I grew up in southern Iowa on the Mississippi river. We always called bowfin dogfish. I remember catching one as a kid in the mid 70's that was 5 pounds. I was in my dads old boat and was using a Johnson century reel. The bait was this huge grasshopper I hade caught. I was 7 years old. :) Your video made me remember that! thanks!

My son caught a Bowfin in a lagoon off of Lake Erie in Erie PA that was 39 1/2" and weighed over 29 lbs. Unfortunately, Pa doesn't keep records for this native fish species, yet has records for a freaking carp, which is foriegn and invasive!!
I remember catching those bowfins in the mississippi river sleuths. Used to call them dogfish in the 1980s. Love this channel! Lived in the 618 in the 1980s and there is an abundance of great fishing. Several awesome quarries on private land as well.
I just love how enthusiastic he was about the bluegill. Made me wonder why he was so happy then the whole “now we got some fresh bluegill”. Yep. Kind of knew it was coming.
I caught my first bowfin in 2009 and have been obsessed with them ever since. The first one I caught was 10lb . Been hard pressed to chase anything else. Grew up bass fishing but bowfin are a different thing all together. Crankbait or cut bait they come to play. Loved this video.
Hey bud, first vid of yours I’ve seen and subscribed halfway through. That was a crazy good outing and I enjoyed it greatly. Can’t wait to check out some of your other stuff.
2 things... 1 nice frankenbait, and 2 I freakin love when ya do the 1st person perspective. Ya ever get to Indiana lemme know. Would love to fish with ya!
I'm curious. Are you for real THIS nice of a person or are you acting? If you're the same dude in life that you on camera, much, MUCH respect. Keep it up man. Your demeanor is the reason I subscribed, the good content is a bonus.
Was at a spillway near me at the beginning of summer, caught 2 hybred stripped bass over 20" a pike 31" 2 walleye 17"19" a few small channel cats and a small bass. Such a variety of fish. Spillways becoming my favorite place to fish. But the water gets pretty low during summer months
Some nice Bowfin! You want a challenge now that you’ve found a good locating for them is to throw lures for them. They’ll often hit bass style lures. My daughter got one on a stick worm yesterday and fighting them on a medium to medium heavy rod is an absolute blast!
We found a nice little spillway pool with several different species near Kansas City MO. A few weeks ago there were dozens of some silver color fish trying to swim back up the spillway, and some monster catfish (15 to 20 pounders) swimming there at the mouth of the spillway. it was something to see! This spot seems to have dried up with the cold weather.
Nick, you never disappoint, another awesome video. You killed it there & I also think there has to be bigger ones in there so I hope you go back. I love your excitement every time you hook a fish & how bummed you are when one gets away, as I do the same. Great location, nice catches!
The way you have your cameras set up and the edited footage is Really enjoyable! Nicely done amigo. You keep making em, I'll keep watching em! :-) your camera work and angles and editing really make the video work. You feel like you're there. Really nice work man. It MAKES a difference.
Excellent video man! Love the new spot! Lookin forward to the next video where you nail that monster catfish!! Keep up the good work brother, Much love from CO
Another great video! Your baitcaster setup is perfect for a rod holder. Set at 45° it works as a system. The bend in the rod, the stretch of the mono, and the circle hook all work together. The hook turns into the corner of the mouth and you don't have to set the hook. Just lift high and reel. I always fail when I try to set a circle hook, but if I leave it alone, it's a very high hookup rate. Those were white crappie by the way. You can tell from the vertical bars. Keep it up, your videos are fun to watch!
I am in northeast Oklahoma. Bluegill is a common bait for catfishing around here. We usually use the small ones whole and throw the larger ones back or keep them for cooking and eating.
Wow Nick that was an amazing day of fishing. I have caught small bowfin before but that was a huge one. I would definitely hit that spot again. Maybe try some 7/0 or 8/0 circle hooks for those big kittys. 👊👍
Been loving your videos. Wife got me a backpack type long bag that holds rods and reels. Need to find some fishing spots in West Michigan that I can hike to. Keep the content coming.
