamp with a bolt is torqued perfectly and less prone to get noisy when dusty. Even better to cover the slot in the seat stay to avoid dust and dirt between post and seat stay.
This must be some sort of coincidence. So Bought a new bb all great adnd good without the creaking ,after 100km it starts again the things I did to make it good were:lube my seatpost; trying different pedals; cleaning all the transmission of the bike;cleaning/lubing skewers and the problem was the rear derailleur bolt that fixes to the frame was not tight enough. Conclusion I went crazy with this creaking

Only to find as I went for smaller rings there wasn't enough adjustment in the high direct mount front mech.

But each time I independently replaced a component the damn creak was still there! After all that I finally found the culprit. It was a loose rear derailleur hanger! Upon inspection I noticed that it was barely finger tight. I took it off, cleaned and greased it and put it back on. The creaking noise was finally gone.
I cleaned and greased the freehub body on my eMTB as well as the cassette but the noise is still there. Metal-under-tension like creak and sharp bang when under medium to hard load due to pedaling. Now I'm suspecting it might be the rivets keeping the largest cogs together on the cassette.

Mine turned out to be the Free hub needing a good cleaning. I hit it with WD-40 and kept turning it to get the oil deep in the mechanism. It worked. I needed to remove the free hub using a 10mm Allen wrench BEFORE hitting it with oil.
Can you elaborate? Do you mean where the pedal goes into the crank arm? Cause that's exactly the problem I have, clicking at exactly 2 oclock on the drive side crank arm on every rotation. I have a GT Avalanche Comp 2019 and RF Chesters
Thanks for this tip, I have a click, and swap between flat and clip pedals regularly, re-grease the threads, but not cleaned the interface, so will try that.👍
@@Gabriela-jc4pt I had the same problem it drove me crazy for months the bike was in and out of my local bike shop but the click never happened when they rode it. Needless to say I felt dumb.
I'm trying to silence a creek in a chromoly 98 fisher hoo ko e koo. It has been this way for a few years, I just learned to live with it. I had the bottom bracket removed, re-greased and re-torqued by a reputable local shop a couple years ago. It ONLY makes noise after about 40 minutes into my ride. Dead silent before that. Does not seem dependent on ambient temperature. It only creeks on hard pedaling and only on the down stroke of my right foot. I am slowly going through the trouble spots. New shimano SPD pedals first since I needed new ones anyways. I have a chainring bolt spanner wrench incoming. I will remove and thoroughly clean, re-torque and loc-tite the bolts. Hopefully I don't need to remove the cranks.
Henry 1 things that makes a lot of noises in my experience are the jockey Wheels also. My bike originally came with some without bearings and I replace them with bearing jockey Wheels to quiet them down because they were making so much noise
my non drive crank arm. turned out the bolt was not pushing the crank arm in enough on the tapered square bb. had to file some parts down and improvised a washer made of aluminum, et voila, no more creak.
I had a creak due to some dirt in between the crossing points of two rear wheel spokes. It took me weeks to figure that one out. I even had the whole free hub disassembled cos I though the creak would have been in there.
SRAM XD free hubs do need a good application of grease on the threads, the cassette interface cut outs and the end of the body where it sits against the inside of the 10 tooth end of the cassette. Also grease inside both ends of the cassette.
Got a new creak goin' and it's ruining my day to day existence, constantly thinking about it! It mostly occurs on preloading before jumps, or railing through berms when heavy weight and speed is applied. Strangely, the bike is mostly quiet during heavy torque on climbs. Driving me nuts. Could it be headset related? I already cleaned out headset bearings and bottom bracket area. I didn't do anything to the crown race, though. It looks like in this video, he uses a lot of grease on the crown race (1:45). Maybe I should try that...Ugh, I am at a loss.
I saw that video too and I thought it was a strange place to use grease. Did you ever figure out what was causing the creaking? I'm going to the same thing and like you it is ruining my day to day life! Its all I can think about.
@@tac6044 It was the coil on my shock! I had upgraded the spring on the shock because the bike shop said I was too light for the spring that it came with. I put the old spring back on and it's been silent ever since.

