JJ, they didn't use cast iron to boil the water. You could still see the small ring where it heated up the center only. william tepe, the control is any basic induction cooking top, like the one right next to them. Normail induction cooking tops can at leat boil water.
Serious question Kobi. What is the temperature of boiling water??? (212 f.) Do you think water ( at sea level) at a slow boil vs a fast boil, one is hotter than the other?
Awesome video. No smack talk, you were fair and objective, and you gave the device every opportunity to impress you, it just never did. I'd love to see how other induction plates handle the same tasks.
First time viewer and ngl i initially avoided this channel because i thought it was another one of buzzfeed's. I got tipped off by the calmer hosts, less frantic editing, and the fact that you used shots other than that top down view :)) Great review
No one will ever and has never needed anything from BuzzFeed. “Tasty” is a food show where 90% of the ingredients in a dish is melted cheese and/or French fries. Enough said.
Bought an induction cooktop for ~$35 and uses 2000W (One Top is only 1500W) and it evenly distributes the heat, and pretty much works really well. It also cools down the ceramic top after cooking, can boil that same amount of water in less than 5 mins.
This cooker is actually an amazing idea, what with the integrated recipes and thermometer. It’s just not fully realized. Maybe the next version will work better
I pre-ordered it. It came almost 2 months late. I’ve had it 4 weeks and I’ve used it once. The controls are wonky, the app is fine, but if your fingers are wet or greasy it’s a pain. The sous Vide claim is ridiculous. It’s NOT Sous Vide because it doesn’t circulate. So it’s just a pot of evenly heated water. The “recipes” are lame and don’t seem tested. And the videos are a rip off of the Chef Steps Visuall Doneness guides. Just a hot, trendy, mess(barely hot).
LinusMLGTips but the people using them for their purpose are homecooks. Tasty chefs are chefs (duh) they had training. Please don't say something that makes you sound like an idiot
Sous Vide doesn't require circulation. That said, you can get a Sous Vide Immersion Circulator (heating wand plus water circulator) for half the price of this.
Lmao. Sous vide does not need circulation. In fact, most high end and commercial sous vide cookers are effectively water ovens. Sous vide is actually one of the few things that the one top does well.
The tasty app is one of the best apps and it has improved my cooking life. The one top is apparently not very useful though. I'm glad this video clarified that to me.
I just got one of these for $31 on Amazon. Just used an old, spare Android phone for the app. Also, had no problem getting a rolling boil with a tri-ply stainless steel pot.
I'm really happy that I clicked on this video. My wife and I had been planning on buying one of these cooktops to supplement (replace) the electric range in our apartment and now I'm thinking I should do some more shopping around.
Finally! I was researching which induction burner is better/reliable for roasting and frying, and went through tons of videos. Your video, guys, is the first one with actually cooking meat,- that's what I was seeking for!Thank you dearly! Not impressed with the burner, poor performance. All the best! Thanks again!
Because of the nature of induction it requires special pans but they say cast iron works. Here is an answer from the FAQ from Cuisinart: The One Top works with all induction compatible pots and pans. Don’t know if your pans are induction compatible? Put a magnet (a refrigerator magnet will do) on the bottom of the pan and shake your pan. If it sticks, you’re good to go. If it slides off easily, your pan may not work. Wondering if cast iron works? Hell yeah it does.
(1) How did the stainless steel pans do with the flour scorch test? I remember that the Breville Control Freak also showed a ring with a cast iron pan. (2) What time did you actually see the water boil with the One Top? (3) Did the Control Freak also end up with a middling boil after 19 minutes and did it also end up with a ring pattern in its boil?
wanderingazn Having re-watched the Control Freak video: (1) While it might have been more fair to do the scorch test on stainless steel pans with the Tasty One-top, the point of using cast iron is that it points out the hot spots of an induction cooker. Also, the scorch from the Control Freak had a visibly less prominent ring. (2) They stopped the boil test because the Tasty One-top clearly didn't have the power to reach a rolling boil. (3) The Control Freak reached a boil in just under 11 minutes, and from what i could see, it was boiling pretty evenly.
Vincent Archer Thanks for the analysis! The nitpicky scientist side of me kicked in when I watched this video and the Control Freak video. I like my carefully documented and executed experiments/assays.
Malcom Chiam most cooking thermos/probes are made from silicone or another coating that is incredibly heat resistant. They also make them for ovens, grills, etc and are designed not to melt.
I think the water would boil faster if you put a lid on the pot but maybe that's only relevant for regular stoves or whatever, you can also boil water in a teapot and add to the pot...
