I really enjoyed the video Thomas, and I think you did VERY well in Zion. Both scenes turned out great, and I enjoyed seeing what a fresh set of eyes sees in a place like Zion. I've been there so many times that I wonder how it shapes my own perception of the place, but you jumped in there and immediately started producing quality work, which is certainly the mark of a great photographer. On a side note, I certainly hope you didn't give the hobo that wandered into your video any spare change.
Ha! Thanks Ben, you're too kind. It's a shame you couldn't make it for a drink that night, but I'm sure we will cross paths again. I look forward to the rest of your 2016 Fall series.
To all 76.000 subscribers: please pay Ben Horne's channel a visit. Thomas knows what, and who, he is talking about when he sometimes mentions him. Same as Thomas is, Ben is a very passionate photographer, a great storyteller, and outstanding videographer. And again, same as Thomas is, he is a very likeable chap.
I think I have now managed to watch all your videos on here, I am totally hooked, I class myself as an amateur photographer and love being out and about taking photographs, your series has encouraged me to go further and look broader, thank you and keep making great videos......
Ah, clever, but not clever enough as I still couldn't get it to work. It's a shame because as you round the bend, the yellow tree just smacks you in the face. I was sure I would be able to make an image, but sadly not.
Watching your videos outside in a cold with only a tripod , camera and landscape is twice more enjoyable than in comfort zone! You're my inspiration , thank you
I always love, and am amazed, at how you find such beautiful cameos in such wild and amazing places and instil the feel and grandeur into such a small part. It is always a pleasure watching you and hearing your thought processes as you search for 'that' image. I don't photograph landscapes, they frighten me, but I truly get how much pleasure they give you. Another fabulous video thanks for taking the time to show these magnificent places.
Hey Thomas, since I discovered your videos in March, I must say that I loved every single one of them. In my opinion, the thing I like most aren't your pictures (which are awesome indeed) or your technical skills. It's about the passion and the optimistic feeling you give in every single video. This is rare and absolutely great! Keep up the good work and all the best from Germany!
Thomas, you're such an inspiration for me, i'm a newbee in photography and i planed my very first phototrip just because you gave me the motivation by your videos.... THANK YOU from a belgian war veteran....
I was there a few days ago and was blown away at the grandeur and beauty of Zion. I'm a bit surprised that you couldn't find more compositions, would've loved to see more images through your eyes.
Thanks Thomas, its because of you that I have taken an interest in landscape photography. Looking to get into cityscapes in the future. Looking forward to the next video.
Love wandering Zion and if I get a few photos I like then I consider it a major success! Thanks for the recommendation on Ben's channel. He has a refreshing approach.
Tom - so envious that you've been in Zion and the US at this stunning time of year. Seeing Ben Horne in your vid reminded me that you'd me pointed to his channel in the past - went and took a look and his vlogs from this year in Zion are just as inspiring as yours, coming back year after year must allow him to know the right times and places to be there, and large format must make it even more difficult. Feeling really inspired now, and hopeful for getting at least a couple of images this weekend when I head to Southern Germany for the Christmas Markets with my wife - Neuschwanstein Castle at Fussen is something I've wanted to get an image of for a while - now if the weather would just surprise me with a dusting of snow ...... Keep up with the vlog content - you make us all continue to strive to up our game and capture the wonders of this world.
Thanks a lot. You should consider a trip to Zion, it's insanely accessible. Cheap flight to Vegas, hire a car, 2hr drive - Boom, you're there. Germany is beautiful, especially Neuschwanstein Castle. In the right conditions, you can make something really special. Ben's videos are great and inspired me to make the trip. I'm envious of the quality he gets from large format. It's insane.
I do enjoy your videos. I feel like I'm right there walking with you, going through many of the same thought processes about visualizing (or pre-visualizing) an image. You have a nice talent for communicating and conveying your photography planning..
