The front player should be slightly mid court and diagonal to the rear player. That way the front player can cover the cross to the rear and front. All about positioning of the front player makes a huge difference to what the rear player does.

Front court player moves near centre so defensive player can't simply drive the return cross court if rear court dropped he would have moved in.
I think he's smashing from far aside so he took a step back incase if he hits other side back.