Okay, from seeing just the commercial from it and their first switching it on, my impression is... just what my life and phone needed a handy gadget with yet another companion app for me to download and add to my folders of other companion apps to proprietary hardware.
doesnt the one top come with its own induction-surfaced pots? those probably contain the technology necessary to get a full, even heating instead of that lil tenderloin ring. Some pots are incompatible with induction heating because the material they are made of doesn't conduct well. i think it deserves another chance with it's own pots.
Thanks for doing an honest review! I was gonna purchase this last year when it was for preorder. Now that's I've seen that it's not the best induction, no way! Not a buy for me! I'll just buy some cheap stove.
Good review! You guys did this one correctly! Nice job. You can't argue with the Lodge cast iron pans either... they're everywhere. Tasty had a decent idea and cheaped out on the execution. Get an Instant Pot and a Sous Vide machine and you're good in the kitchen (assuming you have a stove and an oven).
The center burn ring is normal for all induction cooktops in that range... you guys should know this ;) A 12" top will have about a 6" hot spot. This is why the cookware you choose in important as a good pan will spread the heat more quickly and evenly (such as All-Clad) vs Cast Iron which will, as that pan did, not spread heat evenly.
I have a different brand, I have three of them, They give me a temp display. It boils water a lot faster. At first it has the same heat in the middle problem but after while it makes it to the outside edges
So, I feel like that flour burn test was unfair. The video they link at the end tests a $1800 cooktop that has the EXACT same ring pattern. It's very common to induction+castiron. I'm still disappointed by it's power output but come on make a fair comparison.
I have to say, I recieved the One Top as a christmas gift and was scepticle. It is awesome but you have to use the Tasty cook ware wich I got too. I quite like the cookware too. I tried the flour burning test and it was way better with their pan. Also, the sous vide function works pretty well. I don't always use it, but I don't use my slow cooker since I got it and really got into sous-vide. I would say, good not perfect product but you have to use their cookware.
I was watching a BuzzFeed video where they were using a Tasty whisk and it wasn't working. One of their chef producers told them they needed a better whisk, so apparently even the people at BuzzFeed don't like to use their products 😂😂
Really well done review!!! You convinced me not to get this model…is the new version better? Others to compare? I loved the app but not the power / uneven heating surface
I like how they demoed a thin layer of flour as a poor man's thermal imager. Cool technique in a pinch. I'd still like to a FLIR camera image this device.
I rolled my eyes as soon as I saw the directions say LITERALLY coat all sides of your filet with salt and pepper. You could definitely tell it was going for that trendy crowd and that it's a product of a silicon valley startup lol
I got really excited to see how the app would have cooked the stake so I was really disappointed when they started freestyling it... why did they even bother to do it in the first place...
As a daily user of induction cooktops, I can second that induction suffers from this drawback of uneven heating. Induction is only good for particular types of cooking. It is not a one size fits all solution.
Should have added the butter when it said so, after all you want to test the device as is, including the software, adding your own knowledge might make it seem better than it actually is.
Hope you can try some stuff serious eats recommends. The anova immersion heater is cool. Though it's weird the pizza oven with the pizza steel uses a stone.
It works with iPhone ONLY! NOT IOS IPHONE ONLY. Without an iPhone its just an induction top. Even though in the instructions its says if you have trouble connecting an iphone connect another device such as an ipad. Through several emails i basically got the answer that there is no time line for android or even ipad compatibility. basically i bought a way over priced induction top.
I think everyone can agree that the tasty app is amazing with all those recipes. Very easy to use and easy to search for recipes. The stovetop though is BS and there are way better equipment for cooking for cheaper.
You might had been fooled by this video. This is a premature review that has nothing to do with testing features that makes this cooktop different from the others. However if you need a cooktop, that you are going to use for boiling water only, than do not buy this, buy a dumb induction cooker with high power (2.2 KW) instead. Use a suitable pan that heats up quickly on induction, thin bottom with sandwitched iron plate. This is valid for any induction if you want quick heat up. This guys did the same thing with the Control Freak Induction Cooktop (ruclips.net/video/BcSqJ7sZiAQ/видео.html) as well, showing rather his incompetence than the device's.
Finally you guys killed an appliance before it took off 😂👍🏻❤️ #SAVAGE
And it's great, so people don't spend too much money on things that doesn't work.