I've been following you here on RUclips for a while now and thanks to you discovered Ben Horne's channel for me yesterday. Since I left a comment there which includes you, I want to share a similar comment and thanks here, too. I love both, your photography as well as the way you are telling stories in your videos! I do landscape and travel photography myself as an amateur, not too shabby but on a much lower level, and love how you are able to show and share the fascination of landscape photography. This truly is a great inspiration, definitely for me. I also like the way you appreciate nature - it is not all about photos, it's also about being out there in the elements. And it's also great to see that not everything is always running perfectly as you would like things to be - and how you stay positive and make the best out of it. I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos and photos. Thank you!
Hey, thanks for watching and thank you for your comment. Ben's is a great channel, so I'm glad to hear that you also watch his stuff. You are right, it's not always about a photo which makes an outing a success, sometimes it's just about being out.
Nice to see you and Ben in the same frame, even if it was just a second. You two are by far the biggest inspirational photographers for me. Keep up the great work. Oh, and your book? It's bloody brilliant.
That's very kind thank you. It's shame that me and Ben couldn't hang out more. I finally caught up with him on my last day, 30 mins before sunset and I still hadn't taken a photo. This is why we didn't do something bigger together. Next time.
I've been watching Ben's channel for a long while now and came across yours as he mentioned you in a recent video. I've been backtracking your videos and was happy to see you two in the same frame. Great humour the two of you and hopefully more collaborations or a simple chat would be great to see.
The flash of Ben in your vid was brilliant!!! You two are my heroes!! I am hoping to be back in Zion in July and will try out some new spots to try and miss the crowds. Best, Bob
My daughter lives in Belfast, and we've been to Scotland twice. If and when we get there again, it would be wonderful to meet you. Yeah, the summer trip is going to be hot, camping on my motorcycle with a couple of friends. Will be carrying a complete kit and tripod in my trailer attached to the bike. Don't ya want to come for a visit???? Best, Bob
I found your videos 3 weeks ago, and I believe that I have seen them all by now. You really are an inspiriation. I have learnt a lot just by watching your videos. I myself is more into wildlife photography, but you inspired me to take more landscape images. Thank you, and keep up the good work. I´m subscribing to your channel.
What a wonderful place Tom, the colours and textures look amazing. I relate to the struggle you had in finding a composition you were happy with, in such beautiful place that you were clearly impressed with. It’s funny how sometimes it’s not always easy to find an image. I think the point you made is a great one, some places require more time to explore and become familiar with the location, the light, the shapes, the formations of the landscape and the compositions on offer. It reminds me of some of the place we have here in Australia. While some locations scream ‘landscape image’ others require a little more time to discover the images that can be captured. Another great adventure mate, Zion is definitely on my list, thanks for bringing us along!
I know exactly what you mean. I can find myself blown away with a landscape and then really struggle to actually make an image work. Zion is the best example of this, but it's so satisfying to capture something that remotely represents the beauty of the area, you'll never fully get it over in a photograph though.
6:40 Dang skippy. Better luck next time Thomas. I've had the fortune of shooting Zion many times. You were on the right track on Zion's eastern plateau. With the flat light, I'm surprised you didn't do more with the textures and cross bedding in the rocks and formations there. Many moons ago, I spent a week there with some very talented photographers from out of state, and I think we saw the sun a couple of times in that week. We we're all still able to capture some wonderful images by going tight and focusing on texture and contrast. With a little hiking away from the road, there are Many Pools and pot holes that you can work with that give excellent compositions...
A couple of My goals in Outdoor photography are : finding peace in the surrounding landscape and that affords a successful hunt for the zone ,as You refer to. Great videos enjoy them a lot.
Hi Thomas, have enjoyed watching your inspiring videos for past few months; so much so I'm starting my own photo tour of Antelope, Bryce, and Zion, starting this Saturday. Keep up the great work!
Still catching up on past videos. Always a pleasure, I guess the biggest lesson for me is to look and think more and snap less. I try to go out every day - old man fighting the ageing process - and usually take my camera to make the walks more interesting. I usually end up with lots of shots which are OK, some good enough to share with friends, but scarcely ever a wow shot. Now I think you have taught me one of the reasons why. Others may have to do with lack of technical and artistic know-how but I can work on those too.
