Thank you! This was surprisingly easy for last minute Halloween costume for my 9 year old. For cardboard I used cereal box..much thinner than cardboard but still worked fine.
i know this is a "cheap" one, but i looks so good, you could also apply some fiberglass, or the resin cast , even some acrylic (liquid, the one to make fake nails) and you would get a smoother helmet, i mean so it look entirely like one piece
My daughter wants to dress her American Girl doll as an X-wing pilot after seeing Poe Dameron's fancy flying on Takodana- I've managed to find a jumpsuit pattern and an old orange blouse to use for the main part, but I was stressing about the helmet- until tada! This vid! Now I've found a fitting doll helmet on ebay for 4$ to start from, and I have everything else on hand. Thanks, Dustin, you're a real inspiration!! :D My daughter and I are going to have a LOT of fun!

The black series one comes out on the 30th, it's pretty cheap for a replica. If you want to make one, pepakura is your only option if you want it to look good.

I realise this is 4 years later for you, but I just did some googling, and I’m looking at trying a moped/motorcycle/motorbike helmet. You can get ones with visors that you can take off, or there are ‘open face’ helmets- which might mean you have a clear plastic visor, or you can take that out or colour it with cellophane or something.
this is probably the best x-wing pilot helmet I've ever seen, and I can actually afford it. I was so ready to give up on this year's early halloween costume/new cosplay, but something told me "keep looking, girl". THANK YOU!! I already have the tape and spray paint from other projects/cosplays, I just have to get the helmet, and luckily, there's one for less then $15 at the walmart near me! BLESS YOU lol
It looks great and he did a really good job explaining everything but as with most of his projects it doesn't look "professional" , everything's just a bit slap dash and thrown together..... I know it's "affordable" but I make cheap things ALL THE TIME and still manage to make things look good quality even if I got my materials at pound land ..... I think it just comes down to the amount of effort made.....

Thank you so much for this tutorial.I never heard of you or your profile.I just saw it popped up on youtube.I always go to comic con or events happening in my area and when it comes to star wars nobody ever dresses up as an X wing.Its always Jedi's,han solo's,chewy,etc.Well anyways after doing this project I learned that the football drinking helmet is alot easier than a normal baseball helmet.Because the baseball helmet you have to use a dremal to cut that top piece off and sand it.The football helmet doesn't have that.Thank you so much again for doing this tutorial.Can't wait to wear mine on Star Wars Rogue One Movie or other star wars events that will happen this year.

You can colour in regular safety goggles with an orange sharpie too - I've done it before and the effect is honestly really similar!

These techniques are also good if you want to make a Mega man helmet, the similarities are remarkable
if you do everything before white spraypaint you can paint the cardboard light blue and have a megaman helmet
I may look at my local thrift stores for a basball helmet. I’m sure those will work as good bases for any helmet.

good idea would have been to check a cheap tube of printable bathroom caulk ($4 at home depot) and cover that line between the helmet and cardboard.
