He should have found wound badges etc. Would be interesting to know how these were dispersed during the war. Maybe some adjutant carried them around in an envelope and tossed it as he was being captured.

    The 2nd class Iron Cross wasn't worn on the field uniform, only the 1st class and Knights cross were. Instead, it was represented by wearing the ribbon only through the tunic button hole or as a ribbon bar over the left chest pocket. The actual cross for the 2nd class was awarded in the field however by placing the cross through the button hole suspended by its ribbon. After the award ceremony, the cross itself was removed and not worn on the combat tunic. They would have been in light blue paper award packets unless removed by the presenter before bestowing them. Of course the packets, if originally present, have long since deteriorated to nothing as have the ribbons. These were probably intended for an awards ceremony in the field that never happened since they were all found in the same hole.

    I found this video again, and realized something about the Iron Crosses. The Knights Cross can be distinguished from the 1st and 2nd Class Crosses by the orientation of the attached loop, or its absence. The 2nd Class loop's openings face the sides of the cross. The 1st Class has no top loop (there will be a clasp or loops on the back for mounting), and the Knight has a loop where the openings face the crosses' front and back. All these differences conform to how each award is worn. The first cross you find is a 2nd Class... the rest I didn't get a good look at, but I suspect they are all 2nd Class. I'm reasonably certain that an adjutant or aide assigned to a high-ranking officer was charged with keeping the crosses for on-the-spot awards when the commander was touring hospitals and line units. Alternately, an awards ceremony was planned but never happened. The crosses were buried/abandoned for one of two reasons... to prevent the identification of the bearer, or to prevent the enemy from easy access to souvenirs. It's possible the awards were lost, but far more likely they were abandoned. Last, I can't believe you metal detect in that weather, and can't understand why the humid ground isn't frozen solid at those temperatures.

    The round ring was your first clue it was an Iron Cross, 2nd Class (the size is also different). A Knight's Cross has a different "loop" the ribbon would go through. Still, how exciting to find pieces of history like that--makes you wonder why they were buried like that. Well done!

    Man do I wish I could detect amd dig an area like this. I'd totally spend my spare time trying to perserve such historical objects.
    Only detectable objects in my area maybe from when the US had a base stationed a couple hundred km from here.
    I am however just a couple hours south of where the Vikings discovered North America(settle down Columbus, you were not the first white to be here). The area is one that has continuous wind bombardment carrying ocean salt with it so doubt any Viking metal would survive. There's plenty of bog areas that would perserve any artifacts but considering the Beothuk's were the majority of tye population here and were the actual demise of the Norseman's attempt at a settlement. I wish they would have lasted though, would have been great to had that as heritage, but thats just from a Viking at heart.
    Why did their settlement not make it, well its -33 celcius here today with winds. I dont think I could make it here either without my modern wood/oil combo furnace.

      I just posted that my grand father flew with the Escadrille and witnessed from the air a massive Russian assault squad captured about 190 German soldiers circa 1915 and about 40 of those German soldiers were officers. The Germans were stripped of their uniforms lined up and shot then dumped in one mass grave just outside of Berlin. Part of the German regiment was escorting evacuating civilians mostly women and children that were also slaughtered at different site and dumped in another mass grave site. Seeing this hoard of crosses and the Russian 7.62 shell and the charcoal which was probably used to burn the uniforms makes me think this guy is smack on top of where all those bodies are at in that grave site. My grand father helped German people search for this site circa 1955 without much luck he still had contact with many people he met during that war until his death in 1995. Yes they found weapons and helmets but not the grave site. Nobody has until this guy came along. The incident is documented all the pilots filed written reports on what happened.

    The way to find out which one you have is to measure them all. A knights cross is bigger that the first class and a first class is bigger than the second class but the Grand Cross is bigger than all of them but there have been only three ever issued. Two were during WWI and Goering awarded himself with another during WWII.

  • @MLA56
    @MLA56 5 лет назад +1

    I don't think they tried to get rid of them. It's more likely this was a headquarters location. German higher headquarters (battalion and higher) usually had a lot of EKIIs and possibly some EKIs at regimental or division level to award them in the field. Also, Germans in the field didn't wear the cross part of EKIIs. They only wore the ribbon through a buttonhole on the jackets.

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  5 лет назад

      The location indicates no headquarters or any kind of position at all, but it is in an greater area of were the remains of the 9th army was annihilated. They were forced to fight till the last man( it is mentioned in the movie the downfall).
      Those cheaply produced EK2 were given out to especially young soldiers like candy to hold up the "moral" of the troop.
      My theory why I found thirteen crosses in the middle of the forrest is that: after it was all nearly over a lot of soldiers/officers came to reason and tried to save their skin by removing their rank insignia and all items that would give them away as decision makers to blend in with the mass of ordinary soldiers.(like Himmler did).
      So what do you do with a lot of yet not awarded bravery medals in the face of certain capture by the one enemy you fear the most cause you devastated his country slaved it´s population and starved over the three quarters of their pows?

    • @MLA56
      @MLA56 5 лет назад

      @@KlugscheisserDan I agree they were unissued ones. Yes, I know they gave out EKIIs to almost everyone in the closing days of the war. One old veteran I was friends with in the 1980s was irritated by it because he felt it cheapened the awards other soldiers had earned earlier. He was an NCO and Oberfeldwebel at the end with EKII and EKI, AND a Deutsches Kreuz in Gold. Emil Filsinger. I was also friends with a Ritterkreuztraeger, Heinz Ballreich, in the same little town. I was a career US soldier and already a combat veteran myself back then, so I was accepted into their ,Stammtisch' group as a younger Brother Veteran. I learned a LOT about the reality of the war in the German Army from them. I already knew it from the American side.

    Be careful what you say, write or listen to... Next I'm thinking, they'll be controlling our thoughts. I must be old because the stuff I was taught growing up was wrong, they now say is right, and everything that was right is now wrong. It makes my head hurt, lol

    Goring promised them food, he gave them Iron Crosses. Looks like an air drop, it would seem to be more mixed (a mix of different awards) if it was a site the Red Army removed them from POW's. All the same thing would be possible air drop.

    I reckon they hadn't even been handed out, an officer in charge of giving them out has burnt them whilst on the run. You wouldn't have had that many Iron Crosses given out in one platoon. What dates were on them?

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  4 года назад

      That´s what I think too their dates are all 1939 but from the poor quality you can easily determine them as last days of war effort to hold up the morale especially for very young soldiers.