If you're in need of a new tripod head, you may want to look at the Markins Q3i (and Q3i-P if you want one with a panorama quick shoe). Insanely sturdy tripod head, carries a lot of weight easily and with a half-turn of the knob unlike a lot of others where you need several rotations to really lock it. Also very light-weight and small in size.
After watching the trilogy of Zion videos I was thinking 'ah man, it's a shame that Thomas didn't get the best out of the 3 days', but then I thought 'actually, this guy got to spend 3 days in one of my favourite national parks in the world'. Great lesson learnt from these videos - It's about enjoying your surroundings, even if you don't get that picture you wanted. Awesome videos mate, keep 'em coming!
Hey, thanks a lot. it is a shame that I didn't get the light in the Narrows, but I still massively enjoyed my time in Zion and I'm more than happy with what I came away with. I like this think this was just a taster session & I'll be back for the main course next time!!
I love your work Tom! I have lost track of how many times I have watched your videos, I look forward to seeing more in the future. Best wishes from Australia
You need to travel to the Northeast Georgia Mountains when you come back. Stunning colors during the fall of the year and the mountains are stunning. I truly live in one of the most beautiful locations and love sharing it with anyone and everyone. Union County is the way to go!
Thanks for the video Thomas, definitely your most bonkers one to date. It's a frustrating and often dissapointing pastime when conditions and lack of time conspire against us. It does make the rewarding times that much better because of it though!
Great video as usual! I gotta get to Zion. Made it to Arches and Canyonlands earlier this year, but Zion is on 'the list'. Your videos always give me something to think about, or look at differently, the next time I go out.
Your ability to connect with you viewers is a true gift. Thank you for sharing that gift. You have inspired me to take my 80D off of automatic and try different settings and spending more time composing. Do you ever sell any of your photographs? Looking forward to the next video.
That is a good move, Bailey. Get off auto, look closer at what your looking at in the first place and try new things. I am having a new website built, but it has been delayed. On the new website will be a print shop with a select amount available. Most likely be January now. Thanks a lot!
You are quickly turning into my favorite landscape photographer. You’re inspiring me to make my photos better! I know you aren’t about tutorials, but you’re definitely teaching me and inspiring me! Thank you! P.S. I’m the one with the Gollum meme today on Twitter. Lol
Thomas, so glad I discovered you mate, watching your amazing videos has made me realize just how very important composition is, its not quantity but quality which matter above anything else. Just as an aside, another thing which is very apparent from watching your videos is, to go where you go you've got to be pretty fit. (Makes me feel a bit inadequate). I'm now a firm fan . Cheers Terry
Thanks a lot. Sometimes I struggle to articulate why I like a subject; the dry bush was a great example of me desperately trying to explain why it appealed to me. I need to be more poetic.
I an age of selfies and anything goes on Instagram, the artistic insight is much appreciated. Our society is all instant gratification without stopping to observe the details that surround us and make the world totally awesome. I hope that your continued videos will inspire more people to slow down and look around more. I know you have awaken a part of my photography that has been forgotten for some time.
HAHAHA! When I saw you and Ben published Zion videos near the same time I was hopeful that had a meet up. I've been watching Ben's videos for years. Nice work in Zion Thomas always enjoy your images.
Great stuff, Tom. I've been a fan for awhile but was looking for tips on Zion. I happen to live in Utah and visit Zion fairly frequently but wanted tips from a pro. Thanks always for your excellent commentary and instruction. Next time you're in Utah, let me know...I can show you some hidden gems. Cheers!
I love Zion. I use to live a few hours from there and could go for a day trip or a weekend. I think Zion seems more personal than Yosemite. What I mean is that Yosemite is much wider and open. Zion is much narrower and it feels more personal to me. Great video and it makes me want to get back to Zion.
I’m visiting Zion in May and cannot wait now. Primarily it’s a walking, exploring, male bonding type trip but looking forward to taking some very mediocre photos along the way too. Really enjoying working my way through your videos, keep up the great work.
another enjoyable vid Thomas thx alot. really good to see you met Ben Horne. I hope you got to have a good chat. look forward to seeing your next adventure.
