I would think the lens element can be put back at any position radially. (Only the convex/concave sides are important). But you even mark the radial position with the dot. But you know this business more than any body.
Brilliant information, I will prepare a clean room, wash well plus wear hair net etc, now I'm motivated to give this a go on my sigma 70mm to 200mm lens.

Among so many other things, never EVER provide direct pressure from your fingers ! - Instead turn your sterile cleaning material into a little puff pillow. This assures that you're not applying too much pressure DOWN onto the coatings - What if a tiny particle is embedded in the tissue or still laying on top of the lens element? This is always a possibility unless you're in a 'Clean Room'. - Finally, you must always utilize a self standing High Intensity Lamp (brilliant LED also works) to continuously inspect every step of the re-install of elements & groups (he applied Loctite & never once inspected the optical path in this manner !). BTW : I've been a camera tech for over 35 years...
TOM C Thank's Tom, well there could be some fungus spores left somewhere in the lens body, but to get rid of that, I would have to fully disassemble the lens, so I think it's just better at the moment just clean those lens elements that was infected. Also because I don't have a repair manual for this lens.
I used this method on an old Sigma 18-200 DC. After managing to unscrew the ring from the back lens group - I couldn't get the lens out to clean the fungus in the end because they seem to also be held together by 3 microscopic screws...Any tips? Either way this was very helpful to make sure nothing broke in the process, thanks!

Hi there. I cleaned the back element of a Zeiss 135mm f2 with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Do you think I damaged the lens coating? Before was a purple/blue cast now more blue. Definite change. If I recleaned with lighter fluid would any coating be resolved?

Hello, Do you maybe know if it is possible to remove the front element of the earliest Sigma 70-200 F2.8 ? It does have a the ring with 2 slots at the front, but once that ring is removed, the glass will not 'fall' out, it remains sitting very tight in the barrel.

No. Keeping the lens in a humid environment may cause fungus to reappear.

Do you prefer lighter fluid over isopropyl for cleaning regular dirt/oils from the lens elements?
In some cases I prefer lighter fluid, but it all depending what kind of "stuff" is on the lens element.
