Spent a good hour tinkering with this. Cleaned the laser with "iso" alcohol, then I think I turned the screw too far to the right. Turned it counter clockwise about a half turn... and it (finally) worked. Back to Crazi Taxi! Thanks.
Thank you for this comment. I tried turning mine clockwise the first time and I still had the same problem. Then I tried turning it counter clockwise (maybe a quarter or half turn past the original position) and it worked!
DUDE I THOUGHT I WASTED $40 on a bricked Dreamcast but after watching this video and using your technique I am happily playing code Veronica. Thank you so very much!!!
Thanks mang, at first I tightened it a bit too much and the disc was going at rapid speed. Then after loosening the screw it went too slow. After tightening just a tad bit, it started reading discs! Thanks for the tut my dude.
I can vouch this method works. Found my old dreamcast and it wasnt reading disc at first but after following the turtorial its working like a champ. Time for some good ol MvC2 and PowerStone.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I hadn’t played my dreamcast in a long time and found it being unable to read the discs. Found this video and you saved the day. Long live Sega 🤘
I’ve got this problem as well, but I really needed to see exactly how far to twist that potentiometer. It’s obscured both times you made the adjustment :( I know this was a while ago but do you happen to remember how much of an adjustment it was? I’ve spent hours tweaking it back and forth with little result. Sometimes the disc spins up to full speed, then just slows right down. It never reads though.
Thanks for this video man. Just bought two defective units and fixed the controller boards. One of the units also had this problem, tried your fix and voila! Got two fully functional units now. I smashed that like button like light punch in marvel vs capcom.
Had a problem with my Dreamcast only reading games when the lid was partially opened, but tightening the potentiometer worked perfectly, in less than 5 minutes. thanks!
Hi excuseme an you help me? My DC read game disc ... I canmove on startinh option, but when i start to play go in CRASH . Video remain blocked. Manily with sega rally, f355 and other games. With other i can play normally. What can i do? Please help me . Thanks
Nice video🙂But it’s good practice when you take the cover off to open the lid first, then take it off,and the same when your putting it back, because you could break the pice in the back, and then it won’t spin.Besides that, nice job🙂🙂🙂
It kinda worked but then it kinda didn't. Started reading but crashing or having the music cut out after a certain amount of time. Eventually I couldn't seem to find that sweet spot again so now it's not reading at all =(
I did exactly what the video told me and when I was done I saw the disc spinning and then I saw that the disc was stopping and going a lot and it slowed down and stops?! And it has the same error again?! I think there’s something wrong with the thing that makes the disc spin? I need some help please!!!!
I think due to the GD rom drive constantly in motion and vibration of the spinning disc this causes the screw to move over time. The screw only needs to be very slightly off to cause issues.
Whoa easy on that cog, ouch! It helps to grease the gears/cogs with a LITTLE petroleum Jelly. You're adjusting a POT for the laser right now. Increasing/decreasing the resistance. Anyway making adjustments on the laser has extended the life of so many Dreamcast systems I have. Bought them on Ebay with people claiming the eye is shot just to tweak the laser. Just bought one with no video. The guy didn't seat the PSU all the way. Had to replace GD-ROM from a cannibalized system that had a bad DAC. Speaking of, has anyone found an easy way to fix a DAC, or a bypass or something? If not I'll be troubleshooting traces for HOURS!! If someone has any info please help!! Thanks ;)
Hi. Would you know if changed all the capacitor of my US Dreamcast all to solid capacitors make it read the games again (not even the CD can be read- music CD)? The Dreamcast is relatively new, it's not been used for a 1 week (24 hours each day) in total. It was working well the last time I used it but now it won't read, after being stored for more than 1.5 years. I already cleaned the lens with 99% alcohol but it now won't read. Suggestions are welcome. If yes, replacing all capacitors in the unit (except the modem) with solid capacitor, will fix this, is there a shop who sells a complete Dreamcast solid capacitor? If there's none, any list of all the unit's capacitors and values? I have another PAL Dreamcast, I've replaced it's GD-ROM but it keeps burning the chip in it, I wonder how this can be fixed. It first started when I left the Dreamcast for about 8 hours playing one song, from a music CD, in an infinite loop (I fell asleep). Thank you. Stay safe. God bless, Rev. 21:4
I know it’s been a long time but I did it and it worked but it broke off the thing so I can never twist it again. Do you think I’m going to need to twist it again in the future?

I couldn't remember where the motor control was!!
Another Dreamcast repaired!
Many thanks sir, you're a lifesaver! ^_^

its tricky...a hair too much it goes super speed up..too far back too slow..its only like a hair difference..
Worked after a couple of tries, thanks. That ribbon cable ended up coming out for me, and getting that thing back in is NOT fun, but doable.
I can vouch this method works. Found my old dreamcast and it wasnt reading disc at first but after following the turtorial its working like a champ. Time for some good ol MvC2 and PowerStone.
I didn’t know Jeff Goldblum played Dreamcast
LOL it does sound like him 😂
Why wouldn't he?
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I hadn’t played my dreamcast in a long time and found it being unable to read the discs. Found this video and you saved the day. Long live Sega 🤘
This actually worked. I thought it was the pins that were dirty on the power. Liked and faved

Good vids like this still around help the gaming community. Thanks, fixed my cast.
Holy crap this fix actually worked for me! Hell yeah!!!! Crazy Taxi here I come
Still works in 2020 thx man!!
Why wouldnt it work this year hahahhahs
crazy taxi time!!! This really helped me Alex. Thank you
I have no idea how I fixed it but I did. Thanks a lot, now I can go back to THPS.
You've just saved my Dreamcast !!!
I can't wait to play Shemue now after all those years 😁
Had a problem with my Dreamcast only reading games when the lid was partially opened, but tightening the potentiometer worked perfectly, in less than 5 minutes. thanks!