Yeah that is a shame but a good chance of meeting him again when you go back to Zion eh! I am so glad you recommended him a while back,i really enjoy his videos.
Lol! When you said you were struggling to find a composition I thought to myself he's going to find a lone tree somewhere 😄 Nice to follow you on your adventures, Thomas, thanks for sharing.
I'm most surprised you found the compositions in the trees, not the sandstone, which is what draws my eye. I expect that your contrasting the curves and color of the trees against the neutral linear background is what makes them so effective. Very nice work, as usual.
Always love your content, but found this one oddly inspirational. I say this because at 6:06 when you are walking away from your composition, we see the tree up against that rocks and that is something I would have likely walked right by. This is a prime example of the importance of paying attention to every detail around you.
I have falling in love with your videos. Although i do not own a DSLR yet. I plan on getting one soon. I never thought i would get into photography. Cheers!
Zion is one of the most photographically stunning place I have been. But it's the most frustrating place as you just found out. Every image is a struggle. Many of the parks in and around Zion ( in my opinion ) are far more friendly in a photo sense. Every year Ben goes back to the same places and does videos about the struggle.
I really enjoyed the video Thomas, and I think you did VERY well in Zion. Both scenes turned out great, and I enjoyed seeing what a fresh set of eyes sees in a place like Zion. I find them to be quite different but thanks for heads up
Completely agree, not only are they great photographers, but their video skills and ability to tell a story is impressive!
It´s nice to see you here Andrew. That shows me I´m following the right channels in RUclips
I think I have now managed to watch all your videos on here, I am totally hooked, I class myself as an amateur photographer and love being out and about taking photographs, your series has encouraged me to go further and look broader, thank you and keep making great videos......
Ha! I saw that same tree next to the sandstone and struggled as well to find a good composition. Clever idea to try from above! Well done. Tony
Ah, clever, but not clever enough as I still couldn't get it to work. It's a shame because as you round the bend, the yellow tree just smacks you in the face. I was sure I would be able to make an image, but sadly not.
hahah oh man, when Ben walked true the screen whahahaha did not see it coming. perfectly timed execution , BRILLIANT!
Watching your videos outside in a cold with only a tripod , camera and landscape is twice more enjoyable than in comfort zone!
You're my inspiration , thank you
Another lovely video Thomas

That was classic! My two favorite vlog/photographers with a sense of humor! Brilliant!
Glad you liked it.

Love it!! Really liked Ben's little appearance too :-D Crackin touch :-)
thanks.
I live in Southeast Colorado and your take on the "chaotic landscape" is very helpful. Thanks so much!
Great work ! Wonderful video !
Hi Tom. I can't think of a more beautiful & relaxing way to start my day than to watch this video. Thankyou for filming & posting onto the Tube.
I could think of one or two, but i agree, this is a good way to start also :)
I've been binging on your videos. Love how you describe each of your shoots. The ups and downs. Thanks for keeping us inspired.
That's awesome, thanks for letting me know.
Ha!, love the cameo appearance by Mr. Ben Horne...two thumbs up.
As soon as you started in talking about needing someone to help i was looking for Ben to walk through the shot. :)
Thanks for sharing your journey in Zion. It's one of my favorites also, and yes, better than Yosemite by far. Glad you ran into Ben...
Thanks for watching and yes, it was better than Yosemite.
Love wandering Zion and if I get a few photos I like then I consider it a major success! Thanks for the recommendation on Ben's channel. He has a refreshing approach.
His stuff is great. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
I got so happy seeing Ben pass through the frame!

Thomas Heaton Aaaah. That 30 minute panic 😀
I've been watching Ben's channel for a long while now and came across yours as he mentioned you in a recent video. I've been backtracking your videos and was happy to see you two in the same frame. Great humour the two of you and hopefully more collaborations or a simple chat would be great to see.
Well said Thomas. I'm with you.
Always enjoy your videos from the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Zion is a pretty sweet National Park!
I just thought "it would be great for him to know Ben personally" -- tada, there he his, walks by. loved it. 😂
The flash of Ben in your vid was brilliant!!! You two are my heroes!! I am hoping to be back in Zion in July and will try out some new spots to try and miss the crowds. Best, Bob
Enjoy, Bob. I wish I was coming with you.
