I think the new pickups sounded clearer on the chords/notes than the originals. Good sound - good choice. Also, the coil-split sound is awesome! Great sounding 'stratish/SRV' playing there! For the knobs, maybe have a set of each color and also for the selector switch - you can change on occasion or mood. Goodness knows, those are some of the cheapest mods you can do for an electric guitar these days. : ) Looking forward to seeing/hearing more from your new workhorse.
Hey Sped! First and foremost Merry Christmas buddy! The new pickups do sound good indeed, and just to be clear I don’t think the original ones sounded ‘bad’ either, especially @ the price on SE’s typically. A friend of mine owns five or six real high end PRS guitars and I play them many times when I’m visiting. They feel great, sound great and look pretty damn great too, however I don’t know what it is but I just don’t bond with them LOL! I’m just at home with a Gibson and in particular the SG model. Great playing as always man, if I see Santa I’m going to insist he brings you down a 61’ SG Standard down your chimney ahah! 🤣🤟
Santa better be bringing me a ‘61 SG and a new bathroom. My list goes on but it’s 2am and I’m getting old. 😴 😂 That’s the beauty of being a guitarist nowadays. There’s the right brand for everyone; people priorities different things. I keep meaning to get my hands on a 594. I’d like to live with one for a while and compare.
Your demo reminds me of why I'm swapping my 85/15 S out of my custom. Yes they sound great for a bunch of tones and styles, but they fall just short for what I'd hoped. The humbucker sound is good, but it could be better in some aspects, the split leaves you wishing for more. Your upgraded pickups have more of that satisfying tone with a definite improvement in the split. It's always subjective, and nobody is right or wrong, just different tastes. The ones that make you enjoy playing are the right ones.
Yeah exactly! And nothing was offensive to the ear; just falling short compared to other more expensive/upgraded instruments I own. It’s a welcome mod and I’m happy. You’ll notice the coil split improvements more than anything on this demo. I mentioned it already; wasn’t expecting the end result at all. Sounds ridiculously good.
I prefer the upgrades, and the comparison bolsters our mutual opinion that the stock pickups aren't clear enough for our taste. Just a side thing here: A month ago I bought a Kingfish signature tele deluxe and I'm in love with it. If you can ever try one, try it.
As you know I’m a huge fan of the PRS SE But have to admit the new pickups add a great punch and new dimension in tone 👍 Horses for courses I guess, I like they both But totally with you with the switching of guitars and the SE then appearing to lack a little something . Tweek Tweek HAHA Find just the same when switching from my SE to my Core cu24 Brilliant playing Sped I could listen to you all day long A brilliant guitar became even more special Hope to see you using it a lot more 💯🎸👌👌👌😎
I'm a new subscriber. I love your tones. This might be the wrong place to request breakdowns but, I found you looking for the best Led Zep instructions, and I say honestly, yours were the best. I've searched your list, but I can't find any Frusciante. What's up with that? Johnny is in the Wheelhouse: Jimi, Jimmy, James, Prince, Niles, Scofield...Can we get a John Frusciante Episode? Thanks in advance. You'd rock it. Thanks.
Mine came with the amber knobs but I put the same ones you have now on it because the finish is the brown sunburst (or black gold as the website states) and it looked weird. The original pickups sounded good, but the new ones are more clear. They have more balls and they just sound more "mature," I guess. That's the best word I can think of.
Your not going to like me for saying this. The original pickups sounded warm and creamy, whereas the Buzztones in comparison were obviously hotter, but I found them nasal in tone. Of course it's horses for courses, the choice is yours.
Totally welcome the opinion. There’s definitely a noticeable difference in output. Hotter for sure. I always felt like when I plugged my PRS in after anything else I had to spend ages tweaking things and it sounded a bit weak and brittle in comparison. Obviously as a standalone, if it was your main instrument, everything would be relevant to the PRS but, I always felt like it was letting the side down if that makes sense? I like the mid punch it has now. 🤝🏻
@@SpedSpedding Wonderful. My vote is to go back to the amber knobs. I think your instinct is correct on that matter. I also really like the PRS vintage style tuners. Maybe so cream button tuners would be cool at some point. Very nice choices. The new pickups sound so bitchin, man. Nice work!
Sped, the Buzztones rock and are more defined. The original ones are warmer however for the style of music you play the Buzztones are a large cut above and I think you made an excellent decision! Rock On Sped!
Buzztone pickups sounded better across the board the split tones and middle position were much better than stock. The amber knobs made the purple pop more.
Hi Dude, Thanks 💓 for the fantastic work your providing to the world 🌎. Could you show me how to play too rolling stoned by Robin Trower? Please 🙏. Very grateful 🙏. Peter.
Funds did not run low at all. I just love the look. Always have. And I like that my Les Paul, Hagstrom and PRS all have the same configuration now: one brushed nickel and one open. Hot rod.
Unfair comparison because the long sleeves were affecting tonal resonance. You'd have to be wearing the same clothes. Apart from that the tones from the Buzztones are def more pronounced, less mellow. Can't remember if you changed any of the wiring.?
Seems new ones have more output but matche each other from this point which is good I would say maybe as a result they are more expressive besides the rest of specs The thing is only what you like more does matter not us So congrats 👍
I agree. It’s always so personal but I also believe that my community here share a good ear for tone. For me the difference is considerable and I’m happy. Especially the coil split. Night and day.
Hello Mr. Sped Spedding. Have You got a band? I visit friends in Latchford from time to time (Pulp Friction, Tarantino Movies cover band, Very Good, I digress).. I'd love to see you in full attack if You ever do gigs round that way. Regards from Germany. My apologies if this info is common knowledge on your other socials. I don't do them. Head in the sand. Happy Chrimbo to Ya too. And Gab. Can't forget Gab. 😁
You can really hear the difference.. PRS pups sound good but the Buzztones certainly give it a richer and fuller tone… I like the black knobs, the guitar has a dark and brooding vibe, if it was me I’d swap out the rings and tip for black too.. hey you were even dressed fully in black.. subconscious? I think not.. the guitar was talking to you 😮😉
A few people have mentioned the same thing about the rings, but I worry it’ll look too dark without any light hitting the body. The purple can already look quite dark in the shade. That said, the pickups are such a breath of fresh air; it’s a guitar I love playing but never end up tracking with. Knowing me, though, I’ll probably have black rings and amber knobs on it in six months anyway. 😂
I actually hear the opposite. I feel like they have way more mid punch whilst retaining clarity. Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion! There’s no wrong answer. We all like what we like. 🤝🏻
it is freaking night and day man... it is not even close! great upgrade, congrats!
You got that right! Thanks for watching. 🔥
Amazing tone the Buzztone pickups!!!
Tell me about it ! Brought it to life. 🔥
Beautiful blues 💙
The upgrade is more pleasing my ears. :)
As is this comment. 🤝🏻
Nice articulation on those pickups, felt the hammer of the gods on the bridge buzztone on Goodtmes/Bad times. Tele on steroids indeed!
Yeah it does that kind of sound very well.
Gorgeous playing, looking forward to your side-by-side of a core model with an uncovered PRS 59/09 ;)
😏😏😏 thanks pal. Appreciate you.

