  • #ilovervlife #rvsafetoiletpaper #rvblacktank Is RV safe toilet paper important? Really Jerry? You created a RV Tips and Help video on toilet paper? Yes I did. And it's a very important topic. May be not one that everyone sits around the campfire and discusses, but never the less, a product that is used everyday in RV life.
    In the video we test 5 types of toilet paper, 3 household and 2 RV/Marine grade. I think you'll find the results interesting.
    Products discussed in this video:
    45° Clearview Adapter with 3" Bay Lug - amzn.to/2JuFiUO
    Scott Rapid-Dissolving RV Toilet Paper - amzn.to/2AJHSGh
    Happy Campers Black Tank Treatment - 40 treatments - amzn.to/2YEhHfL
    Happy Campers Black Tank Treatment - 64 treatments - amzn.to/2YZEY7c

    I spent 30 years working in a pulp & paper mill. I personally watched our converting plant shut down winder complexes and switch the wrapper section from a major brand over to "RV toilet paper" wrap to finish a run. When a competitor had a break down and couldn't meet their contractual production denand we used our TP and put their label on the package for them!
    The softness and thickness can be controlled, in part, by using a crepe blade, the paper comes off the dryer, usually a yankee dryer (a giant steam heated drum with gas or steam heated hoods), hit's a sharp blade running on the dryer drum and is pulled off the dryer drum at a slightly slower speed, causing the paper to pile up or crepe. Without the crepe blade it creates a flat sheet that is much harder and rough to the touch.
    The paper is tested in a lab with a tensile tester. They clamp the sheet in the testing machine, wet a strip across the web of the paper and then slowly pull the sheet apart until it tears to measure the strength of the sheet. The strength is controlled by the fiber mix going into the paper machine and by chemical additions.
    I think you will see strength variations across even the same brands.
    In the black tank, water is your friend. Use more of it. I never start my tank with less than 5 gallon in it and flush well. And, use a good black water tank treatment chemical.
    By the way, I use the paper I got from work. They handed it out each month as safety awards, I have cases and cases of TP!

    I use Scott's Rapid dissolving. Might have been worth doing that test again and leaving each one to sit in the water for say 12 hours and look at results and then again at maybe 24 hours.

    Enjoyed your test. My wife and I have been full timing for 18 months. I performed a similar test with an rv paper as well as a couple of more including angel soft that we had used for years. Result was that angel soft performed better than others tested so I stayed with it and have had no issues. But I must mention that I clean the tank meticulously every time I dump. I don't use the equipped factory wash because it doesn't do as through a job as the old fashioned wand. This also keeps sensors clean and operating correctly.

      Oh Coral. Don't feel bad. There are those who use household TP all the time. But it's that one time when for some reason it just didn't breakdown in time and you have a clog. It only needs to happen once and you'll look for a solution ASAP. I'm so glad you found the video helpful. We loved our trip to Texas a little over a year ago with stops in Livingston, Houston, San Marcos, San Antonio, Austin and Waco. What a blast. Will be zipping though in January on our way to NM, AZ and NV. Safe travels. Jerry....

    I've done this sort of test a few years ago. I was testing ANGEL SOFT TOILET PAPER. IT broke down real fast . It's cheaper than the RV tissue paper. Try it for yourselves it works. Thank you for putting on the test . This is really important stuff for new RV'ers to know. You don't want to learn this after you've replaced your black tank.

    Why couldn’t you use Reddix with the using septic tanks in your BLACKPINK

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  2 года назад +1

      Good question Chuck. This is always a debate. We found Redix works too slow. As stated, it’s for septic tanks and the solid breakdown does not have to be as fast as a black tank that’s dumped every 7 to 14 days depending on size. Plus, that quick breakdown also is key to not having an increase in odor. Using an enzyme product designed for the RV market will start liquifying solids in hours.

    Interesting test. While at a Big Lots a while back I grabed a 12-pack of their house brand, which is Jubilee, 12 rolls for $7 and noticed that in my home toilet it broke down almost immediately. So after watching this video I took one sheet in a half a glass of water shook it twice and saw just as much breakdown as your best-performing TP. It's not the softest paper. But it is definitely better than the camco paper!