⚠️PLEASE HELP ME⚠️🙏 For a while now my Mongoose switchback sport has been creaking and I have no idea what it’s from. Btw I’m a beginner mtb and I don’t know much about them. Whenever I go uphill or stand up and apply pressure to my peddles it has this brain tickling creak. I have tried lubing my spokes and cleaning my entire bike. Does anybody know what else I could try. Could it be a loose crank maybe?
I had got a terrible creaking on my former bike (Canyon). I had controlled so many things and I had already bought new bearing shells. Then I wanted to replace the bearing shells and it turned out that one bearing shell wasn't tightened enough.
In general mechanical engineering they are always given for greased fasteners. For the components it does not matter cos torque is torque. But a greased fastener reaches the torque after some more thread pitches are screwed in. That does of course provide more safety.
I can’t get my shimano BB80 out of the bottom bracket of my GT distortion. I’m looking at having to buy a new bike due to inability to find the bottom bracket link🙁
I've been having a creak that happens on hard pedaling which i found out was my chain! it was so annoying but once i lubed it again the noise went away. But it does keep coming back
My renthal fatbar 35 carbon lite makes a creaking noise it is in a renthal apex stem and it is set the the recommended torque setting (5nm) i have even tried using park tool assembly compound to no avail, any ideas? (The stem requires no gap on the bottom of the clamps)
Ive been riding my trouring/city bike on trails and it started creaking, guess ive been a bit too hard to it, but i cant help myself exploring when im commuting. I might need a Gravel or XC bike haha.
If my saddle rails are creaking where they join the saddle, I'll spray some WD40/GT85 down into the join, wait a while for any excess to evaporate and problem solved
you can absolutely clean bearings. but if once cleaned it still doesnt go smooth you need to change it. this is because it just has some dirt in it vs the balls being actually damaged
how do i know the size of the bottom bracket for my mtb without taking it apart and measuring it? are all mtb bottom brackets the same size? I own a 2010 norco scrambler 17"
I just bought my first bike about 2 months ago at the age of 35. The first one I received the front wheel bearing always bad out of the box. So I exchanged. Took them a month to get me another and I have been riding for about 3 weeks to a month now and very much enjoying. New issue is I had a very loud squeal come from the pedal area but it stopped so I left it alone. Yesterday while peddling up a very small incline I had a pop like I just changed gears and since then any time I stand and pedal I have a pop and a creak coming from the pedal area again. The bike is only a month old and it hasn’t seen off road yet and it is carbon fiber. Anything info would help. I don’t want to go another month without a bike but I’m not sure where to go from here without exchanging it again. Thanks.
I have this problem on my brand new bike, no dirt between the spokes. My last bike did this as well and I never really figured it out. I started mountain biking just over a year ago, and both of my bikes do this, so it can't be to rare of a problem, but I can't find any solution online
You missed a really annoying one. The hanlebar touching the stem. If its all dry and maybe not torqued properly it tends to creak. The best method to find it is apply pressure to one end ot the handlebar and immidiatly after to the other side.
My little one’s 20” bike started making noises coming around the rear derailleur when he pedals to a certain position after he fell on the bike path. I can’t see any visible damage and I am still unable to find out exactly where. The derailleur looks clean. But it seems to be shaking a bit on the lower gear. #askgmbntech. Any suggestions please.
Any physical impact on rear derailleur such as fall down during ride or someone hitting from behind or bike collapse cause this knocking problem from Cassette cogs and chain. *Rear derailleur hanger is bending.. *Shifting indexing is out of line.. *Guided pulley and tension pulley is bending/out of line *Rear derailleur housing/body is bending/out of degree shifting angle..
Can the frame itself creak? I tought it was from the bb so i changed it, but still it creaked from the same area I tried the seat area but still creaks, mainly when pedaling or when im sitting down and hit a bump. Thanks!
Seat tube, saddle rails, where saddle rails enter the saddle (front and back). If a press fit bb, did u use locktite bb retaining compound? Hope u DIDN'T use grease on a press fit bb shell (just axle).
@@rupedog I took it to the bike shop for the bb because I didn't have apropriate tools so i was scared to mess somthing up, so probably they used the correct stuff

Hey guys, I have a very weird creeking/vibration/rattling on the front brake. I tried cleaning the pistons with some oil (like your tutorials recommended). Whenever I go fast, it starts making a vibration sound, and when I pull the front brake very slightly the noise goes away. Any help is appreciated!