Maybe I should have a Rolex type draw that I pull out with a fine selection of knobs and switch tips for the weekend. 😂
I think the black knobs looks great! I think black plastics would look really good with that finish
That’s cool. I just fear the rings would make the purple look too dark.

hard to tell which one would track better from this perspective, I dig the mid-range on the new set .
The Buzztone pop more and perhaps are crisper. I think they both sound great and I would be happy with either.

Exactly this Chris. It sits in the rack as an equal now in my mind. I wouldn’t hesitate to grab it for tracking.

Exactly what I was gonna say. I would put the originals back in I’m afraid also the new lampshade knobs look much more classy than the orange ones.
Warm and creamy. I agree.
Ya dude, dig the clear and black knobs....looks good 🤘 and those pickups sound amazing and clear. The originals dont sound bad at all, but dang 🤘
Oh wicked; I do like them. Just weird adjusting to the smallest thing. 😂
is it worth changing frets for stainless steel on les paul?
Happy Holidays, Sped. Really enjoyed this guitar makeover series. Do you find that your changes have rekindled your flame for this guitar?
Same to you! Always loved this guitar but now it’s in the mix for recording and performing etc. 🔥

@@SpedSpedding yes, more appealing than the amber knobs, to me anyway...

New ones are richer with more clarity too. Did funds run low when it came to cover for bridge? Black pickup rings might be a visual improvement 🤷♂

Hard to put into words, but the Buzztones sound more...... authentic, both ancient and modern, more depth, more tone, more rounded✌️💜👍😊
You put it into many beautiful words. 🤝🏻🥃
@@SpedSpedding 😀✌️🙏💜🎄🎄
The Buzztones are thin sounding when compared to the originals. The lower-mids are completely lost in the Buzztones.

Buztones sound a lot better - far more clarity and Presence, with a capitol P in the zep sense.
Glad you rate them too!
First 🎉
Smashed it. 🔥
That was phenomenal playing... with talent like yours, it's difficult to hear which pickups sound better
I prefer the originals ones kkkkkk
That’s cool, thanks for watching! 🤝🏻
its a tie!!
I like both but I think PRS got it right though. 9 out of 10 cats couldn’t tell the difference
As in just their design is good?
Ha ha.....just watched your Joe Perry vid where you are playing your Les Paul and i think that guitar sounds better than this one either way
Original and go back to amber knobs. 🤓🤘👍🔥
Might have to get amber as my weekend knobs. 😂
Prefer upgrades. Mud free.
Why not get some 58/85 LTs or core 85/15 pickups? Try core pickups
I’ve got 57 and 58 PAF’s in two other guitars made by Tom so felt right to try these in the PRS.
Bloody man......keep the originals.......the others are too hairy i might say
😂 I like the new ones way more. Cool that we have different opinions though.
@@SpedSpedding .....let me ask you a question......which ones felt better when playing?