The guys are doing great job!
I like how it was fair. I don't feel there was any bias and well reviewed. Thanks for the good content!
I agree. When he introduced the sous chef i thought they were going to try to sell it to me but it was a really good review.
There was no control, it might have been better than a standard induction for all we know
I actually feel like it was biased against
I agreed, but then I saw their test using a 2000$ induction cooktop, it performed badly when they used cast iron (which they are doing here)
JJ, they didn't use cast iron to boil the water. You could still see the small ring where it heated up the center only.
william tepe, the control is any basic induction cooking top, like the one right next to them. Normail induction cooking tops can at leat boil water.
It can't boil water? Haha was this on Kickstarter?
Why would it need kickstarter? Tasty / Buzzfeed have MILLIONS of blind followers who will buy this up instantly.

“Tasty” is a food show where 90% of the ingredients in a dish is melted cheese and/or French fries. Enough said.
Tasty is a food show for people who do not cook, nor appreciate good food.
No truer words have ever been said! People try recipes from Tasty just for that "cool" factor but it's not something to add to everyday life.
Lmao I'm crying

Lmao. Sous vide does not need circulation. In fact, most high end and commercial sous vide cookers are effectively water ovens. Sous vide is actually one of the few things that the one top does well.
How the hell can people have the courage to sell an induction hob that barely boils water?!
rabid fan bases man, they can probably drop a couple of deuces, wrap it in foil, and sell it to their followers as artisinal kisses.
In one of your last videos you said cast iron is good for retaining heat but not good for even heat distribution.
Something from buzzfeed being trash? Who would have guessed.
The tasty app is one of the best apps and it has improved my cooking life. The one top is apparently not very useful though. I'm glad this video clarified that to me.
*The app was the reason I could live off 20 dollar a month food budgets, the recipes are cheap and most can be done in a convectional oven*
this would've been even better if you side-by-side compared the induction and normal hob with the filet recipe.
lmao the ad "you can start ______ without any other equipment"

You should review the Joule by chefsteps.
Other than the price there’s nothing to complain about it imo the app is great too

Just any old stand-alone induction cooktop would be fine for that. This is just over priced crap because it's associated with Buzzfeed.

induction cooktop heat large pans like cast iron evenly enough but you just have to give it time to slowly reach the temperature.
I have a different brand, I have three of them, They give me a temp display. It boils water a lot faster. At first it has the same heat in the middle problem but after while it makes it to the outside edges

I like how the buttons are centimeters away from the heating source.
what induction cooktop would you recommend ;)
You can’t use a cast iron skillet for burn patterns. A skillet is the most inconsistent when it comes to heat!
Got me scared on that wire touching the hot skillet. Waiting for something to go wrong. lol
Thanks for this. I had considered getting one, but noped right on out after watching this.