Could be resonance frequency of the whole bike system. The whole frame and bike vibrates and a certain speed the resonance it met. There isn't really a satisfying solution for that. There are some dampings that can be placed beneath the disc... An easy fix might be to check whether all bolts are tightened.
I currently have a raceface aeffect that is creaking. Search for a video on servicing your model or take it to a bike shop. A clean and relube is a good place to start.
I’ve got a question, my XT (M8000) RD is squeaking/creaking when I compress my suspension but only when the clutch is on. Anyone had this issue/know what’s wrong :( drives me insane
The clutch can be adjusted and, sounded odd to me at forst, but needs a thin smear of grease. Shimano do a special grease, maybe shared with hub gears, but it's crazy money for the amount you use. Can't remember who did a video on it. Don't think it was Seth but someone similar. Sure you'll find it if you search.
The Browns I’ve heard you can adjust it but wasn’t sure that would sort it. Maybe needs some grease as well. Clutch works really well just sqwaks when compressed
I had pedals creaking when pushing harder and thought that it was my bottom bracket. Noise would go away sometimes after riding in rain. I just had to pull out the medals, clean and apply some grease... I did not have the knowledge neither the grease to put the pedals properly the first time.
I suffer from creaking between my clipless shoes and pedals (SPD system). Everything is old and worn out, but I need it to last a bit longer. I have tried many things to make it quiet, if you guys have any idea please let me know :)
Clip pedal-shoe interface can creak especially when worn (pedal bars or shoe sole), more so on bar type systems like crank bros or Time. Its where the bars contact the sole, especially if not a caged pedal that supports around the cleat opening
For creaks best solution are good headphones :)

Don't forget the spokes and nipples, WD-40 and tightening loose ones can be the problem. Also chainring bolts can loosen, antisieize or grease works.
Strangely, I never had a problem with the original spring and always thought it was great out on the trail. I decided to take their advice and see if I noticed any difference so I gave a new spring a try and it was fine for a few months but then that horrid clicking-creaking! I put the old spring back on and it's been silent ever since.
The most anoying was the breaking of the weld of my head tube
As owner of Sram GXP...
...No creaks, means no ride ;)
But oval chainring 30/32 can be noisy as well under load.
why does the rear hub sometimes crack? even on a new bike!
Worst i ever had was a steertube creeking in the crown of my marzocchi z5 back in 2000 or maybe The creek from the inners in the crown on my judy race back in 2001 ,eventually the rippt clean out! Daem!! Shit was bad back then😂😂
⚠️PLEASE HELP ME⚠️🙏
For a while now my Mongoose switchback sport has been creaking and I have no idea what it’s from. Btw I’m a beginner mtb and I don’t know much about them. Whenever I go uphill or stand up and apply pressure to my peddles it has this brain tickling creak. I have tried lubing my spokes and cleaning my entire bike. Does anybody know what else I could try. Could it be a loose crank maybe?
not first and what about the creak in my knees @ 56 years of age ;-)
Your pivot points in your knee need new grease
Another very helpful video guys 👍
Glad to hear it Lee!
Great video, thanks..... what is the brand bearing tool you are using at the end of the video around the 9:09 mark? can you add a link? thx again
I had got a terrible creaking on my former bike (Canyon). I had controlled so many things and I had already bought new bearing shells. Then I wanted to replace the bearing shells and it turned out that one bearing shell wasn't tightened enough.
Are typical listed bike torque specs for dry or lubricated fasteners?
Good question. I would quess torque specs are dry values and adding grease will mess them up. But maybe nothing to worrt about..
Spraying silicone lube where the saddle rails meet the saddle works.
Biggest single cause of MTB creaks? KS Lev integra's that's what.
omg same haha
rusty2222 that bad?
@@lfsiuvagacwoi Tricky to cure. Copper paste is the fix, better design from KS is the answer.
@@rusty2222 how do you fix that?
No way!! really. I have a crazy creek I hope its that.
I've been having a creak that happens on hard pedaling which i found out was my chain! it was so annoying but once i lubed it again the noise went away. But it does keep coming back
I just pack the rails where they enter the saddle with grease, no more noise
That attracts so much dirt and in the end causes creaking
A light spray with WD40 is all it needs. Doesn't need grease.