    I have a Septic System, at Home, and have owned 7 RV's over the course of decades, since 1977. I even lived Full Time, for 4 years+, as a Marine, as I hated Apartment, and Barracks Lifestyles, and could live Steps from the Ocean, for years, inexpensively, and can be ready to Deploy Rapidly , by Hooking up, the 40' Fifth Wheel, and shoving off for storage. I also sold High Line Motorcoach's (Foretravel) after I retired from the Corps, and now own a 40' Diesel Pusher, Foretravel, as well! To me, it is Technique, more than any Product Choice! At home, when I get pumped out, I always get a clean bill of health, from the Pumper, as he says I have "Good Bugs" in my system...literally bugs that fly in from my Ventline that break down TP and Solids! At home, I think if you have too small of a capacity tank, no bugs, have a Dozen People living there, then YES, I agree one Must use that stuff, otherwise, it's a Waste of money! For the RV, which again, I lived Full Time, and as of Today, as I am Retired, I have been a Snowbird for 7 Months. This what works for me, and I Never had a Stoppage! I open the Black Tank when it is as full as Possible, let it drain completely. I then leave that valve open and then open the Gray Water Valve! I let it drain for two minutes, then shut the Gray Valve and effectively "Backflush", the Black Water Tank! I repeat this with a lesser time, of having the Gray Water Valve open to Backflush. I have monitored the "Color" of what is coming out with one of those Clear Screw-In portion, at the Dump! Usually, in only the second flush Very Clear Water is being discharged, and I know that my Black Water tank, has No Residue, whatsoever! I then clear my Gray Water tank to clean the Hose, the rest of the way! I have had a clog or three, over the decades in the hose, but lifting it and dropping it from 2 feet clears it! I see Solid Matter in the clear line, that cause it, and not TP! So, no getting around that! The people who don't Backflush, can and will get the Buildup, as what remains in the tank, when you store your RV, the Liquid Contents just dry up! Remember there is that Ventline, again! Anyone storing an Unflushed RV, is just waiting for an issue! Now, all this being said, possibly Luck was on my side, but I have YET, in all the decades, and tens of thousands of dumps, ever even used a Wand, or have a Cleaning System, in my Tanks, EVER! Again, the Most Important thing is to do a Proper Backflush, and all will be well! I deserve Charmin, for this Tush, of mine, or any other TP out there, and have yet to ever buy the "Special" TP. That's just me, I suppose, but if you are in front of me in a Line at the Dump Station, taking 30-60+ Minutes to clean your Black Tank, thinking you are doing "Maintenance", just know, I will balk at you for taking up my time, and not allowing me to get back on the road! I don't pay to park at a Dump Station, I am there to relax in my RV Spot, OK? ;)

    • @tomroot6013
      @tomroot6013 5 лет назад

      Also, to add, Never Ever, keep your Valve Open, when at a Full Hookup Spot, as again, you are getting rid of the Liquid, when your Black Tank needs to have that to properly Flush! Don't dump, until you have a tank almost half full, or nearly full, and it helps! Again, doing that Backflush method, for good measure! If you have just a Quarter Full Black tank, consider leaving it there to get agitated by just going down the road. Of course, again, you MUST Flush your Black Water even if you use it just One Time, before you store! This works when you are Stopping at places for a day or two! I did live for two years, connected, but put in a Solid PVC Pipe to discharge! IMHO, MOST, Stoppages occur, because of the Construction of our expandable hoses, which create little "Dams" in the mix of things!

      And all that I said there, was not trying to knock your Informative and Lengthy Presentation, but just to point out what I have been doing with Great Results, Sir! When I was a salesman, I'd point out my procedure, and even printed out Full Instructions for my customers, who were either Novice, or Well Seasoned, RV'rs. It is a Suggestion only, as this subject Always gets a lot of play! If you have Internal Level Sensors, we all know how Important it is to keep them free of gunk, and I buy those Pods they have for Dishwashers, and throw a pan or three of Vey Hot Water, down the "Throne" hole, run down the road to agitate, every once in a Blue Moon, Both probably killing good enzymes, but those who use enzyme products, are not actually degreasing, their tank, and ergo.....making matters worse, I'd say? Those who use Ice Cubes are actually Solidifying the Solids, if you think about it! Am I an Expert? Well, heck, let's just say I do the Majority of the repairs on my RV's, and have not removed any tank, for anything, so far! Knock on wood! I Love MY RV Lifestyle, as you do as well! Hope to see ya out and about, some day! And thanks for the Vids, we need folks like you that are willing to Impart Knowledge! But as they say, there are different ways to achieve a goal in life! Happy RV'ing to all!

