    When I went to the breeder to look for ASF rats to keep as pets I had my hands in some the tanks, and not one of them tried to bite me. I was picking them up with no problems. I don't know why people say they are so nasty, and mean. This is the second group I purchased now. Maybe the breeder I went to had ones with better temperaments. I ended up buying 4 baby males between 3, and 4 weeks old for only $5 for the group. They are sweet. I am able to pet them, and can pick them up. I think that they can also make very good pets if you get them young enough.

      There are one that are more tame then others. I noticed the white colony I have is way nicer than my then the solid color ones I have.

      I think you gotta remember they haven’t really been over here (the US) nearly as long...I think there is a wide temperament difference in the different lines out there

      I live in Europe and my ASF are friendly as hell. I can touch them, pick them up and pet them. I breed them only for my snakes and cleaning is the only time I interact with them. Some rodents are more defensive than others when having a litter. I have females that don't mind when I come near the litter others would bite me really hard. It's the same for norwegian rats and ASF.

    • @ZenOrcReptiles

      They take roughly 2 1/2 months to reach sexual maturity. I would say 4-5 months to be fully grown.

    Hi. Great videos. At any stage can you mix asf from different colonies together? I'm just trying to cut down on the amount of racks needed to grow out for feeding.

    • @ZenOrcReptiles
      @ZenOrcReptiles  4 года назад

      You can mix young males together, but otherwise I have had issues. You can put young females together, before they become sexually mature. Once you put a male with a mature female they are a colony.

    Hi zen orc reptiles, how do you guys rreat mites in your breeder and feeder rats and ASF?

    • @ZenOrcReptiles
      @ZenOrcReptiles  4 года назад +1

      I used frontline spray for cats and dogs in the past. I have only had to use once and only used it on my breeders and never on babies. Never use it one rats your going to feed your snakes!!! I have only had this issue one time I brought a rat home for a pet store that I thought would be a cool color for my rat collection and it had mites and was sick. I now always quarantine all animals when adding to anything to my rat or reptile rooms!

    When you feed ball pythons ASFs will they still readily take a Norwegian rat in succeeding feedings?

    • @ZenOrcReptiles
      @ZenOrcReptiles  4 года назад +5

      I personally never have had any issues with this, but that being said to be safe I never feed my hatchlings AFS I am going to sale. If I sale a older male or female from my collection I would switch her/him back to normal rats for a month or so just to make sure. Again I have never had a snake that will not take normal rats after eating ASF. I have bought snakes that only eat mice from other breeders. This is why I never feed mice to my Ball Pythons. Hope that helps!

    • @andreheise1170
      @andreheise1170 4 года назад

      It's nearly impossible to switch two of my males (back) to rats. One was fed ASF by the previously owner, the the other got ASF in young age because I preferred to feed a adult prey item instead of a young rat on milk.

    I know they don't smell, would they be fine in a guest bedroom if i take all measures to reduce smell?

    • @ZenOrcReptiles
      @ZenOrcReptiles  5 лет назад +2

      I never had a ASF smell, but they are little escape artists. I am sure they would do good in a guest room. AFS are a good choice, just don't try normal rats though unless you have a well ventilated area.

    They ate through my copper screens, at first they ate their young, or neglected them, they are finally coming around I think...mine are easy to catch vs my Norwegians, ill keep them, but...they eat well, i feed them well, i dont grab them, only by the tail, they will bite me, but i can stick my hand & pet them..also I have a very picky G. Stripe, that will only eat mice, no matter what, but i got her on ASF's, at first i put a few in with the mice, to get the smell, shes eating great, until a month ago..pain in the ass snake, good as a pet only so far..the rest eat well.

    I got my asf rats about a month and a half or two. Two boys four girls and first day not even thirty minutes of being home my cats knocked down the little cage and one boy escaped. Next day he was found dead. So after a while we notice all the girls were pregnant. We went from six to five to thirty eight lol. Still haven't gave it a shot for my ball python to try because he's in brumation but everyone seems to say they love them. Great video you got my sub.