Best, Bob

Thank You for your inspiration! I enjoy the locations, artistry, production quality of the videos and advice on your craft.
Thank you for watching and for your kind comment. All the best.
Just loving your channel. You bring the reality of being a landscape photographer, which is very different of what people think. Keep going!
Glad you got to enjoy my favorite place to photograph!
It's now one of my favourites too.
The next time you make it to Zion you might want to check out the Subway. Its Amazing!!
Thanks for taking the time to respond!
A couple of My goals in Outdoor photography are : finding peace in the surrounding landscape and that affords a successful hunt for the zone ,as You refer to. Great videos enjoy them a lot.
Great video work. Absolutely hilarious to see Ben Horne's cameo; he's "Mr. Zion Times Ten" to the rest of us. Can't wait for your next adventure!
Hi Thomas, have enjoyed watching your inspiring videos for past few months; so much so I'm starting my own photo tour of Antelope, Bryce, and Zion, starting this Saturday. Keep up the great work!
Still catching up on past videos. Always a pleasure,
I guess the biggest lesson for me is to look and think more and snap less.

I liked Bryce Canyon and Arches NP amazing rock formations; though all the parks in the grand circle are splendid.
After watching the trilogy of Zion videos I was thinking 'ah man, it's a shame that Thomas didn't get the best out of the 3 days', but then I thought 'actually, this guy got to spend 3 days in one of my favourite national parks in the world'.
That's very kind, thank you.
You need to travel to the Northeast Georgia Mountains when you come back. Stunning colors during the fall of the year and the mountains are stunning. I truly live in one of the most beautiful locations and love sharing it with anyone and everyone. Union County is the way to go!
Have you considered shooting at night? Maybe get some photos of stars over a great landscape? Or maybe do some light painting?
I've seen in one of his videos, or on his flickr page, a few night time shots. Ones even been published.
He did it already, check out the old photos on his website or flickr!
I'd really love to see more! I suppose it's quite challenging making videos of this quality, like these, at night.
I don't do it much any more, other than the aurora. I prefer early morning/late evening. Unfortunately I can't have my cake and eat it.
As always Thomas, love the videos! Look forward to the next one.
Thanks for the video Thomas, definitely your most bonkers one to date. It's a frustrating and often dissapointing pastime when conditions and lack of time conspire against us. It does make the rewarding times that much better because of it though!
Thanks and I agree with you totally about it being frustrating and disappointing at times.
Brilliant work again, always look out for the next one, perhaps a little longer?
Great video as usual! I gotta get to Zion. Made it to Arches and Canyonlands earlier this year, but Zion is on 'the list'. Your videos always give me something to think about, or look at differently, the next time I go out.
That's great to hear, thank you. Zion is amazing, but make sure you give yourself more than 3 days.
Headed there for the christmas break and hope to see the landscape dusted in snow. This was a great intro to the place and what to shoot :)
Your videos are getting me back into photography. Thank you.
I even watch all the advertising's that come on your videos...!!! I love your work..
Your ability to connect with you viewers is a true gift. Thank you for sharing that gift. You have inspired me to take my 80D off of automatic and try different settings and spending more time composing.
Do you ever sell any of your photographs? Looking forward to the next video.

if you make it back to Zion be sure to hit the Kolob Canyon section to the northwest. beautiful and almost no crowds.
I have heard this before. Hopefully next time will be a longer trip so I can explore further. Thanks
That "messy" image, reminds me a lot of abstract art, which is why I think it works.
I think I need to look closely at it and see why it does work. It shouldn't work, but it does.
You are quickly turning into my favorite landscape photographer. You’re inspiring me to make my photos better! I know you aren’t about tutorials, but you’re definitely teaching me and inspiring me! Thank you! P.S. I’m the one with the Gollum meme today on Twitter. Lol
hey Thomas, im really inspired to your videos, it push me to do my dream, landscape photography and hiking. youre the best!