    I did this test a while back using our home favorite Charmin Ultra and also a marine grade paper. I found them to be similar enough to go with the Charmin. I don't have Scotts and never bought it. We did have Angel soft and Costco's house brand during the pandemic and hated both in home. But no samples to try. I took a few sheets if you could call it that from a Walmart public toilet and also a neighbor who uses a different brand and both those did not dissolve well. We have a septic tank and need to keep it healthy and years of growing up in the 50's and 60's when septic tanks were not nearly as healthy back then and it was driven home to never use anything but TP in the toilet no kleenex tissues even. So to this day we don't. It might be good to mention never use any disposable or flushable wipes in your RV toilet. NEVER. I made the mistake one year of using some baby wipes just water kind no oils and they were ultra difficult to get out of my chemical toilet I used tent camping a high end name brand expensive toilet. I never had trouble prior or since. I learned my lesson and saw first hand how easily this can cause a big problem. When it doesn't break down. It clinged to the sides of the tank too and wasn't until I got home to flush with a hose that I was able to dislodge the one still clinging despite the other two had finally come out during the dumping flush. So I think it might be a great idea to take the time to do this kind of test. I plan on buying the Scotts Rapid paper already identified that it's reliable at breaking down. Yes I know the person who has the formula for using a home made healthy tank solution says you can use any paper as long as you add enough water and maybe flush 2 to three extra times and use his formula but I like to be extra cautious being a new RV and in my 101 learning curve still. I am happy to say I found the product for cleaning sewer tanks and recommended to clean older RV and used RV tanks that may never have been cleaned really cleaned ever since new. So will use that and happy you reviewed it. I've heard numerous reviews to stay away from Happy Camper and similar digestives and treatments that treat scent as will. So got the message. Thanks for these Reviews and demos they are helping a lot of people I'm sure of it.

    My husband and I just bought a 2008 Trail Light, Cruise Light 26 foot RV that we will be living in for about a year, hopefully less, while we have our tiny house built. Neither of us have ever used an RV before so are new to everything. One question we have, and I apologize for the subject, but how does the Scott’s Rapid TP do in regards to fingers going through easily, again…sorry, but with my hubby it needs to be asked. And, how often does the black water tank need to be cleaned out? We appreciate any helpful information. Thank you all.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  2 года назад

      Good questions. It’s single ply, but holds up well. Cleaning the black tank with the swivel stick depends on how often you used the RV. Easiest indicator is the tank sensors. If you empty the black tank and the sensor light(s) don’t clear, the tank has a residue build up on the sides and possibly the bottom. 5 to 10 minute scrub with the swivel stick and some reasonable water pressure will remove.

    We always use the camp ground bathrooms for number 2 and keep the grocery baggies for number 1.. Just tauss the baggies in your garbage. Same with number two toilet paper if it is raining. Never have had a problem with toilet paper clinging to tank sensors thus giving false indicators. Never have an order issue.

    There are several channels on RUclips on this subject, nobody does the test with the black tank additives that most of us use. Someone should soak the different types of tp in containers with the additives for an hour or so. I think that would make a big difference.

    Funny how different testers have different results. Last channel I watched, the Scott’s rapid dissolve wasn’t all that great. Great Value from Walmart was the best and cheaper. I’ve used Scott’s comfort plus for almost two years as a full timer now and without issues. I might consider Great Value since it is a little cheaper.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  5 лет назад +1

      The general practice is to dump black first, then gray to wash out any residue. After you close the dump valves and cap the outlet, take your rinse hose (never use the white drinking hose) and hold up the end of the dump hose while connected to the sewer. Give it a good couple of minutes rinse. That should get any residual out of the hose. Then store in a bay. Good tip is to get a large plastic storage container You know, those you find at Walmart. Coil the hose in it and seal. No water leaking into the bay when stored.

      Thanks much. No need to worry about the #1s or #2s going into the black tank as long as a good disolving RV toilet paper and a daily use of black tank enzyme is used. With a normal flush every use, everything in the tank will liquify. I've tried the ice thing. I've had better results emptying the black tank, then adding 5 gallons of water and a cup of Dawn liquid detergent. Then drive to the next campground. It does a good job cleaning and "degreasing" the walls and bottom of the tank. Jerry...