Spot on, fixed my Ebay return now I can sell it and save a loss. Thanx.

Dolan, youre a genius!
Thanks!
It kinda worked but then it kinda didn't. Started reading but crashing or having the music cut out after a certain amount of time. Eventually I couldn't seem to find that sweet spot again so now it's not reading at all =(
Worked. Just probably a 5-10 degree (very very slight) turn clockwise.

And it has the same error again?! I think there’s something wrong with the thing that makes the disc spin? I need some help please!!!!
If you're going to block the view or not zoom in at all, you might wanna describe how far you turn the screw. Someone could screw up their system.
I think due to the GD rom drive constantly in motion and vibration of the spinning disc this causes the screw to move over time. The screw only needs to be very slightly off to cause issues.
I appreciate this extremely random and irrelevant content given to me today. Thanks algorithm 👍
Thank you, you guys are a genius, my dreamcast works again
I'll give this a try. I got two recently purchased from internet that are both experiencing this problem. Looks easy.
How’d it go
@@suppaman12 The fix shown in the video has no impact on actual system hardware. Both systems failed, by design. My old Dreamcast worked immediatley.
Thank you. Cleaning the lens fixed mine!
Thank you for this! Tried it out and got my DC to work.
Thx man i forgot this was a way to fix it, i didn't remember the screw of the disc lens until i saw your vid, now playing PSO online again :D
This fix worked perfectly! Thank you so much!!!
It did work! Only come to find out my Dreamcast does not play burned games, it is the September 2000 model have i been lied to??
This worked great for me on a DC I just bought off of eBay; thank you!
For me When I powered it on, The disc reader goes to 1/4 regular reading speed for about 3 seconds then stops for 5 seconds & keeps looping.
This actually worked!!!
What tools you'll need?
Solved my problem, many thanks.
The only thing I didn't see or maybe you mentioned but I didn't hear is how much did you turn it a quarter turn? a half a turn? a full turn???
Thank You! You are a lifesaver.
Thanks dude, this fixed my Dreamcast!
Its honestly a temporary fix. More then likely it's a sign of a dying laser
Whoa easy on that cog, ouch! It helps to grease the gears/cogs with a LITTLE petroleum Jelly. You're adjusting a POT for the laser right now. Increasing/decreasing the resistance. Oh and Great video there slugger!
Literally a live saver thank you it was the screw
Broooooo thank you man!!!!!!! Pfffff ❤️🙏🏻
It kept turning and turning. You don’t show how much you turned it. I turned it clockwise over 50 times. Nothing.
Pretty sure that killed the laser.
Thank you so much!! It worked!!!
Worked for me, thanks
Fixed it for me! Thanks!
Also what if the one original model I had from when I was a kid won't work with VGA boxes?

try getting the PSUs, power supply from ALiexpress or ebay. It might have happened that the capacitors might have leaked and damaged the PSU board.
Thanks it worked for me too!!
Could I try this same method to burned discs as well
Cool dude, it worked!!!! I guess I can now purchase a Dreamshell 😀
My game jet set radio it well load to the loading screen and kick me off to the home screen of the Dreamcast can anybody help me
Thank you so much
You sir have won a follower hehe thank you!
Nice video, Thank you :)
Didn’t work for me.
I know it’s been a long time but I did it and it worked but it broke off the thing so I can never twist it again. Do you think I’m going to need to twist it again in the future?
Ummm is it still working?
Iv adjusted this little fu*ker back and forth for a couple hours and gotten nowhere. Any suggestions anyone?
Trying to fix mine I don’t have that piece on mine least don’t see it
It was in a flood some rust
So I’m not sure if that’s why it don’t read discs
Did all that. But it doesnt want to read the disc. I even turned the screw a bit more and more. And nothing :'(
Thanks a lot
it is just temporary fix & will burn the laser diode even faster
What are you using to turn the screw? Its not a flat head or philips. I cant get it to turn.
Just took mine apart yesterday, a small philips worked fine for all of the screws (including the lasers resistance) just be careful and take it slowly
That is gotta give it a try🤞🏾
Worked
What if it's only certain games that won't read?
Then it's the disc that doesn't read
πολυ καλη κονσολα...αλλα εχει και τα σχετικα θεματα...κυριως με θερμοκρασιες..και σκονη...προσεξτε το..και θα το χαρειτε...
It worked I just had to turn my thing back the clockwise thing
Capacitors bad? After so many yrs.
Check disc first if not help check a laser
Never mind I fixed it!!! Sorry
How did you fix it, Mine did the same thing even after I did this.
Thx bro very cool guy
Thanks for the tip, but I had this disc problem like... 20 years ago