WD-40 ,pedal springs and cleat bolt interface also.
I have this creaky noise on my front suspension when i press down how could i fix this?
If my saddle rails are creaking where they join the saddle, I'll spray some WD40/GT85 down into the join, wait a while for any excess to evaporate and problem solved
shoot ive had some creaks from slightly bent cogs on my cassettes and from tacky coatings on outer cable housings.
My bottom bracket makes a clicking sound when I pedal hard. Clicking when the pedals were level. What could cause taht?
the bottom bracket
@@dalelakusta8143 I knew that:) But does anyone know how I can fix it?
@@meinefresse94 replace the bottom bracket, if you take out the bearing and turn it it can make a clicking sound
Ahh, the microspline. I just got it fixed after months of unsuccessful services both in and out of warranty. My bike sounded like a rocking chair
The bolts from my rear brakes were squeaking that was hella weird lubed up and all gone
Got something on mine, think it’s pedal bushings.
you can absolutely clean bearings. but if once cleaned it still doesnt go smooth you need to change it. this is because it just has some dirt in it vs the balls being actually damaged
I watched this and it helped my bike Is silent all I can hear is my tyres on the floor thanks for the vidio
how do i know the size of the bottom bracket for my mtb without taking it apart and measuring it? are all mtb bottom brackets the same size? I own a 2010 norco scrambler 17"
They arent but I think yours is 68mm
I've never had headset creak.. it's always way worse and it's fork csu creaking 😫
Ayy Henry is back in the studio!
My seat creaks i just blast it with wd40 and i goes away for a couple days
Or you can disassemble the clamp system, clean it, reassemble to proper torque and not have to deal with it for a long time
S Transou its where the rails go into the seat not the clamp
Mountain Bike Addict yeah it happens on my boardman saddle
What mini grease gun are you using
What is that grease applicator tool you're using with the little red knob?
Press fit parts are the worst: fork crown / steerer and crank spindles can’t be serviced.
My fork when you press it down you can hear fork oil what should I do
Mayo on the downtube, works everytime 👌
I have a full suspension with a can creak back shock ironically it has started creaking
Maybe because it's over 5 years old
I just bought my first bike about 2 months ago at the age of 35. Thanks.
I have a constant clicking noise coming from the front wheel area, haven't been able to get rid of it yet.
Check the spokes. I had the same on the rear. It was dirt in between the crossing and contact point of two spokes.
*Guided pulley and tension pulley is bending/out of line
*Rear derailleur housing/body is bending/out of degree shifting angle..
Freedom thanks mate. Guess I have to give it a closer look. Hopefully it’s not too hard to fix.
It's probably the hanger cos it's designed to bend during crashes (instead of the derailleur itself)
How did you read my mind, my pivot points have been squeaking lately 👀
Nah after changing worn bottom bracket, still there was some annoyin creak when pedaling, at final i found it at the cassette, after installing new one the bike become smooth and silent. :))
Is there any way to stop my bike from clicking when I’m not pedaling
Suppose to do that
@@ReyDodo no its not my fixed gear never did that
You forgot the seat post clamp area.
I have a photo frame mounting hook lost inside my bike
Anyone have a fix for spokes creaking even if they are all snug on 9mo old stumpy..Im almost positive.
Put a drop of lube in between the crossing points
I've discovered my dropper post is creaking and it drives me crazy, what can I do (I'm not much of a bike mechanic)
I currently have a raceface aeffect that is creaking. Search for a video on servicing your model or take it to a bike shop. A clean and relube is a good place to start.
@@batterybuilding thanks!
How to quiet my "Thirsty Kirsty tires" from laughing 😂
I suffer from creaking between my clipless shoes and pedals (SPD system). Everything is old and worn out, but I need it to last a bit longer. I have tried many things to make it quiet, if you guys have any idea please let me know :)
What I find messed up is people always grease outside of a sealed bearing... that's doing nothing
When im pedaling i heard 5-6 creaks on my bike.
Clip pedal-shoe interface can creak especially when worn (pedal bars or shoe sole), more so on bar type systems like crank bros or Time. Its where the bars contact the sole, especially if not a caged pedal that supports around the cleat opening