    I would not have let running water hit the dry paper. You have introduced an uncontrolled variable. In one instance the paper may move to the side and in another ball-up. I have done these tests but I dropped the square in a still container of water, let it sit for one minute and shaken for a number of seconds. The force of my shaking and length of time it is shaken could introduce some error, but not as much as running water would do. The Camco paper tested horribly compared to Angel Soft. The Scott paper is good but not any better in my testing than Angel Soft. I think you came to the right conclusion with regard to the Scott, but I wouldn't use the Camco paper even in a pinch. I don't know why it performed better for you. It is possible they have changed the paper. When using store brands I would recommend testing every few months because the formulation can change. Costco (Kirkland) paper used to be excellent for RVs, but now is unacceptable in my opinion. Good to know about the dollar store brand, thanks.
    The biggest risk for a dam up at the gate valve is a beginner mistake I have the displeasure of making and that is thinking you can just leave the gate open. You need to fill your black tank to at least 3/4s before you pull the gate open. You need a strong force of water and waste to rush out the valve. Otherwise you will be doing the most unpleasant job most of us have ever performed.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  5 лет назад

      So true on leaving the gate open. Just trouble in the making. Not if, but when. Even if the Camco performed best, we wouldn’t use simply on a comfort basis. Must admit, the Dollar Store paper surprised us. I originally took a 5 gallon bucket of water and a wad of each paper and placed in the bucket. Due to time and process was a difficult test to document. This shown in the video was simple, and not scientific as stated, but gave similar results, just on a smaller scale. Appreciate you comments.

    Thanks for taking the time to experiment for us. We did the experiment with the TP we use . It is the Kirkland brand from Costco. It did not break down right away, but after about 30 minutes it broke down fine. We think the key is making sure your tank has enough water. We also pour our dish water into our black tank to help with that.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  3 года назад

      You can. Hot water isn't the solution though. That can hamper, even kill the enzyme. Definitely add 2 and if you think there's a heavy build up, 4 or 5 scoops. Do this with an empty tank to give it time to work. Add scoops and couple gallons of tap water then let it do its thing. You can continue to use the toilet as you normally would. If you have a clear elbow, you'll see black chunks that come from the bottom and sides on the next dump. May take a couple times to clear up the tank.

  • @robinnc5406
    @robinnc5406 5 лет назад

    Nice demo. Maybe not as scientific as it could be, but still very interesting and helpful. I'll try your "two shakes" test with our "tolet paper", and then let it sit for 24 hours and see what happens. Query: What effect would human waste have on the breakdown of all of these papers? Maybe not something to share on line though!

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  5 лет назад

      Thanks Robin. Agree and stated it was a simple demo. I doubt waste has much impact since this isn’t a septic system and after a week or so, there isn’t enough time for bacteria to do its job. I do accelerate the process with one of the enzyme additives. I’ve tried the longer term test. Without being to graphic, take a handful as one would typically use and wad it up before placing in the water. Then at then end of your 24 hours, slightly move the bucket around as if the water was evacuating the tank. Think you find similar results as shown with my mini test. Appreciate you sharing. More in the winter than summer, because we’re out and about more in the warmer months. Here’s the non-video results. We have a 33 degree clear elbow connected between the dump valve and the sewer hose. When we dump, all solids and toilet paper have completely dissolved. It’s a very free flowing thin solution. The natural process of the enzyme and quick dissolving paper just goes away. I have an idea how I can show a test. I’ll try to create something in the near future. Jerry...

We have been living in asia for almost 4 years and the plumbing is not as good as we have in the US so everyone puts used toilet paper in a waste basket next to the throne. Yeah I know it is gross but now we are used to it. There are certain ways to make it not so bad. Having a covered can and also putting it dirty side down. Now I surely have completely grossed everyone out. Anyway I am thinking that we may do that in the RV as well to avoid the trouble of special paper. Anyone else do this as well?

The first was a terrible toilet paper and the second was by leaving the black tank gate open all the time. We now have about 50,000 miles under our belt and a number of months on the road and haven't had a single problem since. Just make sure your tank is nearly full before you pull the gate valve and you will not have to share the limited amount of space in your RV with a million flies.

      The issue is time. A septic system has months to break down solids. An RV, days. The best situation is to put things in the black tank that will dissolve quickly reducing the chance of blocking the drain. RV safe chemicals help, but only so far. Plus something caustic can't be used to speed up the process due to the risk of damaging the tank or seals.

    So, if the rv is stationary and hooked up to the house's septic/sewer...any type of toilet paper can be used?

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  5 лет назад +1

      Hi MxCle. What a great question. There's several schools of thought on this. For Joan and I, we don't differentiate how we treat the black tank whether we are in a location for a week or for longer periods of time. There are some that will leave the black tank open, use any kind of toilet paper and allow to drain. We don't prescribe to that where there's the possibility a build up can occur over time at the tank drain and cause a blockage. Some call this a "poo dam". We were in Florida in one location for a couple of months. During that period, we still used Happy Camper, RV safe toilet paper and drained the black tank every 7 days or so. That way, I had know the solids would dissolve and I'd have pressure from the black tank to push everything out. We've been doing this for over 4 years now and never had a problem. Sure, the RV safe paper and Happy Camper cost a little more, but we have that little extra insurance that we won't risk a black tank blockage. Jerry...

