The Story of Cain and Abel
After Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden, they began their new life outside of paradise. Eve gave birth to her firstborn son, Cain, and later to his brother, Abel. Cain grew up to become a farmer, working the soil, while Abel became a shepherd, tending flocks.
One day, the brothers brought offerings to the Lord. Cain offered fruits and crops from the land, while Abel brought the best portions of his firstborn sheep. God looked favorably upon Abel's offering because it was given with a sincere and faithful heart. However, He did not accept Cain's offering, as it was offered without true devotion. This angered Cain, and his jealousy of Abel began to grow.
God saw Cain's anger and warned him, saying, "Why are you angry? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."
Despite the warning, Cain allowed his jealousy to fester. He invited Abel out into the field, and there, overcome by rage, Cain attacked and killed his brother-the first murder in history.
When God asked Cain where Abel was, Cain responded, "I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?" But God, knowing what had happened, declared, "Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground." As punishment, God cursed Cain, making him a restless wanderer on the earth. Even the ground would no longer yield crops for him.
Cain cried out to God, fearing that others would kill him in retaliation. In His mercy, God placed a mark on Cain to protect him, ensuring that no one would harm him, though he would live as an outcast.
Cain's tragic story is a reminder of the dangers of jealousy and anger, as well as the importance of worshiping God with a sincere heart. It also shows both God's justice and His mercy, even in the face of sin.