You and Leo from extremephillyfishing should do a challenge micro lures only biggest fish or most fish, and what you should do is grab a cooler full of those big head carp and freeze them for whenever you need bait
Solid day at that spot, I always appreciate it when someone shows the positive when it comes to bowfin, it's quite an amazing fish. If I had a nickel for Everytime I heard completely false and untrue info about bowfin, like they eat and kill all gamefish to they're invasive etc. The list goes on, even the cruel treatment to these fish by throwing them on the bank to die just ridiculous. So a BIG thumbs up for you good sir 👍
Ive been fishing my whole life and ive never been able to catch a bowfin. Ive only seen people catch them so it was pretty dope to aee u catch a while bunch of them
I’m in Virginia and have never seen a bowfin. If I caught that I would have assumed it was an invasive species, snakehead. We never use carp for bait either. We never see small carp. It’s like they miraculously go from egg to several pounds. The best bait around here is shad followed by bluegills and whatever else you catch. The worst thing is that freezing shad, turns them into mush. We catch them with throw nets and depending on the time of year the shad are bigger than your hand or the size of a couple fingers. It’s very interesting. From spring until September the shad are pretty good sized. Then around September the hatch is on for a month. You can cast your net and pull in a hundred shad that are finger size. We keep some of the biggest and throw the rest back. Needless to say, but it’s a little tough to catch big catfish or stripers during this shad hatch. Good luck and continued success.
For your gar set up you should use a treble hook. It holds your bait on better and gives you a better chance of hooking up with the gar. Love the spillway videos btw
Bowfin are extremely underrated. Super Hard fighters, aggressive, and awesome looking. And even cooler considering theyve been around for over 100 million years!
Just came across your video. Loved it. From the way it looks, your in my hometown. I've fished that spot before and caught alot of bowfin. You definitely need to go back to that spillway! If you go into town, there is a small family owned bait shop that has a bowfin mounted hanging on the wall, caught from the very spot you were fishing. They also have live bait, so you wouldn't have to sacrifice a little bluegill!😂 Keep the videos coming.
Damn dude catches something on every cast- reminds me of the king of the hill episode where hank and the boys use crack for bait 😂 fish on brothers from denver Colorado 🐟🐟🐟

Beautiful *video* this amazing place, beautiful fish Congratulations. Hug and good fishing!👍
I never caught a bowfin in my life till fishing in a small creek last fall in Michigan and it was a 4lb bowfin definitely fun to catch put up a good fight would love to hook a 9 pounder 👍.
Wisconsin state record bowfin is 13lb 1oz and was 31.6in long caught in 1980 on the willow flowage. They sure are fun to catch especially when you catch a bunch of me like you did. Great video, looked like a fun day..
I was surprised when you caught a bluegill with the bowfin in there. I caught a 6.9 pound one this summer in Houghton Lake here in Michigan. The locals up there want them killed if you catch one because they eat the bluegill but I didn’t kill mine. Your videos are great 👍🏽
All you need to catch Gar is a piece of nylon rope about 4" to 6" long, tie your line to one end and unravel the tail like a Malibu jig. No hook required, because the Gar's teeth get hung in the strands and he's caught.
You going down to the weigh in at the Alton Amphitheter tomorrow after noon for the Catfish Classic? They have a 4000 gallon tank setup to show up the big hogs the winners catch...I think it starts around 2:30
Congrats on your new pb bowfin. It was another great, and exciting video! Thanks for sharing it. Question, are bowfin good to eat? I've only seen them on your videos. We don't have those here in the southwest.
With regards to your bottom setup for catfish. I think you'd have more hookups if you'd tighten the drag and let the fish hook themselves when they run. I use spring stakes for my cat fishing rigs and when the poll bends over and the line becomes taut, I'm almost certain to have an already hooked cat on the end... I tried lightening the drag to let them run, but had significantly more spit-outs... Just a suggestion.
Dog fish are so much fun to catch. They fight like hell but will tear up lures. I have caught a Minnesota state record a few times just never turned it in.
Now, you better go back out there. You can't hook into a monster fish, lose it, and no go back - especially after filming it for us to see. lol Good luck!
Hell yeh I subbed...My Galfriend recommended watching this vid. Hey, for those Gar, try unraveling 8" of that cheap nylon rope, the kind that has the fine/silk feeling stuff. Pull it apart really good so there's a lot of "hairs". Toss it out when their feeding on top. When they take it, let them chew on it for a bit. You don't even have to have a hook, it gets tangled in their teeth. Try to get it in quick! There ya go.! As for the Bowfish, they'll eat any lure, particularly smaller white spinner baits with willow leaf blades. Good luck!
My goal is to fish with you and when we are done you say, "See you later buddy." Love the channel.
Exactly.
I'm not crying, you are!!!