    • @kramerphotos

      No. Same problems. Even worse if you are just planning to leave the gate valve open. I do know someone that is living in a RV in a stationary location. He removed the black tank and hooked up directly to just below the toilet. He isn't ever planning to move the RV. I wouldn't even do what he did because the amount of water in a RV toilet flush is quite small compared to a residential toilet. RVs are just not made for permanent living, but if you do it, use it like an RV.

    The key is using the black tank properly not so much the type of paper lol. Use a reasonable amount of water and dump after a reasonable amount of time. A second fill, a drive and another dump and you will have no problems no matter the paper brand. Stuff it full of paper and number 2 without enough water is what causes the problem so don't do that.

    Not a fair test. You shook the scotts rv while filling the jar. You didn't do that with the others.

      I actually gave some of the other brands the benefit of the doubt and gave them a couple extra shakes. It may not be a perfect test, but gave a general performance of each. The truest test would be to use each for a month or so and see if any issues occur. What I was trying to show was how something designed specifically for the black tank rapidly dissolves. This was the results of this basic test.

    I had the dam problem last year, it was terrible I had to go to a local state park that allows you to dump for a fee and they allowed me to set up at a site being it was Sunday afternoon they had open spots, and I had to fill the tank at least 6-8 times using the attachment for a hose that you fish down into the tank the swirls around before I didn't see any paper running past the clear elbow. I broke down on the way to a camping vacation and I spent 5 days at garage so I forgot to put xtra water in tank and I also forgot the enzymes or the blue stuff, so I messed up bad but I was able to get it clean. I was using the scott regular paper (the one wrapped in paper, like the old time scott paper) not the comfort plus would have like to see that maybe I will try the experiment and see how it breaks up, I'll let you know.

      Sorry to hear that Alicia. Hopefully you don’t face that again. When I had this happen I had to use the device outside that has a dump gate with a water hose attachment. I had to blast from outside in until I could dislodge the yucky mess and get it flowing. Quite a mess. Although I didn’t show in the video, take a wad of paper and drop in a bucket of water. The household stuff takes a while to breakdown. Most of the RV/marine breaks down rather quickly.

      @@iLoveRVlife I tried that blaster thing but the water faucet I was using at the state park wasn't strong enough pressure so it did nothing but I was able to see the issue at the bottom of the toilet it wasn't in the tube, problem solved but definitely going to change paper.

    I ended up with a poop dam from Scott rv toilet paper so wth?

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  Год назад

      A number of conditions can create a poop dam. Don’t leave black tank valve open. Let the tank fill then dump. Not using enough water during a flush. Not only does the organic waste need water to breakdown, the paper needs it too. We’ve been using for 9 years and never had a problem.

    You cheated a little when you used your favorite band. When you were putting the water into the glass you shook the glass from side to side. You did not do that with any of the others. Just my 2 cents :)

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  5 лет назад

      No cheat intended. The little shake was to show how quickly it had separated, not create it. Didn’t matter which brand broke apart the best, just wanted to show which ones did. Also note, I shared the cheap stuff from the Dollar store broke apart easy too. Give it a try, you’ll see how this stuff breaks apart.

    I see when you did the Scott RV and marine toilet paper when you were filling up the cup with water the water was blasting the paper and at the same time, you were swirling the cup? it was 18 min and 55 sec into your video. this is not a good review.. you did not swirl the cup while filling the glass on the campo toilet paper

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  5 лет назад

      It wouldn’t have made a difference. Try it. Some of this stuff won’t break down if you shake it with you hand over the glass. As stated in the video, this was to give a general idea of the quality of paper, not a scientific evaluation of each.

  • @JRMoritz

    It might be the same paper but I bet that the RV paper is treated with a chemical so it breaks down faster!

    • @Lauren-vd4qe
      @Lauren-vd4qe 5 лет назад

      And if that's true then that chemical would get ON your body then IN your body as your skin tissues are porous!

      So many, especially those new to the RV lifestyle, don't realize the difference in a black tank and their home sewage system. That is until the have a bad blockage when they are ready to leave the campground and the stinky challenges that follow. We use RV TP and wanted to show why. This gives a good baseline comparison. Thanks for watching the channel.