Just as an aside, another thing which is very apparent from watching your videos is, to go where you go you've got to be pretty fit. (Makes me feel a bit inadequate). I'm now a firm fan . Cheers Terry
Always a pleasure to watch your videos!
Always a pleasure to have you watch.
it´s really nice to see the story behind the photos. Love it
Thank you.
Thanks for being my inspiration. I love your works and more over I like your attitude. Best of luck for your future endeavours.....
Love your content. You’re very entertaining and charming. So much fun to watch. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Rusty - Lakeland, FL
That's very kind of you to say, thanks a lot!
That teaser for the next video hooked me! On the edge of my seat for that video to drop! You're a champ Thomas love what you're doing.
Thanks a lot, Morgan. Next week should be an enjoyable watch.
I love your insight into the image and the observation process you go through to get a great image rather than a bunch of ok images.
Thanks a lot!
Thanks for being SO inspirational.
Thank you for watching!
The Zen Zone in Zion! :-)
Cheers!
Thanks for the recommended video, Peter Mathis' work is superb.
It's a great video.
OMG is the next video on Hawaii! I've been waiting for that one!
Me too. Excited to see it
Your Zion series has me eager to visit. I loved that cameo, well done!
Do it! Thanks a lot.
I’m visiting Zion in May and cannot wait now. Primarily it’s a walking, exploring, male bonding type trip but looking forward to taking some very mediocre photos along the way too. Really enjoying working my way through your videos, keep up the great work.
Beautiful! I'm trying to plan a trip here next year :) I have never been either. I will definitely reasearch a little than normal. Thanks for posting!
I enjoyed your time in Zion! Thanks for sharing 🍁
Great video, lovin' your calendar...get to look at it again next year! ;)
you did an amazing job in Zion eventhough you couldn't have the best light. good luck for your second trip there
that's very kind, thank you.
Often times there is great beauty to be found in the chaos of nature. To the natural world it's not chaos, it's just what is.
Excellent production mate and left on a cliffhanger for next week! Wednesday is known to me as you video upload day now!
Great series mate. some cracking pictures there, I am wishing i could get there one day.
Thanks a lot!
another enjoyable vid Thomas thx alot. really good to see you met Ben Horne. I hope you got to have a good chat. look forward to seeing your next adventure.
Thanks, we had a good chat, but it's shame that he arrived in the park as i was leaving.
Yeah that is a shame but a good chance of meeting him again when you go back to Zion eh! I am so glad you recommended him a while back,i really enjoy his videos.
Beautiful shots, and brilliant vlog as usual, will visit soon myself!
Thanks. It;s well worth a visit if you can.
Thanks Thomas, great Video and inspiration!
Lol! When you said you were struggling to find a composition I thought to myself he's going to find a lone tree somewhere 😄
Nice to follow you on your adventures, Thomas, thanks for sharing.
Another great video, seemed like a great trip.
I'm most surprised you found the compositions in the trees, not the sandstone, which is what draws my eye. I expect that your contrasting the curves and color of the trees against the neutral linear background is what makes them so effective.
Very nice work, as usual.
As always, very enjoyable.
Amazing. Simple, well-explained and incredibly helpful! I look forward to the next one, cheers! :)
That's great to hear, thanks a lot.
Awesome you put in a teaser for next episode!
Always love your content, but found this one oddly inspirational. I say this because at 6:06 when you are walking away from your composition, we see the tree up against that rocks and that is something I would have likely walked right by. This is a prime example of the importance of paying attention to every detail around you.
Thanks a lot. I know what you mean, I did walk past it when I was down on the canyon floor, but up high it really caught my eye.
I would love to see you do some more astro man! I'm sure you could get some awesome shots!
I have falling in love with your videos. Although i do not own a DSLR yet. I plan on getting one soon. I never thought i would get into photography.
Cheers!
Ah, it will change your life. Enjoy.
Too short video! I could watch your videos all the time! Great work and such an inspiration for me. Thank You :)
I miss your solo camping photo-hikes.
Me too...
Both you and Ben are an inspiration. In fact, I'll be in Zion two weeks time.
I'm so envious. I want to go back!
